The 350Z proved a hugely popular two-seat sports car around the world, so Nissan was highly unlikely to radically adjust the formula for its successor.

Unsurprisingly then, the 370Z is more of an evolution of its predecessor, with the major difference being in the larger engine reflected in its new name.

Aside from that, the exterior has had a redesign although despite the new boomerang-shaped headlights, its shape will be immediately recognisable to 350Z fans. The car has also been extensively re-engineered from the 350, thanks to lightweight aluminium parts that aid handling and improve fuel economy. The 370Z is built for performance, not practicality – as such, there are no rear seats and the boot is less than massive.

Power comes from a 3.7-litre V6 engine that makes 328bhp and is attached to a seven-speed automatic gearbox. The gearbox has a feature called Downshift Rev Matching, which gives the engine a ‘blip’ when changing down a gear to keep the shifts and smooth as possible. Paddle shifters behind the steering wheel allow for manual gear changes when wanted.

Available equipment includes a push-button start, sports seats and Bluetooth phone connectivity, as well as a Bose audio system, which includes a six CD changer and an auxiliary input socket for MP3 players. Satellite navigation and leather seats are also available.

Safety features include VDC (electronic stability control) and front, side and curtain airbags as standard.

A convertible version, called the 370Z Roadster, is also available. It features a folding soft-top roof which is stored in the boot space, reducing luggage space to 139 litres instead of 235 litres in the coupe.

A range of official accessories are available for the 370Z from Nissan’s motorsports division, Nismo. These include a bodykit and spoiler, stiffer suspension for improved cornering and a sports exhaust.
