  1. It was a first time for me today and being an absolute newbee, i wasnt sure if i had made a right choice tagging along with this group. But the day was full of suprises, and loads of fun. Firstly i would like to thank Rahim bhai & Gaurav and not to forget Eduardo and the others( sorry forgot their names) who really made my day. the whole day was perfectly organised. got stuck twice and superman Gaurav was there in a blink to tell me what do do next. and voila!! all solved in a second. the amazing thing was not just the drive alone. it was also the passion we could see in these people in regards to being helpful. i have come across many people organising a lot of events. but these people were with you in every aspect when needed. i would like to thank Asif also for the broadcast and assistance. in Short i dont know if its the people today or if its the drive that was the best. Lets give it a tie. Both the people and the drive today were the best . i am looking forward to be on the next drive very soon. cant wait to deflate my tires again

  2. Have this at work. Will be up for sale soon. Twin turbo V8 rock crawler Jeep with 4 wheel steering. Huge lift. Huge tyres. Huge sound system. All built around a WW2 fighter theme. Here’s a shot of the interior and a sneak peek at the bodywork. How many people can say they own a Jeep with twin mini guns on the bonnet? Will post some more pics after the weekend.

  3. Trip report. Firstly a big thank you to @razeen hasan for taking the time to post his experience. It is feedback and love like this that pushes us to do better every time. Unlike the past 2 Fridays, started of with fog instead of rain. The fog was quite thick in places and we had a slight delay in start. Everybody was in good spirits and after our Newbie brief we were off for the drive. We started on some flat track with a few bends and curves just to give a feel of how the cars behave in the sands. As I normally do in my newbie drives the level was picked up slightly to experiment with the throttle. As expected there were a few refusals and a stuck, but with the experienced Marshals at hand for help all learned quickly on how to apply throttle in different situations. I thoroughly enjoyed myself to see the newbies learn and pick up the tricks and more importantly apply our teachings and put it into practice. As we drove through a fairly easy terrain due to the recent rains which had the sand firmly in place, we reached a very tempting area to play in. Although newbies were not allowed to participate, except for the few who have driven before. We did not have much of slide or sand flying due to the hard surface. But it was enjoyable nevertheless. Time just flew as we had loads of fun. It was time to move and we headed to the shaded area. Many thanks to all for the snacks and breakfast, the breakfast break was just as enjoyable as the drive itself. After the breakfast we just passed the couple of dunes to drive on to the track and out. Once we were on the tarmac we removed our flags, and shifted to 2 wheel drive mode to slowly drive to the Adnoc pump. This is where we inflated and headed for the Friday prayers. Reached home safely after a satisfying day, can't say the same for @Gaurav bhai as he had to head for his afternoon drive. A big thanks to @Gaurav, @eduardo, @Brette and @Fuad for taking responsibilities during the drive and keeping the convoy safe and moving. @Faiz khan also showed good potential and keep your eyes open to another Fewbie in the group soon.

  4. Carnity forum has shown in the past on how some of these so called professional garages are the biggest rip off. They offer all the bling but no honesty in their work. So more than mentioning a professional or a back street garage, it's better to try and find a honest mechanic even if he works in a big workshop or is a one man show. Also, some of the back street garages exist for a reason, the fact that many people in this country can't afford to pay AED 3500 for a timing belt change, which is me included.

  5. I used a system like that a while back to find a pinking cylinder. Had 4 magnetic microphones and a pair of headphones and a switch to change channel. A lot of uses for it, only limited by your imagination. As @Gaurav said, the majority of workshops here are ill equipped. Some don’t even have basic stuff like a multimeter, just a bulb taped to a screwdriver. I’ve been here 3 years and I don’t even think I’ve seen a timing light. I tried to go to a tool store to buy one once and they were like, what’s that, so I had to do my best and set it by ear. Forget about dial gauges and stuff, not going to happen. I got really lucky this time. Started in a new shop that was just taken over. It has a tool room that nobody has ever been in. The previous owner was some rich German guy who ordered one of everything out of the catalog. I spent a couple of hours the other day and my mind was blown by stuff that I was finding. I’ve never even seen some of this stuff in main dealer shops if been in. When was the last time you seen a set of spiral sockets? I’ve hired a good team of guys, the kind of nerds who like to stay up all night on the internet and read stuff, not the kind of guys who learn to change brake pads and decide, ok I’m a mechanic now. So big hopes and dreams of moulding some minds and encouraging thinking outside the box, and it might actually work. There comes a time to say I’m fed up rolling in dung.

  7. Dear All, thanks for letting join! I am based in Abu Dhabi and I am about to buy my first car in the UAE which will be a Mitsubishi Pajero PETROL 3 door 2006. This was the second Pajero I looked at, and Overall I am happy with the car and Price. After a Test a drive, I arranged for it to go to a mechanic for inspection. He told me Overall it is in good condition for its age and should last a while (My aim is to have this car for 15-18 months). There are a few minor repairs which I will get done such as the coolant hose replacement and brake pads. The mechanic also recommended changing to the Timing belt and has detailed as follows: Timing renewal, with parts and labour including water pump and thermostat - 3500 AED I am wondering if 3500 AED is a fair price, as this is considerably more expensive than the cost in the UK for the same service. Can someone recommend another Garage which offers the service at a lower price, or is this a fiar price? Regards Lewis cocks

  8. Well was going to say you are low on refrigerant but I guess you got that sorted out anyway. Seems like you do have a leak but its super tiny since uts around 2 years fpr it to get low. Remember refrigerant does just vanish. If it was low then means it leaked out somewhere.

  13. It’s a good price for a professional garage. Especially including water pump and thermostat. That’s what I would charge. If you want to go to one of the back street garages you could probably get it done for 2,000-2,500. But in reality, paying an extra £100-150 to someone who knows what they are doing is worth it. It’s a twice in a lifetime thing.

  17. If anyone can recommend a garage for Pajero Servicing in Abu Dhabi. That would be great!

  18. It does seem high. Without the water pump it would cost in the region of AED 1500 - 1800. I got mine done recently. If you need to change some of the seals then it would cost a bit more.

  19. The only advice I can offer for stubborn or difficult to find rattles is to find garage that has a NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) kit. They can hook up a couple of microphones to an oscilloscope while driving the vehicle, and provided the technician is able to interpret the resulting waveform, he can pinpoint the source of the rattle in minutes.

  22. Check the small vacuum hoses on the front diff actuator. They tend to wear out. Make sure the piston that locks/unlocks the front wheels is not full of sand and debris. You'll find lots of information on google about this common Pajero issue. it's either 1) The solenoids which are located in the engine compartment 2) The vacuum hoses between solenoid and the diaphragm 3) Stuck actuator (piston) that engages or disengages 4WD 4) Vacuum operated diaphragm 5) Sensor on the transfer case. For some more information (there might be slight differences between the Pajero generations) http://4wd.blogeasy.com/article.view.run?articleID=318776

  23. @derik I can write up all I want, but you will only realize the difference if you join us once. We too will get a chance to know you better and discuss this further. From my personnel opinion having driven off-road for over 10 years and been on both sides, when I have done a few drive with friends and done it as a club. When you are driving in private you might take things seriously and have all the equipment, but those around you would always keep depending on you, where as in a club as you grow you realize that you need to carry some equipment as an individual and along with your driving capability your safety tools also increase. Within 10 friends you are limited to certain areas and would not venture out much, plus if friends are busy or have other engagement you will be left with no drive at all. Whereas in a club there is a drive posted very week, sometimes multiple drives and you can join one which suits your level, having a 100+ members helps, because atleast 10 - 15 cars would want to attend every week. The first year we had no official structure in Carnity due to which we faced several problems, after introducing structure last year, more people enjoy their level of drive, learn with enthusiasm as they want to grow and help others and we make new friends every week. in a friendly drive you will not be able to discover so many places as the comfort level is not so much, you might always sacrifice your drive style to suit the lowest level member in your friends, whereas in a structured club you can join the drives you like or lower level drives knowing that it is going to be slower than your style of drive. As a club you will get to taste several flavours as everybody as individuals has their own preferred terrain and drive style. plus with so many minds at work we are always trying to discover and try out new areas with intermediate drivers and above. I like the way @Frederic has tried to give you an example of a gym, or the way @Emmanuel has expressed his concern as we do not know your drive level or drive style along with your friends or the equipment available to you or the areas you visit or if you have tried to explore new terrains. We are always open to questions and appreciate your question. I have been off-roading for over 10 years, but I still learn from people who ask questions and the many challenges we face during each drive. We are blessed at Carnity to have a very strongly knitted team and all those who join have a like minded approach. Once again I would like to welcome you and your friends to join us and we can chat further on this subject. I am sure after driving with us a couple of times most of your questions will be answered without a word being said.

  24. I would go with Nissan Xterra with that budget. For sleeping inside i think @EmVarlet can answer if it is possible. It is powerful, easy to maintain and as i see from Emmanuel it is extreme reliable. Land Cruiser very good option but finding clean one is hard.
