2010 Jeep Patriot review

Though the 2010 Patriot might wear the coveted Jeep badge, have the trademark seven-slot Jeep grille plus a pair of round Jeep headlights, it’s not really a Jeep.

No, underneath all the Jeep dressing up is a barely modified Dodge Caliber hatchback. Although the Patriot does have four-wheel drive, it’s really not up to the standard of any serious off-road work. In America you can specify an off-road package, which improves the Patriot’s rough stuff credentials, but sadly it’s not offered in the region.

Therefore, unless you really want a family hatchback that has the looks of a Jeep – but none of the abilities – then we suggest looking elsewhere in the range. However, if all you want is something that looks a bit tough, has a high-set driving position and the abilities to scramble across a patch of waste ground to secure an elusive parking spot, then keep on reading.

The Patriot’s 2.4-litre four-cylinder is eager enough, but is ultimately hampered by the CVT (continuously variable transmission) gearbox which unless you are extremely gentle with your throttle inputs is all too eager to hold onto a ratio all the way to the redline. On the plus sides, the Patriot features a wipe-down interior and a powerful speaker system which flips down from the bootlid that’s perfect for any beach or desert barbecue sessions.

It’s actually a lot smaller than it might first appear with limited space on board for five and one of the smaller boots in the sector.

Since coming under the ownership of Fiat, Jeep has decided that the Patriot won’t be upgraded and will be quietly withdrawn from the market before a new Fiat-based replacement arrives by 2012.
