  1. TRIP REPORT Al Qudra is an area that offers something to every level of offroaders. Seeing the sign up for this drive, which was mainly a Fewbie convoy except for a couple of Newbies I felt that if the convoy drives well, this is a perfect convoy to scale the level along the drive. Everyone reached with a max 5 mins delay, which is really appreciated, as time is extremely precious in the month of June. Newly promoted @Shiju Manuel was my second lead and he did a very good job of following instructions and rerouting the convoy as required. @Tero Vallas and @paolo dassi were the Newbies in the convoy, but they showed confidence in approaching the dune, good steering control and following exactly the car in front. Seeing that the convoy was managing well and with no major refusals or stucks, it gave the confidence that we can up the level. So we started side slopping closer to the ridge and wherever the opportunity provided to crisscross over to the other side. Mistakes were made by trying to fight gravity, but once it was explained to everyone individually they knew what was required and from the next dune onwards, one could see the vast improvement. And this is what makes a good offroader, to learn from the past mistakes and keep improving. Well done to all the Fewbies on the convoy, @Chaitanya D @Kalahari (in his new Red toy), @Jun Zamora, @Nikhil Saju Paul @asifk Big thanks to @Ale Vallecchi and @sertac for supporting the drive and helping with recoveries.

  2. To me, one of the signs we might be getting back to some sense of normality is that Carnity drives are back. You know that with @Frederic in the lead it will always be well organized and planned so that there are enough challenges, opportunities to learn and fun. With @Brette sweeping and @Jeepie as centre forward it was nice to have the opportunity to sit as a passenger again. I hope it's not a boring refrain, but watching while not driving is a priveleged position to watch what's going on and step in where needed. In the early morning pre summer heat we were all on time, with flags and deflating to get moving nice and early. A good thing too with temperatures rising fast. It did at times feel like the rest of us were intruding on a Pajero love in, with so many on the drive. Admittedly there were also quite a lot of jeeps too ... but we like to keep a lower profile 😂 I am not sure if this was @Anish S first experience as second lead. He drove with caution and attention, knowing that the convoy was following. Perhaps it was with that in mind he needed the first recovery as he crested on an early dune. With a quick tug we were off again and finding the dunes looking more like a Dutch seaside panorama than Arabian desert. It makes for quite a bumpy ride as a passenger! We benefited on the drive from a few Fewbies, always on hand to help if others in the convoy found themselves in trouble. @Mels Wolf @Foxtrot Oscar and @Nacho let their experience shine through and I am sure that being able to watch them gives other drivers confidendde they can make it through. @Nizam Deen found the going tough from time to time and @Pickey Singh drove with customary caution as we made it to a completely pristine play area for the first stop of the morning. It was great to see so many people testing their skills on this wide dune and everyone acquitted themselves very well. The next challenge was the technical dunes leading to the base of Fossil Rock. All the newbies @RohanH @Jose Martin and in particular @Incognitoes handled the challenges amazingly well and everyone made it to the top of the rock without any problem. @Frederic had a new challenge for today which was to descend through the soft sand on the back of the rock, rather than take the direct descent, and it did prove challenging for quite a few. Everyone acquitted themselves well, in particular one amazing self recovery by @Incognitoes. Both myself and @Jeepie were really impressed with this first drive ... we think the truth is you've been out playing before 😁 With more technical dunes to overcome there was a moment to rest again as we had to dig out another stuck. Once that was sorted we slowly continued to the exit and reflation point. A big change for Carnity due to COVID is that we can no longer chat at the end of a drive, and i really miss it. It is a big part of why Carnity is such a great club, but as times dictate, we said our quick goodbyes and made our way onwards. Thanks to @Frederic @Brette and @Jeepie for keeping everyone else moving and managing the drive perfectly. Thanks to everyone else for your contributions to another great drive. See you soon in the sand.

  3. Awesome drive today guys. Thanks again to @Gaurav for leading us to a newbie drive with a fewbie feel. Thanks to @Ale Vallecchiand @Wrangeldtoo. I am impressed with the VW Touareg @amro elshafey Just to share an observation. Communication is very important during the drives. I believe that is determines the safety of everyone. It is therefore important that if anyone is in any difficulty please communicate. This also includes, if you decide to pull over or pull out from the convoy. Thanks guys again for the great afternoon.

  6. Quite a "fewbie"ish newbie drive at Qudra today morning. Well directed by @Srikumar super supported by @Ale Vallecchi and @sertac. Nice learning doing a few Crest crossing and the difficulty gradually increasing was getting more fun with very few refusals and tugs. It is indeed getting very hot in the desert once it gets over 9am, as we are getting into the peak summer months. Pictures uploaded in gallery

  7. Yet another thrilling drive this morning in al Qudra area! Thanks @Srikumar for leading the convoy and @Ale Vallecchi and @sertac for looking after us newcomers and providing useful suggestions and tips. Tip of the day - already stressed multiple times in almost every drive - never fight gravity. After a couple of mistakes of mine, the clear explanations of @Srikumar made it is easy to me to understand when is the moment to turn down rather than start fighting a battle that will eventually be lost! The dunes we approached made a perfect scenario to improve this essential skill. Up and down from reasonable sized dunes and crest crossing proved to be exciting and requiring a good amount of attention and concentration. Thanks to all the drivers and passengers involved in this morning drive. You find some pictures in the gallery, fewer than usual from my side as my photo team (the ladies) was at home this morning.

  12. Driving to Mahafiz while spotting a friendly TJ on my wings is an assurance that the day will be good... 😀 Having arrived at the meeting point at 6:45, our trusty companion @Pickey Singh was already deflating his Discovery, and the white Carnity flag was proudly blowing in the wind. @Incognitoes arrived around the same time, and brought her lovely dog Chewbacca. Having everyone arriving on time and even deflated by 7 has the great advantage that we can head out early which is a blessing during these hot days. A big thanks to all for that ! Having appointed @Anish S as my second lead, i knew that he has the skills to slightly reroute where needed, and he did so good. After about the first 20 mins, in an attempt to get out of the basic track, i went over a tiny dune where i already felt that it was a bit of a "crester" and before i realized, my second lead experienced how crest-prone it was. A gentle pull of the rope was enough to bring him over and we circled back to meet our friends on the other side to reroute. We headed out to the play area where all could practice some side-sloping. As mentioned, it was a good opportunity to test the technicalities and differences of driving in D vs selecting tiptronic. @Nizam Deen got a bit carried away and kept trying to go higher and higher, and eventualy hit a nasty bump at the higher point of the dune. In these situations, things can quickly take a turn for the worse, so i keep stressing to all that's it OK to be enthusiastic, but never to try to go beyond the limits, or it will come back and bite very hard. Having said that, all did well and had good control over their vehicles. We moved out and navigated towards Fossil Rock and made it up easily. For a change i did not want to descend from the regular point, but drove around it. To my surprise the track that used to be there that would easily take us around was not to be found. Another reminder on how much dunes and formations keep changing. I slightly rerouted to descend further down and while going over a very small dune with a small bump, @Pickey Singh his bottom bumper decided to wedge itself nicely inbetween the dune and the bump. A few minutes of shoveling got him out. but unfortunately the lip itself looked a bit bent. We only encountered some small refusals in this drives, some in which @Incognitoes recovered herself nicely, it was indeed quite clear you have driven before. Just be careful not too take quick decisions when trying to get out of the situation. Think calmly, listen to the instructions of the senior behind you, and then follow them as accurate as possible. You have driven very well today ! I was brilliantly supported by @Jeepie, @Wrangeld, and @Brette, but also got the help of other fewbies like @Mels Wolf, @Foxtrot Oscar, and @Nacho who keep coming every week and growing fast. So nice to see this. Eagerly looking forward to the next drive !

  13. Although I couldn’t talk in person with each one of you but it was great driving with you all. i enjoyed a lot the desert and the dunes. big thanks @Gaurav for arranging the route to accommodate me in the first half, for leading the convoy successfully And for your sincere advices. @E.C. TAN It was very good to try it’s off road capability, may be if lifted up with 2 inches will give more confidence on the dunes but in general it took them smoothly.

  23. Just like any other sport or hobby, off road driving too has it's own etiquette's. Often times these are not spoken out loud or mentioned in public to not to embarrass anyone. If you like to continue off road driving, you should know these basic offroad driving etiquette's and follow them. Pay 100% undivided attention to the instructions: Whether it's in briefing or on radio communication while recovering, give your 100% attention and if you cannot due to some incoming call or passenger distraction, ask them to repeat. Most of the instructions are given so that you can drive safely. If you still live in the mobile world or loud music or radio volume turned down, you will miss out on critical safety instruction that can end up breaking your 4x4 or bones, seriously. Follow the instruction PRECISELY: From as simple as deflate to 12-14 PSI, drive in HI gear, engage to LO as soon as you get stuck. These instructions have been given to YOU for YOUR safety and enhancing your offroad driving experience. If you deflate to 22 PSI instead of 12, you will have endless refusals, stucks and A/T Transmission & Engine will soon overheat. If you don't engage on LO as soon as you get stuck, you will lose the most critical surface area in which LO gear could have saved the day, rather than toiling in HI gear for first few minutes and making the stuck even more worst for your car. Acknowledge the message: Always acknowledge the radio messages as the reliability of radio communication is highly questionable. Step out and help: When you are stuck and someone is helping you, it's a BASIC MANNER to step out of your car and help the Marshal or senior member who is helping you. You can help them clearing the sand, fixing the rope or inspect the stuck or plan of recovery. Sitting inside a stuck vehicle and waiting is the worst and most offending thing to do. If someone is helping you to check tire pressure, then step out and observe, how to delate to precise PSI. Disclaimer: In some 1% tricky angles or situation, if you have a doubt or difficulty to come out, ask the Marshal or senior member: If its safe for you to step out? Please don't assume and sit inside. Observe and learn: Every stuck and recovery has a lot to teach. Observe and learn from your stucks and discuss with Marshals how to not to get stuck again in a similar way. If you don't observe and learn you will end up doing the same mistakes over and over again. Learn Vs Serve: All the knowledge and experience are there to help you learn offroading and not just to serve you. So that as soon as you learn, you start practising it and become more capable offroader and be able to help others in the future.

Make sure you have a deflator, flag, and your radio. We will be ending nearby the gas station, so a compressor is optional. 33. This is well fabricated and a good idea. Just be aware of the fact that in the desert most likely you’ll need to be able to insert the jack from weird angles and have very limited space. That will create issues for a bottle jack I am afraid. Secondly, once you reach higher levels on the off-road ranking, you will be fixing pop-outs on other vehicles too, so your tailormade solution won’t work anymore.

  35. Hi Guys, Today i have fix the rear bumper issue of my Pajero with an aluminium sheet neatly bended and fix along with the rear bumper. The work i did in Ajman ( Al Reem Garage) and they charged me only 100 Dhs and it was nearly one hour job. They have done the work very neatly. If any one wants to do the same, i have attached the garage business card. Contact person Mr. Raju.

  36. Hi @RohanH, I’ve initially decided to make most mods on the gen4 pajero which makes it very nice to drive now, but in hindsight I could have also bought a 3rd car that will do the exact same thing. For me still a bit of a doubt whether I’ll stick to it or in the long run will by a dedicated off-road vehicle... also having 3 cars isn’t very easy to maintain which will take me a lot of time... if you only have 1 car now I guess it makes most sense to buy an extra as you will rely on the car a lot more.... Another option in this price range would be to buy a TJ, which I’ve had the pleasure to drive as well and as an open top it’s amazing to drive through the dunes... although it is and remains a Jeep which need some dirhams to keep them running...
