  1. Car owners tend to change their wheels for the looks but in off-roading (and any other motorsport), changing the wheels and tires might be the best bang for the buck performance wise (if chosen wisely). Wheels and tires are unsprung weight and has direct effect on your available power. You must ask yourself what you want to achieve. Why would you like to have beadlock wheels? You can go to a lower PSI, but why do you want to go to a lower PSI? Beadlocks are more heavy so it will have direct impact on your car's available power. As Febin said above, do consider the weight, also for non beadlocks. There are many possibilities, bigger/ smaller rim, different offsets, different profile tires, different ratios. It is good that you first ask, I made the mistake of not asking and just trying, if I had done some research on some LC200 fora, I would've saved myself money. If chosen wisely, the sweet spot of; correct offset, not a too big rim with a relative tall sidewall tire, your car's performance will change drastically in the sand. But every medal has two sides, where you will gain something here you'll probably have to deliver something in return, might it be, road noise or fuel consumption. One thing I would consider as well, is the availability of your tires you are going to choose. You might want to go for a overland trip in the future, or cruising to Oman. Keep in mind that an exotic tire size, might not be available in a tire shop somewhere on the road.

  2. @Jun Zamora initially when I started driving xterra I was getting stuck everywhere even on flat surfaces. Members here who tugged me could remember.🤣 Once after few drives I realized that my driving style needs some change , lower deflating with AT tyres and also the paths u take . Dont go to garages who do a lot of mods at hefty prices for little benefits practically. Off course mods make the car look good and more aggressive but you can do the same soon with the Jeep you have.

  3. I'm glad you ask this question and everyone above has helped you enough with the best of the knowledge. Air filter alone is enough to make your throttle more responsive (which you will feel) but wont add any or much hp without tune up and other power mods like headers, exhaust, straight pipes, high performance plugs and wires etc. I love what Fredy mentioned as many times, used car or 4x4 owner run behind big names and big mods and often miss the basics that can actually add lost hp just by fixing those basics.

  4. ABSOLUTELY NOT. Your stock air intake is totally fine, and 200hp in a Short Wheelbase Wrangler is plenty enough to get you through every terrain. On top of that, modifications to air intake (cold air intake or others) will only give marginal improvements. (few percent)...negligible. Remember that doing hill climbs in soft summer sand are very difficult. More improvements can be made with good off-road tyres, lower deflation, and practice practice practice to find the ideal gear and technique. Are you sure the original horses are still alive and kicking ? - injectors, spark plugs, dirty MAF sensor, compression issues these are all potential horsepower killers if not in the best condition.

  5. I see you are driving a FJ Cruiser. I know it is tempting to change the looks of your car, but in my opinion your car is stock already very capable and good looking. Try to resist the mods etc, drive it for at least a summer and winter season. Then you'll know more which direction you want to go.

  6. Thanks for sharing your insights on this @Febin Frederic , while the throaty sound makes it enticing I think for now I'll focus more on improving the performance. It's really great to hear opinions from you guys, rather than just from my mechanic. Thanks again!

  7. Really appreciate this @Frederic ! Your suggestions just saved me from spending 1600 dhs this week. I absolutely agree on focusing on my tires instead and working to find the ideal gear and techniques. I do think that the sand also made it more challenging for the jeep. I'll make sure to get my horses checked this week. Again, thanks for the great recommendations!

  9. A cold air intake without a tune doesn't do anything. But still you can't expect a significant power increase out of it unless you go with a force induction . Jeeps are not race cars, the oem air intakes are less restrictive and tuned to optimize the performance. But if u r looking for more sound from under the hood, then go for it. I have one installed in my jeep(experimental) . But i don't notice any performance gain , may be its too minimal to notice and that too in higher rpm where you don't drive often, though they makes a lovely throaty sound.

  14. Hi all - I'm looking for new wheels for my JLU. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to go? Also, are beadlock rims worth the extra cost? best regards, Craig

  15. I am still learning the ropes of offroading from the experts here. I agree that many 4WD in stock form are more than sufficient for newbie trails.

  16. @Xaf thanks for sharing. It is good for me to learn from others' experience. I did toyed with the idea of upsizing the rims and tyres before.

  17. Long story short: I went from stock 285/60 18 ET60 to Rays TE37 (Imitation) 285/60 18 ET55 + 20mm spacer (spacers were necessary to avoid rubbing with shocks reservoirs. Same tires. Highway super comfort, lighter wheels, better performance, but off-road, fairly quick a pop out + no grip on sidies. I wanted to change the profile of the tires, went to 285/70 17 ET0, I had already a feeling that this might not work, because the 6 cm difference is a lot. But hey, we are in Dubai, where do you see more LC200's on the road, so the garages should know what they are selling. Asked them, does the 0 offset works? No problem! very good look! I tried them, too much rubbing + it changes the geometry, so probably not good for your barrels. Then I went to my current setup, same tires, 285/70 17 ET40. This is the sweet spot for me. I am curious how the performance will be if I go to a narrower tire, but as the saying says; "never change a winning team" I'll stick to this setup for now. What I would have done different? 18. Trail blazer stock ground clearance is a concern, but not for Renault Duster. Although Renault Duster is 4WD but still it's not a proper 4x4 as it's not having a low range gearing, so you cannot really make duster a weekend desert toy, unless he is only joining the newbie drives. Secondly I feel in Duster it's gear upshifting is a major concern than anything else.

  24. Thanks to @Gaurav for another very enjoyable drive with some great views. Very much appreciated my position in the convoy today behind @Islam Soliman I was able to match the path, speed and momentum easily and found myself understanding my Pajero even more today. Today I learned to use less gas than previous weeks and as a result definitely felt the handling to be a lot more stable and am getting more confident. Looking forward to trying the play areas in another drive or two. Some other learnings: Trying to find a secluded dune for a bio break will result in you walking at least 4 times farther than anticipated and bringing half the desert back in your shoes. Sometimes there can be miscommunications about lefts and rights, if in doubt come to a complete stop and clarify. I need extra hands to operate the car, walkie-talkie, camera and hydrate simultaneously. Having a copilot to take pics, chuckle in relief as @Kieran McKeown and the Duster reverses off a vertical dune and remarkably remains intact and help with deflation, pre drive, is 100 times better than going it alone. MeanMother air compressor worked a treat! Remote control inflation is the future!

  25. When joining Carnity Off-road Club, there will come a time that you’ll need to start looking for deflators, pressure gauges, compressors, flag, etc... Dragon Mart is a wonderful shopping paradise but finding the item you need is indeed sometimes a daunting task. So I listed below some shops and their locations that might be of help: Off-road Flag Section: EA Address: EA01 Shop: S&D Autoparts Deflator tool and pressure gauge Section: EB Address: EBD05 Shop: Taizhou Yian Trade Two Way Radio Lots of options, but the BA section has the most shops. Look out for the big CRONY labeled shop. They have the Motorola MT777 = 120 - 150 AED. Crony MT777 = 80 - 120 AED Also the Baofeng UV-5R is still popular and easy to find. Costs about 75 AED. Floor Jack & Tools JZX shop in section EA, no. EAA25 2 Ton floor jack with swivel neck = 120 - 150 AED (Recommended) Tool kit = 50-100 AED Compressor Mainly available in BA section. Have a walk and haggle a bit. The Camel logo brand is pretty good. Available in single or twin cylinder model. Single cylinder = 100 -150 AED Twin Cylinder = 150 -200 AED (Recommended) Please take note that we are not affiliated with these shops nor do we give any guarantees about their items. We solely provide the location where you can find these most common items to save your time.
