Checking the transmission

Hi guys,

My A8 10 does not sail smoothly anymore and i think that the problem has something to do with the transmission. There is a distinctive difference in how it used to perform before and now. How can I check if the transmission of my car to see if its up to par?

You need to check the transmission fluid and see if there is some that needs to be added. At times if the car is not moving properly and the owner feels that it has something to do with the transmission (gears not lubricated, etc), he or she should check the fluid first. Solves 90 percent of the problem if it is low on fluid.

Automatic. Okay I can get my hands into checking the trans fluid. Can someone help me with the process exactly. Newbee here. been a while since its gone for servicing. They usually take care of it there. I think this time I should do it myself so that I know how to.

Follow this process:

1. Park car on a level surface, just to check the exact level of the fluid inside your car. Car should be running - Neutral should be

fine.

2. Keep a cloth/towel with you.

3. You need to find the auto-trans fluid dipstick located on the passenger side under the hood - usually at the back of the engine. Its labelled transmission.

4. Take the dipstick out and wipe it thoroughly

5. Replace it in the holder and then take it out again, this time don't wipe it and look at it closely. The fluid needs to meet the Warm-Full wording. If it does not then you need to add more fluid to the trans.

6. Turn your car off. Place the dipstick back in the holder. Fill up the trans with fluid till the Warm-Full level and repeat steps above to be certain of the level of the fluid inside the trans.

7. Do not overfill.

8. Replace dipstick and close hood.

Done!

Hi Garry

I'm afraid that Audi have no depth stick ! Sorry

so your car "you mentioned A8 10" so if it's A8 2010 (6or8 cylinder) or S8 V10 both have ZF 6HP26 6 speed transmission which is good news it's good transmission used it Mercedes ,BMW ,Rang Rover & Porsche but in Audi it have the most reliable software and design.

So here some questions that you have to answers:

- when was your last major service (including ATF and filter) if more than 80,000 km driven after so you need to change both (be sure to get original ATF other ATF damages your gearbox)

- These symptoms only in cold / worm condition it's related to your valvebody (mechatronics) and some times it's only a recetangle gaskit on top of the valvebody

- These symptoms only in slow driving with vibration during shifts it's related to torque converter

by any case once you have any job done inside your gearbox change ATF and filter (don't save 500 or 600 and pay it later 7000 or 8000 after 6 months to replace complete transmission)

Good Luck

Hi Garry. I think the first thing you need to do is be a bit more specific about the problem. To say it does sail smoothly anymore could hide a multitude of sins. It may be a transmission problem but it may not be. So, what is it doing now that it wasn't doing before? Let's have some details of the problem. You have said it hasn't been serviced for a while so this could be a start point. Where do you get it serviced? During the service ask for a full diagnostic check using VagCom. This should point to where the problem may lie. If it is the transmission then ideally the transmission fluid should be changed every 60/70,000 KMS. If yours hasn't been then I would recommend doing so. It would be wise to let Audi do this as they will use the correct fluid. An independent garage or transmission specialist may not and you do need the correct fluid or you may regret it. The transmission filter will need replacing at the same time. Audi will tell you the fluid does not need replacing but believe me, it does. Even ZF recommend replacing the fluid periodically. But first be specific about the problems you are encountering. From there we will be in a better position to help.

Cheers

Steve
