  1. My apologies for penning a report on this drive late but I was quite tied up the last few days. Well for starters, Jun 19th, 2020, will be a memorable day for me as I managed my first official trip lead. @Srikumar has covered most of the details but from my perspective, I believe i was blessed to have such a lovely group of drivers to join me. @Roshan Abraham as my second lead did a great job in rerouting when we came across tricky spots. Followed by @Chaitanya D who was testing out the offroading prowess of his recently purchased X terra. I hope you get the heating issue sorted out soon buddy. I am glad we all had a lot of fun climbing up pink rocks and i could see that most of us weren't satisfied with just one go 😆 The rest of the lot - @Szymon Stankiewicz, @Febin Frederic, @Kalahari, @Rinelle Sanaani and @Najeeb Mohammed managed extremely well as I slightly bumped up the level at certain places and you all pulled through with flying colors. And a special shout out to @Desert Dweller for keeping a watchful eye on the convoy and providing support whenever required. I owe a majority of the success of this drive to @Srikumar as his guidance on my maiden lead trip was key. Thank you all for joining me on this special day and i am glad that you guys had a fun drive. I sincerely look forward to more. And a special shout out to the carnity seniors who taught me, supported me and believed in me, thanks to whom I finally managed to lead a drive - @Gaurav bhai, @Rahimdad bhai, @Srikumar, @Emmanuel and @Frederic.

  2. Dear fellow Carnity members. While the posted drive is filling up, allow me to give you a first glimpse at the track we have prepared for you this coming Friday. With the support of @Srikumar, and the presence, so far, of @martin, @Vanessa8580, @Kalahari, @Rizwanm2, @luwaimn, @Rinelle Sanaani, @Jun Zamora, @Lucky sAm, @Mahmoud Hamzawy and @Desert Dweller, we'll cover one of the most varied terrains in Dubai. We should find much less vegetation than around Pink and Fossil Rock, with occasional group of trees hiding behind the dunes, a few technical dune areas, where we'll need to finesse our way around, several stretches of long dunes, where to practice side sloping, as well as some ridge riding and criss-crossing, and sabkha areas where we can make good time. The goal is to reach the area of Little Sweihan, and if possible, proceed from there, after a little playing around, toward our exit point at Solar Park. I will be more precise about the itinerary's conditions in a couple of days. In the meantime, PLEASE, remember to click on the "Totally Agree" icon to acknowledge having read and understood the Covid-19 compliance rules. All those who do not confirm this we'll not be accepted in the drive. See you Friday.

  3. TRIP REPORT With the weather getting hotter by the day, a morning person like me has also started preferring the late afternoon/evening drives. All the drivers reached the deflation point ahead of time, which is very much appreciated both by drivers as well as by our vehicles as it limits the idle time in this heat. While I was deflating @RohanH mentioned to me that on his dashboard the 4x4 system orange light was blinking. From past experience of owning a Pajero, it was suspected to be a solenoid or vacuum leak issue. Sadly, knowing that his 4x4 would not serve him properly we had to ask him to exit. With the rest of the convoy ready to move we did a customary radio check, and for a second week in a row @Roshan Abraham had issues with his radio. This time (unlike last week) everyone in the convoy could hear him except for the trip lead Shamil. Upon suggestions that we change to another channel, it was found that his radio was not properly programmed to all the Carnity frequencies. I wish to reiterative to all Carnity members to ensure that you program all the 5 frequencies on your radio so that we can change the channel incase if we have any issues or disturbances. This is not optional but a mandatory requirement. After sorting it out with a spare radio, Shamil started moving with Roshan has his second lead, @Desert Dweller in center forward and with me in Sweep position. Initially we encountered some technical dunes, from which Shamil rerouted towards the more broad dunes that this area has to offer. Within no time we reached the base of Pink Rocks and we were all taking multiple turn going up. As this area is less visited in these months the cross tracks and bumps are very limited giving all of us an opportunity to properly test our vehicle's hill climb capabilities. With the sun starting to set, we moved towards Big Red. This stretch offer some amazing rolling dunes and Shamil set the right pace throughout this area. There was plenty of ridge riding and criss crossing that challenged all the fewbies without going over the limit. And with the limited refusals we were able to go upto Big Red and return back to Pink Rocks. And for all the limited refusals we had, I could hear @Desert Dweller's prompt guidance on the radio, helping everyone . Its wonderful to see the confidence that she has gained and the way she is actively participating on the drives. With sunset, we had a brief portion of night drive on the back side of Pink Rock. Unfortunately, @Kalahari stepped on some barbed fences that ripped through his tyre sidewall. With the help of Roshan and Shamil we were able to replace the tyre in good time. Another important lesson for everyone is to ensure that you have a working spare tyre, as in earlier drives I have noticed few members not sure about their spare tyre condition or having different sized spare tyres. Offroading does stress the tyres and it can cause failure at any point of time. So a proper working spare tyre is absolutely essential. As it had crossed 8 pm, we quickly exited out on to the road which brought to an end a wonderful evening that was well planned and executed by Shamil. I am sure everyone more than enjoyed your first lead. Well done buddy and I was very happy to be a part of your drive. Also, well done to all the drive participants for keeping up the pace to make it so enjoyable. See you next week.

  7. As you rightly titled 'The one with the master class' it's always interesting to drive in @Gaurav's convoy and yesterday was a drive worth mentioning. Also, I thank everyone for a delightful drive. @Wrangeld you are absolutely correct that a slightest hesitation will get you stuck and that's the exact reason I got stuck too. Even though I miss the roaring sound of the Hummer, I missed its differential even more when I got myself stuck 😅. Thanks to @Ale Vallecchi and his kinetic rope I got out in no time. I was eager to test my new X in the dessert and wasn't disappointed. Looking forward for the next drive.

  8. Such an amazing drive we had....thank you guys @Gaurav @Ale VallecchiVallecchi @Wrangeld @Jeepie...I had the opportunity to learn and experience different situations.....it was my first time doing crisscross and I am looking forward for enhancement....another important thing I learned was not to just follow the track but to revaluate the conditions because it changes and sometimes minor adjustments are required.... Similarly re checking of tire pressure is essential because the pressure do fluctuate with temperature and in my case today I think the stem was not tight enough so I lost pressure and luckily I could re-inflate with the assistance of @Ale Vallecchi I really appreciated the effort made by Richard @Wrangeld in making such a valuable and detailed drive report. Keep it up....

  9. Trip Report. For me waking up in the morning is one of the most difficult things on a work in day. Thankfully my wife's complaint is on weekends I'm up and ready to go before the sun comes out. So rolled out as soon as the clock strike 6am, started my car, filled in gas and after a cup of tea and a quick sandwich I was well on my way to the deflation point. Upon reaching the meeting point I was glad to see all cars already deflated and ready to go, but there was another bunch of offroader getting ready for their own adventures. It seems more people are getting comfortable coming out to the desert again, but I really appreciate the fact that our convoy follow all the Covid19 precautions as instructed. After a quick deflation and putting my flag up, it was time for a quick brief. By this time @Brette was well positioned to arrange the convoy as per my list confirmed last night. Everyone was quick to respond and we were on our way to find what the day had in store for us. I was surprised by the slight but welcome coolness in the air and a more than gentle breeze to keep us comfortable with Windows down. As per our format we started of with some easy dunes just to get warmed up and increased to difficulty level gradually. After some awesome dunes and a convoy which could not be stopped by anything we reached our first play area. With me being the first to attempt I found it a bit bumpy but not with any risks as long as our teachings were put to good practice. No surprises there as everyone followed instructions and gave us a great glimpse of what a sand shower should look like. On second thought I was surprised by the extreme cool headed and cautious yet brave approach used by @syed salman raza to do this sideys on only his second drive. This goes to prove that some people take time to learn while some are quick to catch on. We moved from there and quickly found ourselves on through some treacherous dunes and on to the power lines track. As we were heading towards Fossil Rocks we met the other group just moving and said hi to @frederic who took a breather to greet us and inform us they were headed to Faya. With our convoy doing so well I told him we would meet up at Faya if we managed to cross Fossil Rock in good time. As we set off to the top of Faya we all reached on top in great time. @Brette again stepped up to take responsibility to send everyone down as per my instructions. As I made it down and announced the arrival of each member, he had them ready waiting up for the car ahead to clear. In no time and safely we found ourselves down and as agreed by all headed towards Faya. We started off well and it was just a matter of time before we reach Faya and play to our hearts content. But we had our first refusal. Bravely after a little time consuming recovery we started again towards Faya, but had a second refusal. At this point knowing full well that the Sun had decided to make it hot and difficult with the sand becoming softer and more difficult to manage we headed down to the track and decided to head out, leaving Faya for another day. As we were heading out the distance in the convoy meant we had a disconnect somewhere. However with somewhat easy tracks the rest of the convoy managed to find us and reunite as we headed out again. Upon reaching tarmac, we continued slowly towards some trees with shade so that we could inflate with social distancing and in the shade of the trees. All in all a great drive with @Incognitoes managing the second lead like a pro. She followed all my instructions well and on 2 occasions when I found myself in some trouble she was ready to stop and use alternate path as instructed to save the convoy from any danger. @marks followed in third position and managed well, with a few interesting conversations when we had the chance. @Yousef Alimadadi improving quite a bit from the last time I saw him drive, he is doing very well and will soon be knocking on our doors for a promotion. @syed salman raza with his mighty Jeep didn't seem like he has never been off-road before, but a short conversation with him revealed he was only following the lead and making sure to replicate what he saw. That is great observation and a great start for him in this sport. @Jun Zamora seemed more familiar with his Jeep and seemed to do much better as compared to his last drive with me. However there is still the radio issue that persists as I kept hearing a bell as he spoke and that radio needs to be tuned correctly or he might need a new set. @luwaimn has come a long way from the timid guy who wanted to get through without hurting his Prado to a more confident person finding a way to get through most situations without a scratch. However to grow to the next level he does need to take a few leaps of faith, I'm sure he will find his feet at some point. @Brette was amazing and hard working in that centre forward position to keep the convoy moving at all time and I think everybody realized that and is very appreciative of all his efforts. It was great to hear the voice of@andy_macdxb from time to time as I saw him improve over his last drive. He seemed to be more confident and ready for most situations with some chatter which put life to the convoy. The enthusiasm of @Mehmet Volga was evident as he enjoyed learning and putting the skills he has obtained to good use. @Gregory Perkin although quiet but his presence was felt by the confidence with which he took on all the challenges. @AKR was a sight for sore eyes after a long break, but it was great to see him not having lost his touch, just his car looks much tougher than before, and his skill set makes his car look awesome doing things I've never seen it do before. @George Francis decided to leave his Jeep behind and give a chance to his other ride, which meant he was learning again the difference between his 2 vehicles. Last but the most important part of the convoy was none other than @Colin Jordan who brought along his mosterous Ram Hemi to keep the convoy together and moving at all times. He quietly managed the whole convoy and kept me updated about every movement to keep me at peace and moving from one challenge to another. Everyone please give yourselves a hand and pat your backs for an extremely great day out. Very proud to have such a fantastic team yesterday, and looking forward to learning and spending more time with you all on future drives. My pictures are posted in the gallery.

  17. Unfortunately I know nothing about Nativas hardly even see them on the road and never even driven one. Loss of power could be due to various issues. So start with the easy one first. Check fuel pressure. See if your fuel pump is excessively noisy when with just turn on the car and not start it, you should hear it for a few seconds and then shut off. If it buzzes a lot it could be on its way out. Off roads cars can get sand in their fuel tanks which can clog up the pick up screen hindering the fuel pump. Similarly the fuel filter might have choked up with sand Most cars have a Schrader valve on the fuel rail, exactly the same like your tyre valve, check the fuel pressure there. In a bind I've actually used my tire pressure gauge to check fuel pressure. Check online how much pressure should be normal for your car. I'm guessing 50 ish psi if it's low that means engine isn't getting enough fuel. Rare chance on a working car but maybe your injectors are clogged or sticking. Also check for any leaks in the fuel lines Another easy thing to check is if you throttle body butterfly is working properly. I don't the Nativa has a fly by wire system and is mechanically connected by a cable. So fully press the gas pedal and see if the throttle body opens up properly. Anyways this is as far as I would like to make an educated guess with the limited info available. Also if you car is overheating and not running hot (there is a difference) in 4L that means your cooling system is not up to spec and not cooling properly under heavy load which it should not. Start with the obvious again from fan clutch working your way to the radiator. And as a general note what the hell is wrong with you people it is hot like hell and you people are mucking about in the desert in this heat. I was getting paid and I hated to go out to the desert in this heat and you all doing it for free. You folk are crazy!

  18. This drive is organized in full compliance with the COVID19 guidelines. We expect every member that joins this drive to respect and follow these guidelines strictly in order to not jeopardize someone's health and to ensure we can keep organizing these drives safely. MUST READ: Not following these rules and precautions = Not allowed to drive. No Gathering | No Briefing | No BBQ | No Eating Together | No Touching | No Hugging We are only allowed to drive through the desert, as we are driving on the road now. So we will only do the desert driving just by sitting inside our cars at all the times and leave the drive without socializing or coming close to each other. Just like before we like to continue our desert drives through out the year, but this time we need your immense support to understand the strict control and to help everyone follow them all the time. How to maintain "STRICT" Social Distancing Meeting point will be set slightly (100m - 200m) inside the desert track. You individually deflate your tires on the tarmac before reaching the meeting point. While deflating tires, stop cars 10 meters away from any other car. Drive signup on calendar will be closed on Thursday morning by 9 AM. Convoy numbering and briefing will be posted here on this drive post before 6 PM on Thursday. All participants need to read & acknowledge the briefing by clicking "Totally Agree" reaction. Switch on your radio when you reach the meeting point on the set frequency advised by the trip lead in the critical briefing here. Once everyone reaches to the meeting point, everyone stay inside the car at all the times. Trip lead will do the roll call, convoy numbering recap, critical briefing over the radio. Any suggestions or issues will be discussed over the radio too. You can also speak to other members through the radio only. So please make sure that your radio battery is fully charged. Once all set, trip lead will start the drive as before. Refusal and Recoveries with Social Distancing Every drive will have 1 lead Marshal and 1 or 2 supporting senior members/crew. Whenever there is a stuck or refusal, only a Marshal / Senior Member / Crew is allowed to handle the situation. Everyone else including the stuck car driver, stay inside the car - AT ALL TIMES. Marshal / Senior Member / Crew is only allowed to step out to access the situation and do the recoveries: They will wear mask and gloves at all times when they are outside their car. They will try to help self recover through the radio guidance. If not they will use required recovery gear and do the needful (shovel, tug or winch, as required). If at any time Marshal require help, then only you are allowed to step out by wearing face mask and gloves at all times. Drive completion and inflation There will not be any gathering or sitting down together for food-break like before. Once drive is finished, after reaching the tarmac, everyone is requested to move away 10-20 meters before starting their inflation. 23. The One with the Master Class If you were on @Gaurav's Newbie drive yesterday through Al Qudra, think yourself extremely fortunate. Forget the refusals and stucks for a moment because what we all received yesterday was a master class in dune crossing: one of the most important techniques to learn in off roading if you want to progress and take the hobby further (and further into the wilderness). With everyone at the meeting point at the designated time, we did had a slight delay before moving off. @bunty_and_pops acted as second lead (and did a great job) with our newbie @Vipin Shettydriving the mighty Cherokee and @Magellan, @Janarthan (the new entrant in the Xterra club) and @Anish S making up the front of the convoy ahead of @Jeepie and myself. After the experiences leading the drive in the morning (see separate post if you wish) myself and @Jeepie truly enjoyed the start of this drive as we zig zagged through the cream white sand of AL Qudra. @Gaurav kept a fantastic pace - as did the convoy behind and I am sure that the more experienced drivers toward the back of the convoy @Tbone (another convert to the Xterra afer, as he put it, his Hummer 'retired hurt'), @E.C. TAN, @Rajeevan Vickneswaran and @siddharth maheshwari with @Ale Vallecchi enjoyed the opportunity to ride the dunes as the sand was quite forgiving and stable. As is often the case, it's the things we fear most that cause the problems and crossing the top of a dune, be it straight or criss crossing involves a moment of trust, and that milisecond of doubt is when the momentum is lost and problems are encountered. Even experienced drivers like @Tbone find that they can get stuck if there is that moment of hesitation. It's true to say that @Vipin Shetty did find the going tough in places, but that's what these drives are for. Practice, learn, get help from the seniors and deal with the challenges safely. Getting his car out from a couple of the stucks provided really valuable lessons as they were unusual and required quite a bit of thinking to find the best solution to recover. We also had the opportunity to help out another vehicle whose tyre had shredded in the heat and who did not have the correct tools to replace their wheel. Another lesson in desert etiquette. Even if we think that someone is unwise to travel into the sand alone (less than 3 cars), help them out when they are in trouble. So back to the master class. Not only were we shown how to approach, crest and then turn off a dune, @Gaurav too the time to explain clearly how to do this in words - and then found us moment after moment where this could be put into practice. As we moved to the more technical dunes, there were more challenges. There always are, but we all made it through and went in search of some more playable dunes on the other side of the nature reserve. On that side of Al Qudra, however, the sand was softer and as soon as we entered the dunes Gaurav decided to re route. That was a few seconds too late as we already had a recovery to make ... and then even Gaurav got cested on a dune. Our kinetic ropes will need the week until we are back in the sand to recover as there was quite some work to do with them over this weekend and to get the stuck cars free. It was moving towards dark so @Gaurav led us out to the tarmac through a more direct route a few kms from the gas station where everyone was able to reinflate and make their way home. So, another great drive to have enjoyed and even more lessons learned.

Every time he found himself in difficult situations, he communicated very calmly, listened with attention, and followed instructions without ever panicking. As soon as he'll get more familiar with his car's performance and potential on the sand he'll do great.
