zulfi
What are turbochargers in the car? I am not that mechanical person, i really have no idea about turbochargers. Also, how do they work?
anoop
In simple words, turbochargers give better power to the engine. Exhaust gases makes the turbocharger work in a way that it helps in increasing the engine power. Turbochargers pump the air in the combustion chamber that ultimately helps in powering up the engine. Many people think that Combustion is inhaled only by the fuel, but it’s not true. The combustion is injection by the air also which is then mixed with the fuel in the engine. The reason why air is injected in the engine is because it helps in burning the fuel than normal condition. The atmospheric pressure inside the engine goes really high than normal when the air comes in. And off course, more the fuel is burned better is the performance and higher is the power of the engine. But it doesn’t mean that turbochargers are always good for the engine. Off course the main benefit from the turbochargers is that engine can produce more power just by the air itself which is a natural phenomenon. But the biggest disadvantage of turbochargers can be seen in any sports car or high power cars. When you accelerate the car, the car doesn’t catch the speed at once but takes a second or two to catch up the speed. This is because turbochargers delays the time of reaction when one tries to speed up the car. Also, the turbocharging efficiency in the car obviously add some other cost into the vehicle and ends up to be expensive than normal vehicles. Also, the engine of such cars is more complex than the normal cars. So if there any issue with the turbochargers or engine pops up, it really makes a huge difference on the maintenance cost of the same. That’s why people say; go for powerful cars when you know you can afford it. The main hidden cost of maintenance in such cars is because of the turbochargers functioning. zulfi
So, do you think installing extra turbochargers is a good choice or not?
ghassank
The main question is whether they are safe or not? Can they damage the engine or cause some other trouble in the system?
ethan
Well to my thinking, if turbocharger is installed by company itself in some specific model then it's safe and sound for car engine life as those companies set the turbo pressure at a balance to offer reasonable power gain vs reasonable engine life. Fitting aftermarket turbocharges will get so many questions as car key components are not made to withstand the turbocharged power, be it drive train, brakes, cooling system, gear box, engine foundations, axle, differentials etc. As these are the component that will get hit badly with substantial gain in power and start failing one after the other. My friend got turbocharged in Nissan Patrol for having extra doof doof to climb faya dunes straight up and within six months he ended up spending on almost all above components due to extra power surge caused by turbocharger delivery. Mach3
Thanks for sharing this information ethan. I have always suspcted that turbochargers are actually bad for the car. If you need more power simply buy a new car, don't ruin your existing one just to get few hp.
