2010 Ford Explorer review

The Ford Explorer is Ford’s only mid-size SUV and is slotted between the smaller Ford Escape and the full-size Ford Expedition.

When it was first launched over a decade ago the American built Explorer managed to tilt consumer opinion in favour of SUVs as a viable alternative to car. Currently in its fourth generation, the truck based Explorer will move onto a car based platform from the 2011 model year when a new model based on the Explorer America concept will be introduced.

The 2010 Ford Explorer is available in the region in two trims – XLT and Eddie Bauer (named after a US clothing company) – and also comes in a twin-cab pick-up variant called the Sport Trac.

Sold with a solitary 4.0-litre V6 engine, which produces just 210bhp the Explorer does not get you anywhere in a hurry. Considering that this mid-size SUV can seat up to seven the need for a more powerful engine can be felt on many occasions. Both trims come with a five-speed automatic transmission and Ford’s Control Trac four-wheel-drive system as standard. The Explorer can handle the occasional off-road excursion but is not a serious mud plugger.

The 2010 Explorer offers a feature-rich interior but is not as contemporary as some of Ford’s newer offerings. Features include alloy wheels, leather seats, cruise control, with three power points and the SYNC entertainment and communication system for tunes. Automatic headlamps and a flip open rear window are also included.

Options like power-folding third-row seats, power front seats and dual zone climate control, as well as a moonroof, navigation system and a rear seat DVD entertainment system make the Explorer even more comfortable for city commuting and long journeys alike. Dual front airbags, front-seat side airbags, curtain airbags and ABS are standard safety features.
