Gear / Clutch issue with Manual JKU

Evening Friends, In the last 2-3 drives, towards the latter half of the drive, my gear appears to be very stiff and even at full clutch down position i would need a lot of force to move between first-second and reverse. It happened on couple of afternoon drives and also on one morning drives mostly during the third hour. In the last drive with @Kailas it was stuck on neutral and I had to stop and wait for 5 minutes and then to put it on reverse then to first gear. It seems like happening when I have to do lot of shits between first and second gears. During all these occasions the engine temperature dial was showing normal-  just above halfway mark. I had taken it to the garage after the previous drive and they said the clutch fluid was low and they topped up the same. But same issue has happened in the next drive as well. Appreciate if any of you have any observations / suggestions to solve this issue. @Gaurav @Frederic @Srikumar any thoughts as you drive manual cars and might have experienced something similar. TIA Anoop

When was your manual gearbox oil changed?

Was it the right spec? Most imp.

If in doubt, change the gear oil and filter, buy OEM gear oil from Jeep without trusting any einstein mechanic advise.

Also research if your manual gear has a oil cooler. If it is seems adding small fan on cooler will help as you are experiencing this issue after couple of hours of offroading.

Is this struggle in shifting is there on highway or in stop and go traffic?

Few questions :

1. Does the shifting improve if you pump the clutch a few times before shifting?

2. Did your mechanic bleed the system properly to remove all the air bubbles?

3. How many kms have you done on your clutch?

4. With the engine off, are the gear shifts smooth?

5. While driving on the highway on 6th gear at 120 km/h and above, do you have revs increasing suddenly?

6. Do you have hard shifting between all gears or only between 1st and 2nd?

As a first step, check the condition of your gear oil and see if it's dirty, which I doubt else you would be having grinding noise while the gear is engaged. Also, check the level of the gear oil just to be sure.

I would say from what you have described it's most likely an issue in your clutch system and with the clutch not properly disengaging

Start of by bleeding the master and slave cylinder and refilling with new DOT3 brake fluid (or whatever is recommended as per the owners manual). Also check if there are any pin hole leaks through which air can come into the system.

If it's not the master / slave cylinder, it could also be an issue with the pressure plate that it might have become a bit too hard and not helping disengage the clutch disc.

Another test with the engine running, put the car in gear and press the clutch, do you hear a whining noise which disappears when you start releasing the clutch. This could be a sign of a bad release bearing.

Thanks @Srikumar @Gaurav thanks for the guidance, I will have to go though this in details during the Eid break to find out the root cause, starting with the oil. I don't think its a burnt clutch. It has done only 70K KMs, so that should not be a factor. It seems there is no issue affecting the on road behaviour or shifting. It does not also improve if i pump the clutch multiple times either before shifting.

Feels like it is directly related to the temperature inside so which again point to the quality of oil as Gaurav mentioned. I will start with the same and see how it goes. TIA

Sorry but burnt clutch has nothing to do with 70k kms, it's about driving habit.

We have seen people burning clutch on brand new car with 1000 kms on the clock.

If you have been doing half clutch driving or recoveries that could be most likely possible too.

@Gaurav That was checked first couple of weeks back when I had this issue first and was assured that there is no issue- I service it at one of the jeep specialists. Admittedly I was not in the room when they checked and would try to stay there this time 😬

If there problem with clutch, it should remain the same during first half of drive and also on-road. I guess its only oil issue.
