  1. THE JOY RIDE - Lahbab to Margham Relay Drive Report There are times that drives become a source of pure joy. Like yesterday. A thoroughly enjoyable itinerary, in a brand new area of Dubai, with a smooth beginning on long low yellow dines, and an exciting finish on a large, intricate bowl area of red sands. Joy was starting from Lahbab, through an entrance just past the truck resting area, moving in a south-westerly direction, to cross several low long range dunes, just as the sun was coming up the horizon. After a short technical briefing about dune crossing, joy was practicing what we had just preached, on a mixed terrain of low dunes and open sabkhas. This is an area visited only by locals, and joy was seeing them practicing the art of falconry, or making a living with camel farming. Joy was reaching some higher dunes, a bit tighter than the earlier ones, just after crossing an oil (or gas?) interred pipeline (through a fenced passage with the look of a mine field). Great joy was to hear Richard's voice crackling on the radio, just before seeing him come up from behind a dune, followed by the other half of the Relay convoy, for a meeting that took place at an unplanned location (we missed the original one due to the different timing of the two convoys). And finally, elating joy was riding the numerous bowls, lined up one after the other on the red sand pyramid dune facing Nazwa (and at the back of Margham), with the all encompassing view of Pink Rock and Big Red in the hazy distance. A perfect ride in a beautiful location, with a very well synced group of drivers. Thank you @Kalahari for the impeccable Second Lead and recovery support, as well as to @Nivin and @marks, respectively at Center Forward and Sweep, for their enthusiasm and efforts in managing the few refusals and stucks at the back of the convoy. Great job by new Fewbies @Hatim Patharia and @Mohamed Seidam: your graduation was well deserved. Many thanks to @Mehmet Volga, @Biju Abdul, @Nabil Bishara, @Shaaz Sha and @Tero Vallas for joining and making sure that the drive went well, also thanks to their poised and sure-footed driving in an only apparently easy area. At the end of the day, we had driven for 52 Km, in 4:01 hours, at an average speed of 13 Km/h (and 21 Km/h while moving), at altitudes ranging from 61 meters to 134 meters. Speaking of joy, please enjoy your week, looking forward to seeing you soon again on the sand.

  2. TRIP REPORT After the excellent Absolute Newbie drive, I was looking for a nice quick Newbie drive starting at the back side of Qudra. The idea was to hit the long range dunes before sunset and then drive along the smaller dunes under the guidance of our light. Almost everyone made it on time, and after a quick briefing we headed into the desert. How fast Dubai construction takes place is evident by the fact that the entry point which was accessible the previous Friday was blocked off and we had to find an alternative route to enter the desert. A strong mix of Newbies and Fewbies let me push the pace a bit in some of the medium range dunes and we all got plenty of opportunity to do side slopping. As night fall approached, it gave us an opportunity to have a drive under a different challenge. With the reduced visibility one needs to up their concentration to the highest level so as to keep a clear visual of what the car in front has done. The space between the cars needs to be reduced. Everyone did extremely well and followed the tracks properly. @Veedooshee was my second lead and though I was driving with her for the first time, I was mighty impressed on the communications and drive skills. Well done. A big thanks to @Ashok chaturvedi who had the responsibility of sweep and did it very well to ensure that all the cars were moving properly in front of him and to keep announcing on the radio the status of the convoy movement. Special word of mention to newly promoted @Desert Dweller for supporting the drive and who was more than willing to the drivers as and when needed. Well done everyone and look forward to seeing you next week.

  3. Ho @andy_macdxb I am reading this as a drive lead of another drive this weekend. It's probably not that well know/realized that we share some of these experiences of the drives together, but the double pop out story made it to 'dispatches' this week. Good that you got home, however slowly, and can look at what needs to be done to remove what ever it is that is rubbing against the wheels. Having just bought a Pajero and moved from the Jeep, it's clear there is a llot more 'stuff' in the wheel arch! I actually wanted to come back on the apology that you made that it took time to get your problem sorted. Why, because 10 days ago, we had a similar situation of a pop out taking around an hour of driving time from the drive. It's part of the game Andy. Carnity is more about the team work needed to get all the drivers into and out of the desert safely, than pushing aggressively to drive, drive, drive when we finally hit the sand. Everyone learns from sorting out this sort of stuck, because these new situations prepare us for the next time it might happen. If all we wanted an easy fast drive, we could just follow the standard tracks and routes and never deviate - and leave someone behind who delayed us. Hoping you get your Paj back on track soon and that we will get a chance to drive together once it's sorted.

  4. @andy_macdxb You donโ€™t need to feel sorry, itโ€™s part of the game and I guess that every single driver knows that this kind of bad luck could have happened to himself.

  5. Hey Friday drivers, a couple of things I must say. Firstly thanks to Emmanuel, Chaitanya and Islam for gettting Pajero back on track. They worked expertly as a team and listened to each other's suggestions with patience and consideration whilst remaining as "COVID-aware" as possible, not easy. Secondly, I thank all the other convoy drivers for their patience, I know how much of the drive time was eaten up by that recovery and having been there myself (to a lesser extent) I can sympathise. So huge thank you to the trio of recoverers and a big thanks and apologies to other drivers. Obviously, these things are never intended. Good news is the Paj is driving like a total wreck, you all probably got back to Dubai before me, because driving was limited to 40kph, and we'll see, but I think some time will be spent in a repair shop. It is a shame we didn't take any pics of the recovery as it would have highlighted the severity of the situation, but tbh nobody seemed in the mood for taking the time out, myself included. Onwards and upwards, strength and honour and hopefully your next drive is less impacted by a desert recovery. Also, thanks to Greg for loan of his spare comms, please note it was sanitised before return.

  6. Hello Desert riders. Drive starting with beautiful sunrise was awesome! Nice convoy management again @Ale Vallecchi and @Kalahari, thank you for your guidance ! It was different drive setup today in relay drive, great to see so many Desert riders in the middle of nowhere. I got stuck today on the edge of a pocket, but got good advises to get out of the situation. Rewarding..!! We had good amount of crest riding as well as side slopes, learning bunch of new tricks. See u again on sand !

  9. Hi @Ale Vallecchi and all other fellow riders, thank you all for such a wonderful experience . From the start the drive was fantastic and the sunrise view was a treat for eyes. Thank you @Ale Vallecchi for all those explanations and tactics to tackle the dunes. Though the drive had some refusals and couple of cars stuck, @Kalahari did great in recovery . In short I had a thrilling , superb and swotting drive and thanks everyone for it. Keep cool and happy ๐Ÿค

  10. @Emmanuel @Chaitanya D and all the drivers on todayโ€™s morning drive at Faya.. thanks for being there and hope you enjoyed the drive .. I know there was lots of waiting but part of the learning is to expect the unexpected and deal with it.. @andy_macdxb hope the damage to your front bumper is not significant and hope to see you soon on the sand.. Never leave a fellow Carnity behind, Great team work to handle double pop outs in a very tricky spot..

  11. Hi dear Desert wanderers The relay convoy is a unique arrangement and it was today @Ale Vallecchi / @Wrangeld as if both convoys trying find each other and meet somewhere midway. Despite maintaining physical distance but spirits always meet! Thank you @Ale Vallecchi you made our day despite the refusals and stucks we encountered. However itโ€™s considered the flavor of the game that we all love๐Ÿ˜Š Thank you for guiding me during crest riding and crossing safely. special thanks to the second lead @Kalahari for the instructions and help when I got stuck in a tricky narrow area ( I hope some one snapped it or recorded it )! Thank you all for this lovely day! below is a link enjoy please some pictures I will upload to Galary. short clips to some recoveries I could capture from my position In the thread the greatest of recoveries . till then take care and see you again in the sand . cheers ๐Ÿš™๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

  12. DRIVE REPORT "It's been a long time been a long time, been a long lonely lonely lonely lonely lonely time"...... Robert Plant, Led Zeppelin. My last Intermediate drive came from the time before Carnity exploded exponentially, and we use to have drives with 4-5 cars where we bumped the drive level up every 20 mins until the first one got stuck. This morning, a fresh convoy of about 9 cars was eager to hit the Bidayer area, and get a taste from the rockin and rollin this area has to offer. To avoid the crazy traffic at Bidayer shops, we deflated at the Big Adventure Tours roundabout and went in from there. These dunes are little bit technical and it was a great sight to see the sun coming up behind Big Red itself. We moved to the first pyramid area and all did their very best to get as far and as high as their vehicle could take them. The whole team did their utmost best and all proved their recent promotions. We kept moving from one play area to another, and were eventually halted by the first popout Brette encountered. The tyre lost its valve and had some damage on the inner edge so we had some difficulties getting it to pop in again. 2 more popouts followed the next hour but these were easier ones that were resolved within 10-15mins. We enjoyed the sunny morning, and only had to deal with a very few refusals that were easily dealt with, and the rope of @Foxtrot Oscar did its work as well. Big kudos to @Shiju Manuel for being a great second lead and communicating well to the other Pajeros behind him to make them aware of the bumps and pockets. @AnishS you did a fewbie plus drives and it showed, you drove with confidence and i hope Veedooshee enjoyed as well. @Yousef Alimadadi for your first intermediate drive as well, absolutely well done. Totally impressed as well with @Janarthan @Lorenzo Candelpergher, @Foxtrot Oscar and the Wrangler boys @Febin Frederic @Rinelle Sanaani @Jun Zamora @Brette also a thumbs up for assisting with the recoveries and keeping everyone moving. See you soon in the sands again !

Thanks to other leads @Kalahari @Nivin and @marks for their efforts in recoveries ensuring quick back to drive with full of joy. Also thanks to all other drivers for your good performances. See you on the next drive!

  14. Fewbie Drive with @Emmanuel at Faya: What I could see from the Center of the convoy It was great to see the members RSVPed for the drive arrive well in time at the starting point , which was slightly inside the tarmac. We started our drive right at the foot of tall Faya dune , which was studded with crosstracks probably from yesterdays โ€œdune bashersโ€ who had played quite a lot in the area and hence decided to climb from the side. All drivers made it to the top of Faya and we continued further crossing the dunes and bowls behind Faya. All was well until there was a twin pop out on one car in a very soft pocket of sand. In fact the sand was so soft , whatever sand we cleared by shovelling kept coming back making it a very tricky situation. Thanks to trip lead @Emmanuel and @Islam Soliman we fixed this twin pop out and once again we started again, alas but for a very short while . The car with pop out had a bent left front fender rubbing against the tire and hence had to be on tarmac for it to be taken safely for a repair. After returning to continue our drive we continued through the Faya tracks, crossing camel rock and entered the Fossil rock area. All members did their fair bit of much needed play climbing the dunes and coming down. As we were close to finishing time Emmanuel decided to exit the drive and we headed towards ADNOC on E102 (Sharjah-Kalba Road) @Gregory Perkin did his task as second lead with confidence communicating and following the suggestions from the lead. Thank you! @Luca Palanca Falsini managed his V6 Fortuner very well, except for one crest probably because still it was too early as we had just started the drive and was getting warmed up. @Islam Soliman managed his huge V8 GMC very well. Great to see how you are driving better with each drive, and yes a fantastic support for fixing the twin pop out. Thank you! @andy_macdxb was driving his Pajero well untill his drive was cut short and had to exit out as it was too risky to continue with something hard rubbing against his front tires. Steering is your friend when driving on sand and it is definitely not a good idea when the front tires are not freely moving. Hope you get your car fixed soon, not to forget get your tires cleaned and balanced. @Rajeevan Vickneswaran drove his Wrangler LWB well, climbing and riding the ridge perfectly. You have a great car which you can safely push as you progress further. @Ilya Golubinsky did not break a sweat with his Wrangler LWB as well, fantastic driving and always willing to try. @Heisem was hardly heard on the radio with his FJC which simply shows how well you drove. @Adam Marston did the job of sweep to perfection communicating well and making sure all the cars were moving in the convoy. Thank you! We appreciate all members who waited patiently while we fixed the pop out lasting almost close to an hour, effectively reducing the time we could spend riding on sand. But sometimes things are beyond our control and the idea was to have the car moving as soon as we could and exit out safely. Some Stats from the drive

Feels like got everything I could expect from a drive in the desert, technical dunes, super scenic nature views, ridge riding, up & down crossings, bowls, sabkha, overall a fun and adrenaline packed drive. 17. What an epic drive in technical dunes' hell!! Wicked idea by @Gaurav (apparently inspired by @Srikumar) to choose the Lisaili to Faqa drive headline as a bait ๐Ÿ˜‰ for a fun filled itinerary, while actually designing an excruciatingly difficult challenge for the last Leaders Lead session. Almost entirely focused on the super technical dunes between Lisaili and Murquab, this was one of the most difficult drive I had to do while with Carnity. My hats off to all the soon to be leaders for facing up to the challenge without batting an eye, always responding with a positive, energetic and calm attitude to the difficulties revealing themselves dune after dune after dune. @Chaitanya D, @Tbone, @Kalahari, @Brette and @sertac all displayed leaders' qualities, by driving with flair, control, unwavering determination and resilience, plus supporting each other when needed. I was also very impressed by everybody's calm and clear communication skills, even under quite a deal of pressure. I dare just giving them one advice: you can never plan enough, even the unplanned. I realize that nobody wishes to take a convoy in little fun, hard to navigate, technical areas, but on any drive one can find himself ending up in such an unplanned situation. This is why I suggest you always mark on your maps multiple exit points, especially in proximity to the technical areas. Take your time to look back at the maps, especially while driving through these areas, and at the same time take visuals of the surrounding terrain, so that anytime you find yourself in a tight spot, you may have one or more ways out, even though this may mean not reaching the planned exit point. As we said today, you cannot control all aspects of a drive while planning it at home, but you can do your best to be prepared, and minimize any risks you may encounter. Having said this, I congratulate all of you guys with today's achievements. You led in one of the most difficult terrains you may find in this area, and you came out successfully. Great job. See you soon with your new stripes on.

  18. @Lorenzo Candelpergher we can try it on the Sweihan drive. What time is better, just after sunrise or closer to 8 am. Will try to scout some nice dunes where we can try to shoot. With the well spaced out dunes of Sweihan we might get some good footage, Maybe then I can share with you the route and you can see if drones are allowed in those areas.

  20. Indeed it was a drive par excellence led by @Srikumar. I was highly privileged by getting to drive behind you as i also get to learn from the way you tackle the dunes. Your meticulousness, guidance and support throughout the drive is really great. I had loads of fun practicing the sideys and i really enjoyed the swiftness of the route (despite the technicalities) as you did set a very nice pace. I also enjoyed that portion of night driving yesterday as you still kept that pace and some technicalities. Pretty good job by the whole convoy..๐Ÿ‘ Special thanks goes to our CF @Desert Dweller and our sweep @Ashok chaturvedi.

  21. Brilliant post @Ajiesh George Kannankara - with some nice reminders of the drive. It was a pleasure to have you and your crew on hand and as mentioned in the main drive report your enthusiasm to help out where ever possible is really appreciated. The new Carnity leaders all start out as members that have as much interest in driving through the sand as getting deep into it to help out the team. When the drone work is ready, please let us know. I am looking forward to the next chance to drive together.

  23. TRIP REPORT The Absolute Newbie drives are always pretty exciting as you meet a lot of first time offroaders who are looking to taste the wilderness. Makes you remember your first drive in the desert which is a mix of nervousness and excitement. As I reached the deflation point most of the cars had already reached which is the first sign of positivity. After helping out a few with the deflation and going through an Absolute Newbie briefing, we made our way through some flat tracks. As the drivers started understanding some basic throttle and steering control, I slowly increased the level and started doing small U-turns and sideys on the medium range dunes of Qudra. @Nihal17 was my second lead and he did a very good job of keeping a clear communication and listening to my instructions from time to time.. Well done buddy. @Ranjan Das joined us with the LR Discovery, and though the shape has changed over the years, its still a capable beast with a lot of power and that showed in the manner in which he danced through the dunes and some of the cross tracks. @Arda Yagcioglu had a LR2, and though the car seems innocuous at times, the i6 engine gives it a lot of power to get through most of the places. Nicely done. @Mahmoud_Alhamed joined us with Pathfinder 2007 and I hardly heard anything on the radio which is an indication that he had a smooth sailing through all the dunes. We then had 3 Pajeros @manoj nair @Abhilash Nair and @Mohamed Abo ElKomsan who all drove very well, but unfortunately had the hot transmission light coming on from time to time. Please check the transmission fluid and get that changed as a first step. If already done recently, then have a couple of more drives and see if the problem is persisting. If it continues you might need to install a fan in front of the transmission cooler. @Haitham Hasan had the monster truck of the convoy, a Raptor 6.2 litre. This is one of the few trucks that has been built specifically for offroading, with a proper suspension setup and a beast of an engine. Having said that its a very long wheel base and can fishtail quite a bit, and thats where the learning has to to come. @Goutam and @Karthik Krishnakumar were the yellow Wrangler twins at the back of the convoy. Though initially hesitant on how much to push the car, they slowly started learning and towards the end of the drive one could see the increase in their confidence level. Finally, a big shout out to @Jeepie for supporting this drive and helping out at every stage of the drive, from the deflation to the recoveries. Much appreciate the support you had provided. Moving forward you all will be joining the Newbie drives and not an Absolute Newbie drive. Drives are announced every Sunday at 11 am, and they go live on Sunday at 7 pm. Due to the high demand, these drives get full in about 10 minutes, so please be online at 7 pm to book your spot. For the next drives, please bring along a deflator, pressure gauge, flag and radio as a minimum. Learn to deflate your tires and checking them precisely Learn to fix a flag on your car Learn to program and fully charge your radio Also like I mentioned during the debriefing, join the Carnity Whatsapp Drive Notification to get the latest updates on the drives, so that you can RSVP on time for the next weekend's drive. Please have a look at below topic which describes the tools needed for every level: Please have a look at below grading structure that explains various off-road levels: See you next weekend on the sand. Till then take care and drive safe.

  24. @Wrangeld I never thought it would be so much fun and experience under your guidance for my first drive as Fewbie. Let me thank you for pouring us with the guidance, motivation, self confidence and fun through all across the ride. It was really awesome. @Christian Andras & @Tamas Hoffmann you guys were simply superb through out the journey in terms of helping out every one in the team when needful. At one point I was thinking of hand carrying the shovel and rope at one point instead of reaching it all the time from the vehicle.๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚. Excellent team work on last drive..Thank you once again for all the members and waiting to drive with you soon.. Sharing some pictures of last drive. I will be posting the drone videos we took a bit later as it require some editing. @Tamas Hoffmann we got a superb click of your car which will also be posted later the day.

  27. Dear @Frederic, Area 53 is beautiful and today's drive was a very nice one due to the great weather conditions (still 27ยฐC at 8.30am), the beautiful early morning light and the inspiring landscape. We had a few stops due to pop-outs, (during one of which I was able to steal a few minutes of drone video footage) but other than that the drive was nice and smooth, even if in a couple of cases we had to reroute before reaching the top of the pyramids. I was really looking forward to making it to the top!! The new high profile tyres deflated at 10psi were fantastic to drive and the more I get used to them the more I am getting efficient in managing power and traction, with much less concerns for pop-outs. It feels like driving a totally different car than just 3 weeks ago.. Thanks for the lead @Frederic and @Shiju Manuel and kudos to the whole convoy, which - despite being a big one - managed quite well, especially considering we had many newly / recently promoted intermediates. @Foxtrot Oscar was everywhere helping those who had stucks or refusals toghether with @Brette at the back. Great drive, can't wait for the next one in Sweihan..

  32. Dear @Bhaskar, Thank your very much for your interesting contribution. I like very much the view on the emotional side of off-roading. As with @Gaurav's proposal this requires much more than drone shots, but I'd say the idea is worth much more than your two cents ๐Ÿ˜‚. Let's think about it. Dear @Srikumar, Yes pls share the route so I can check it against no-fly zones and GCAA regulations. Thanks.

  33. Hi @Gaurav, Yesterday I took advantage of a short break during a pop-out recovery at the Intermediate Drive in Area 53 with @Frederic to fly my drone a little. I stole a couple of nice shots, which I will share later, but with static parked cars, captured from some distance, they don't tell much, I must say. If we really want to have some great footage we will have to plan the shootings in advance and carve some dedicated time during the drive (or have specific drives just for the purpose of shooting), so that preparations are not rushed into and all shots are executed as per plan as much as possible, while the convoy performs real some real action. Can we plan for a test in one for the next drives? All in all, we should include a 10 mins break for preps and briefing, 15 mins shottings with convoy driving around and 5 mins wrapping up.

  38. To put it in simple steps 1. Use a 2 tonne (min) floor jack kept on a wooden plank as a base on sand, lift the car where pop out has happened. 2. Once the tyre is off the sand, we pull it back on to the rim sufficient enough the allow the air fill back into the tire through the valve after clearing the sand from inside the rim using water ( preferably a stream ) 3. Once the pressure builds up, the tyre pops back in. What happened in the morning today was a very tricky situation because we were on the top a soft sand dune, the car was stuck in a supersoft pocket and with very little area for us to put in a jack, clear the sand and pull the tire back. But , we could manage to get out of it thanks to @Emmanuel and fantastic support from @Islam Soliman too. Appreciate the whole convoy members who waited patiently ๐Ÿ™ for almost an hour. The tire with pop out needs cleaning on inside and balancing once you are on tarmac.

  41. RSVP IS NOW CLOSED For the guys and gals who have been intermediate for a while, you probably have done this terrain and know what to expect. The pyramids and long range dunes offer plenty of challenges, and fast pace driving will only be one of them. For the new intermediates who recently got promoted, get ready to push every little bit of power from the vehicle, make sure you are properly deflated, and better avoid taking sensitive passengers. The plan of course is to have lots of fun, but also to test and shift the limits of yourself and your vehicle a bit further. @Shiju Manuel will be my second lead, while @Desert Dweller will keep an eye out for assisting with refusals and recoveries, and @Brette will be our help at the back and keep the convoy moving at the appropriate distances. If all goes well we will try to make it to Iftar Bowl, but let's see how things go and keep things safe and sane. See you guys tomorrow !

How to comply Read the drive post before arriving at the meeting point, so that you know your convoy numbering and radio channel. Arrive at the meeting point and switch on your radio to the pre-set frequency of the drive. Stop your vehicle at least 10-20 meters away from each other. Deflate your tires, while wearing a mask, and then go back inside your car. All briefings will be done on the radio now, so pay full attention to a briefing for your own safety. After the briefing, fall in your convoy position just before the drive starts. While driving if you get stuck, announce on the radio and be inside your car at all times. Trip lead and/or support will guide you on the radio for self-recovery or tow-rope recovery. While there is a stuck or a refusal, everyone else supposed to be inside their car at all times. You can only take a bio-break during the drive, by requesting trip lead permission. Once the drive is over exit out to inflate by maintaining 10-20 meters distance from each other. While inflating, only the driver supposed to be out and with the face mask at all times. After the drive, you can talk on the radio for any feedback, suggestions or help you need.
