  2. I know a guy who was working on a building site in Ireland. Not the smartest guy. The dumper was low on diesel so the foreman told him to go and fill it. After 30 minutes, he still hadn't come back so the foreman went to look for him. As he went around the corner, he saw the dumper coming down the road with diesel splashing over the sides of the skip. He literally filled the dumper with diesel.

  4. There was a time when I thought that some cars were better or worse than others, and I even had one or two favorite brands. Now when I look at a car, all I see is an overpriced, over rated, badly designed, unreliable, and mostly dangerous piece of crap. Sadly, some are still more or less so than others.

  5. Thank you for organizing such a great event team carnity. It was a pleasure to drive touching the whole UAE as a convoy. I felt the pleasure of long drive as well as the care of team when Gaurav bhai handed over the radio to me. It was fun and helpful at the same time. Regarding the pictures, I have shared whatever I took in the whatsapp group and unfortunately, I don't have it with me now. I had to format my phone due to some technical errors. I hope you can find my pictures in whatsapp group if you have not cleared it yet. I was expecting to meet you @Barry.

  6. Similarly I had a friend (who owned a car accessory shop in Shj) I was visiting him, and while walking towards him I saw him under the hood of his car, struggling with something with a pair of pliers, as I got close, he finally managed to pull out whatever he was fighting with under the hood. Upon closer inspection he had managed to rip out a battery terminal from his maintenance free AC delco battery ! I asked him why the hell did you do that for!!! He said he was having issues with starting his car and someone had told him to inspect and top up water in the battery if it needed. And since these two terminals were the only things he could see, he thought these were the screw tops !!! :-/ I have a few more of these real life auto stupidity stories, which I can relate if people find them interesting

  9. Many car accessories shop and Ace hardware sells a can of spray-on rubber protectant, that you can just spray on car nose, quarter of bonnet and side view mirrors. Once you are done, just peel off that rubbery film by hand. Sorry I don't remember the exact name, but if you describe this to any half way decent car accessory shop, they will know it.

  11. There will definitely be clearance issues. The only thing to do here is to strip it down, clean out all the gunk from the block, crank, cams, check and if possible hone the cylinders, (if not, re-bore), polish or regrind the crank, and fit new bearings, pistons, rings, and a new timing kit and oil pump. Then, pressure test the cylinder head, check, and re-seat all valves, and replace valve stem seals. Oh, and don't forget the tell the idiot not to do this again just after he pays you for all of the above.

  13. It was the most amazing and magical drive that I have been waiting for since long time. I spent about 17 years in Dubai and been to almost every nook and corner in the UAE, but never realized that we can cover all the emirates in one day until Waqas imagination gave us this idea. The idea of covering whole country in one day round road trip was just too exciting. And this excitement continue to grow when one after the other carnity member signed up against all the odds of 45-50 degrees heat and driving through the dry and arid land could be strenuous. The occasion of reaching 15,000 members was just too big that no one care about August heat and jumped into this exciting drive to mark their presence. Sincere thanks to Asif Hussain, Abdul Basit Khan, Baiju Jayapalan, Kavin Shah, Manu M S, Ayesha, Rahimdad, Saleem and Vivian. We started from last Emarat Petrol Station on Jebel Ali side toward Abu Dhbai by 10 AM and finished at Dubai Canal by 12 AM by driving almost 700 kms. It took us 14 hours instead of 10-11 hours as planned, but we learned a lot from this first experience and still manage to cover all the emirates in one day. Starting point: Emarat Petrol Station, SZR, Dubai Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi Al Jimi Mall, Al Ain Fujairah City Center Iceland Waterpark, Ras Al Khaimah Dreamland Aquapark, Umm Al Quwain Ajman City Center, Ajman Sharjah Paintball Park, Sharjah Dubai Canal Parking, Dubai Lesson Learned: Factor extra time for wrong turns, closed road, detour through unpaved slower roads etc. Optimize the picture taking time, and no need to over-perfect every moment. Restrict lunch break and add few quick tea stops enroute. Start early to experience Al Ain - Fujairah - RAK route in daylight. Reverse route can be tried to put interesting roads and scenic beauty in daylight. We can exclude Al Ain as it's part of Abu Dhabi emirates.

  14. Just to add, no offense is being taken on my part, I'm just sharing my personal opinion. Any mechanic should be able to rebuild an engine to dealer spec and where I'm from, that's how it is. It's so simple to measure things like clearances, fastener torque etc and follow the spec sheet or workshop manual procedures, use or don't use the correct sealants in the correct places etc. The reality in UAE is that everyone calls themselves a mechanic but in reality the majority have less wit than a professional apprentice in their first year. They're not mechanics, they just screw things apart without thinking and put them back together covered in silicon and shellac with the most basic understanding of how it should work. These people give us professionals a bad name and drive our salaries down to the floor in competition. They will open an engine with zero diagnostics other than a gut feeling and hope it goes back together without any problems. I find it sad that people will choose a mechanic on price rather than quality of workmanship. In my first job in UAE, I remember the workshop foreman stripping down a VW Golf engine then asking me what was wrong with it after it was stripped and I had no way to do any diagnostic work. Zero knowledge or wit but somehow still made it to foreman. The same foreman shouted at me for cleaning the protective coating off a new brake disc before fitting it. I fitted the rest of the discs without cleaning them and the car came back a few days later with the brake linings cooked. The same guy had a car a leaking ABS pump and covered the leak with epoxy. The car came back a few days later with no brakes. Still, this garage got a lot of work because they were prepared cut corners and do jobs like head gaskets for under 500dhs. No quality of work whatsoever, no measuring of flatness, just send the head for a skim, cover it in shellac and bolt it down with an airgun and hope for the best. This is the sort of thing that is going on in UAE, cable tie and duct tape engineering and customers have no idea other than they are paying a low price for repairs. There is zero theory with these guys, most of them have never even read a book. I have read many books and articles on vehicle repair and I know what I'm doing. All good mechanics are similar. Sometimes I feel sick when I think of all the unpaid time I've spent educating myself on how to be a good mechanic/technician/electrician and end up having to do a job for a quarter of what it's worth just because someone with far less skills than me is being allowed to dictate the market price. I might rant more later when I'm not so busy.
