  1. Dear Desertnauts. Carnity is very pleased to present you with another, brand new, area to visit during our weekend drives. This time, we have explored, and chosen for you, the stretch of dunes between the farming villages of Lahbab and Margham. This is an area that some of you may know also for the presence of one the Royal villas. Perhaps for this reason, it is very little visited by off-roading clubs, with the few tracks that one encounters mostly made by locals. The terrain is mostly made of low yellow colored dunes, not very high and with frequent openings between cordons, that allow an intricate, yet quite safe, navigation. Some low bushy vegetation is present (as almost everywhere else this year) but less dense than in other areas nearby. There is also a very nice play area, of relatively taller dunes, presenting some large sand bowls. The skills required to complete the drive successfully will be controlled driving over technical dunes, side sloping techniques, and principles of ridge riding and crossing over (low dunes). In order to allow more drivers to enjoy this nice new playground, we have decided to launch the "Relay drive" format. As explained in the post's Action Plan, we have organized 2 separate convoys (this one and Richard's), that will follow roughly the same path, but each leaving at opposite ends, and exiting at the other convoy' starting point. The 2 convoys plan to meet halfway through the drive to exchange a symbolic "baton" (like in a relay track race). We think the "relay" format is a safe way to drive 2 convoys through the same area, rather than creating one convoy, too large to manage effectively. @Hatim Patharia, @Nivin, @Mehmet Volga, @Biju Abdul, @marks, @Miguel Ibarbia, @Mohamed Seidam, @Nabil Bishara, @Shaaz Sha, @Melenany, and @Kalahari I look forward to seeing you all on Friday. Have a great week.

  2. Drive Report It was fantastic to see all new leaders up in the morning and showing up at meeting point ahead of time and be fully ready with deflation, flags before the drive time. Weather become chilly as per few and that gave us first hour of enjoying the drive with windows down to cherish this much awaited cool breeze. This was the second session of leaders lead drive where new leaders supposed to show their nav app homework of marking all above points and then drive with nav app to certain locations. Almost everyone did the good work and marked all the required points to start exploring. We started with @sertac and he manage to lead beautifully well in an area filled with 1000 cross tracks. And he manage to take all of us safely to Pink rock in no time. Perfect handling, confidence and routing choice made it possible to reach pink rock smoothly (almost). Keep it up Sertac. He did covered 8.78 km in 37 minutes. From Pink rock @Vanessa8580 started to lead till Big Red and she thoroughly enjoyed the drive and followed the track precisely and then gradually moved up to make her own track very wisely. Good thinking Vanessa. She did covered 12.56 km in 36 minutes. From Big red @Tbone started the joy ride and took all of us for much awaited big rolling dunes behind big red and continue to march towards the pink rock area. He showed a tremendous improvement from last leader lead session where he left with some difficult area to lead, but today he really showed his true potential and capabilities to lead. Well done Tbone. He did covered 10.5 km in 27 minutes. From Pink rock @Brette took over to take us to Tawi Nizwa farm and we all were truly impressed with his lead capability to find a fresh track in Pink Rock area where just an hour before we crossed through the 1000 cross tracks. This is an exceptional class of leading to always look for a smoother area to traverse (as far as possible) while being creative to explore near-by area than following existing tracks. Very well done Brette. He did covered 12.3 km in 31 minutes. Last but not least we have had @Kalahari with a different challenge given to tone down from an "Advance level" lead to a "fewbie level" which he perfectly scaled down and took all of us from Tawi nizwa farm to 2nd Dec exit. Well tried Kalahari. He did covered 6.5 km in 19 minutes. Heartiest congratulations to all new leaders for doing fantastic lead and showing us different flavor (most imp). Like we mentioned in debrief this was not a contest of who can better, longer or faster but a session to train you to lead with a navigation skills and free mind. Above numbers of km and minutes is not a parameter of any comparison as each one of you have had different stucks, refusal and pop out based on your own leading style. Moving forward you all need to work on making your drives as smooth and enjoyable as possible than competing on any number games (just clarifying). Get ready for the third and last session of leaders lead where each one of you will be leading through a technical dunes without any existing tracks, purely based on your navigational and leading skills. After that drive we will conduct a session of technical and extreme recoveries to conclude your training and let you practice more under the supervision of existing trip lead and Marshals.

  3. Congrats to all the new leaders ! I still remember my first lead in Pink Rock at night time and know how stressful it feels, but rest assured it will come as natural as driving in a convoy very soon.

  4. As some of you may know, among other (less fancy) things, I happen to be a UAE GCAA / DCAA licensed commercial multi-rotor RPAS pilot (i.e. I fly drones at professional level) and I would love to put my skills at service for some extra fun within the Carnity Club. Now that we approach the nicest season with milder temperatures which make a short desert break more enjoyable, I would like to launch a "Carnity Leaders Drone Challenge": for every drive that I will attend, I will take with me one of my drones and challenge the Drive Leaders to plan their drives so that they include an approx. 15 mins drone shooting session capturing a particularly inspiring, spectacular, scenographic, or adrenalin-fueled session of the drive, using all convoy members as performing stunt actors. The shooting doesn't need to be lasting 15' every time. We will simply dedicate max 15' to shoot some nice desert off-road riding aerial footage, in multiple short videos with all sorts of nice cinematic scenes. Out of 15' mins shootings I would expect we get 2' or 3' of quality footage. Each drive leader should come up with his/her own idea of a spectacular shooting in a different selected desert location and I will try, to the best of my abilities, to shoot as per their imagination, while the convoy drivers will be showcasing their best driving perfomances. The result, in a couple of months, will be a showreel featuring some of the very best Carnity moments, which will explain to our families, friends and potential new joiners better than any words the magic of desert off-roading. @Rahimdad, @Gaurav, @Srikumar, @Wrangeld, @Emmanuel, @Frederic, @Jeepie, @Ale Vallecchi, are you in? Everyone else... Pls add to the original idea and help make it even better. P.S.: the ones below are a couple of quick aerial shots at Pink Rock on my Absolute Newbie Drive, last March 20th.

  5. After a very misty start of the drive, which almost caused me to miss the entrance to the dunes, the sun came up and the mist disappeared quickly. The start of the drive was smooth and I felt a little concerned that I wasn't challenging you enough, because everybody was managing extremely well. So I thought we will just raise the bar and see how we get on. Thankfully that immediately resulted in a couple of refusals. Letting me know that this was probably the right level. @marks was doing a good job as sweep and I think he enjoyed the new responsibility. @Veedooshee was doing a good job as second lead and had to wait for me to redirect a couple of times. She did have the disadvantage of following a SWB Jeep in her LWB Pajero, but I love the spirit of never giving up and keep on trying. @Wrangeld had his work cut out as CF but that was just my way of keeping him from getting to comfortable in the airco of his new vehicle. Thank you all for making it an enjoyable drive!

  9. Hello dear off-roaders last Friday morning and evening drives were rich in thrill and experience and every drive carries along with it it’s own taste. revising my own tape after each drive I discover details that it might have been overlooked unintentionally. Watching others tapes discovering how much still I don’t know and how much patience and determination is required to learn precision and how to be in control from this weekend drive it turned out for me at least how important is the protection of the front underneath ( skid plate , bash plate , under armer ...etc ) which off-course will never be a substitute to the skills but it helps sometimes when waves slam the boat unexpectedly. also I learn my own vehicle dynamics and response and when to release the gas and when to push , when to steer or just let go . Also I realized how can you trouble shoot and try find solution on your own. last but not least learning how to Lead is the trust of the whole convoy behind that will do the best to maintain compliance and stick to the rules of convoy and tasks given and this is well seen and appreciated by all. I wanted to share my thoughts that’s why I wrote. cheers 👍🚙🌷

  17. A sandbag is indeed a good option to put over the recovery rope. You can buy these "jacket" like bags that you can easily fill up with some sand. In the club we are mostly using a extra safety strap on both sides that would "catch" the towpoint when it gets loose.

My Observation of stuck vehicle : self recovery attempt didn’t succeed despite shoveling and Rare diff lock , ( the ground sticky leveled , so essentially as if the 4 tires were at equal resistance but barely on ground ) . Just one question please : more deflation was done before or after shoveling ? ! observation of the recovery vehicle : utilized the gravity slope down to let “ winch “ and eventually recover . please @Sreejith Sreenivasan can you add these two to the thread :the greatest of recoveries . I put there already two that I Had the chance to witness my self. cheers 👍🚙🙏🏻

  42. DRIVE REPORT Murquab is a place of many surprises, some say they even heard ghosts whispering. I’d say we fought scorpions, crushed baby dunes, and towed behemoths 😉 We started off from the small settlement Murquab is, where it looks like time stood still and things just go their own way. The first landmark is the abandoned farm, where I normally take a left to enter the higher dunes. As i saw a herd of camels on that left side and didn’t want to scoop one up, I took a right turn to go around the farm. This altered my original track slightly and before we knew it we were in some seriously tricky baby dunes. @AnishS gave us a nice team work project, and the winch probably saved us 45mins of serious shoveling. A few others got some small refusals and the mighty F150 of @Melenany decided to take a rest on a crest, but excellent teamwork made it fun and rewarding. After dealing with that technical area I decided we had to pick up the pace a bit so we took some tracks that led us through easily and allowed us to rack up some miles. We headed into the playable dunes but as it was pitch dark by then our play time was running a bit short, and so we headed back to inflation point. All of you guys seriously impressed me today, not just with the driving but overall helping each other out and keeping the shovel nearby. A big thanks again to @Desert Dweller and @Foxtrot Oscar for the excellent recoveries and assistance, @Biju Abdul for the super sweeping, and @AnishS for the excellent second lead. @Dagdag Sofiane you’re really getting comfortable taking the Pajero through any terrain and you drove so well. Keep it up ! @Yousef Alimadadi as always with the smile and super attitude, always a pleasure to have you in the convoy ! @Islam Soliman taking your Yukon effortlessly through this kind of terrain says a lot about your skills, really well done ! the same goes for @Melenany that took the behemoth everywhere with hardly any struggles. @Nizam Deen took the Prado also without much effort through the dunes today. And @siddharth maheshwari brings white Jeep into its favorite terrain ! @Tamas Hoffmann you’re always paying attention, asking the right questions, and that signals someone who will grow fast. Well done ! @Mukundan Nair you and your Xterra did amazing today. You’ve impressed me every single time ! Rest assured we will be back in this terrain soon and will explore more areas to find more surprises 😉
