  2. Dear Desertnauts, let's finalize tomorrow's drive. As you may have noticed from my previous posts, it seems this itinerary has been quite successful, so we have decided to: open it up to 2 convoys reserving Convoy A (mine) for Newbies (as this drive was originally destined to) shifting all the Fewbies and above, who had signed up or waitlisted, to Convoy B, which will be led by @Yousef Alimadadi provide a bonus drive for all Fewbies and above who wish to join it, if time allows, once the itinerary reaches the planned exit point (usually we limit Newbies drive to max 3 hours, so it's preferable not to extend their drive beyond this time limit). With this in mind, the following will be CONVOY A, led by myself: @Alfred Alinazar in Second Lead @Paolo Pellegrini #3 @Naim Aoun #4 @Abdul Rafay-S #5 @shu yang #6 @Veedooshee anchoring the convoy at Center Forward @Jamil Abou Assali #8 @Joseph Sebastian #9 @Luc Khaldoun #10 @Ivan Pironi #11, while @Mukundan Nair will Sweep the convoy. This convoy will line up on the RIGHT of the tarmac road, just past the Murqaab Mosque, and will tune the radios to Carnity Channel #2 (446.031). This is one of the more challenging areas for Newbie drives, especially the part going through Lisaili, so be ready to be fully concentrated, patient with yourselves and other drivers, in case of likely refusals and stuck, and willing to raise your off-roading skills to a higher (yet safe and achievable) level. CONVOY B, led by @Yousef Alimadadi, on the other hand will be composed as follows: @varunmehndiratta in Second Lead @Pierre de Maigret #3 @Adhir Saxena #4 @Alain Canivet-Abikhalil at #5 @Tero Vallas at #6 @Kalahari will anchor the convoy at Center Forward @Ehab at #8 @PaoloMaraziti at #9 @Thomas Varghese at #10 @Goutam at #11, and @Vanessa8580 covering the Sweeping position. This second convoy should line up on the LEFT side of the tarmac road, past Murqaab Mosque. Please make sure you are lined up on the correct side of the road, with your convoy, to minimize confusion and wastes of time before departure. The radio channel for the second convoy will be Carnity Channel #4 (446.081). Yousef and I will be in contact on a different radio channel from the ones used by the convoys, so that we can update each other with any situations about the respective convoys. All Fewbies and above will surely love this drive, in one of the more versatile areas of Dubai, with plenty of challenges, as well as opportunities to enjoy beautiful views, and relax (at times). Both convoys are planning to exit at the so called "Three Tree" 's location, just before the junction between the dirt track running along Lisaili's pylons, and the tarmac road joining Qudra's Last Exit with Solar Park. LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING EVERYBODY, PUNCTUAL, AT 5:00 AM. Have a great end of the week.

  3. As we are preparing and looking forward to tomorrows' drive, let me start with the draft convoy setup: 1) Frederic - Pajero SWB Blue - Crew @Frederic 2) Mustafa - Pajero LWB - Fewbie+ @Mus_hus78 3) Anoop - Jeep Wrangler - Fewbie @Anoop Nair 4) Karthikeyan - Toyota Landcruiser - Fewbie @Karthikeyan Govindarajan 5) Zed - Toyota Landcruiser - Fewbie @Zed 6) Xavier - Nissan Xterra - Fewbie+ @Xavier Treasurer 7) Hasan - Toyota Landcruiser - Fewbie @Hasan Wahlan 8 ) Werno - Jeep Wrangler - Fewbie+ @Werno 9) Ruan - Jeep Wrangler - Fewbie @Ruan van den Heever 10) Farouq - Jeep Grand Cherokee - Fewbie @Farouq Owdeh 11) Asif - Nissan Xterra - Marshal - @Asif Hussain 12) Srikumar - Ancient XJ - Crew @Srikumar We will be using Channel 2 (446.03125 Mhz). @Anoop Nair @Werno as you are coming from Dubai, make sure you get the PCR results and the Al Hosn App that shows you have been tested in the last 48 hours. (it will indicate "PCR negative for 0 days, 1 day, or 2 days, based on when you got the result). 2 days validity is the maximum. The plan is to explore the area and stretch our legs a bit. Some of you are having quite some Fewbie or even Fewbie+ drives under their belt already, while others will be on their first Fewbie drive. Let's all look out for each other and help each other where needed. The emphasis is always on safety and having a great morning out. Please do a double-check on your vehicle as well (fluids, filters, battery) as this is a more remote area and we want to avoid having to recover vehicles over a long distance towards the road. I will have the fantastic support of @Asif Hussain who has done this area earlier this year. See you guys tomorrow morning at 04:30. I know it's early (especially for us Dubai folks) but we will make it totally worth it !

  5. after hearing scary messages back to back i have taken below mesures with regards to bank and card. 1. temporary blocked my debit cards. i dont withdraw money regularly and its very easy to block and unblock through mobile app. whenever needed i can quickly unblock withdraw and block it again. Card is fully secured when its temp blocked. 2. Temporary block all unused unused credit card. (i should cancel them ASAP) 3. I do all my purchase with only 1 credit card, and limit is kept just above my monthly expense budget. i use this as tool to control my monthly expenses as well not to overspend. 4. Transfer excess money or savings to a different bank account with maximum restriction to withdraw. I dont have a big bank balance to safeguard. πŸ€‘ πŸ€‘πŸ€‘ but though of sharing it here in case if its useful to someone.

  7. Welcome @Neil Jarman it's great to have a fellow driver with a 90's car. We are a rare breed. The YJ and that too with a manual transmission is an extremely capable offroader, so you will have loads of fun. Just be sure that with a manual transmission, you don't use a half clutch. You might get away without burning it on the road, but on the sand it can be unforgiving. On the sand, the clutch is either fully engaged or disengaged even if the engine keeps stalling. You will get used to it. And when instructed by the senior members in certain situations it would be better to put it in 4Lo to get the car out of the situation. That helps prevent the car stalling at low rpm. Good luck!!

  11. LAST UPDATE @shu yang, @Jamil Abou Assali, @Tero Vallas and @Ahab Shamaa, you are all IN the drive. Please re-confirm that you wish to join. At this point, given the great response to the drive, we will split the convoy in 2, with myself leading the Newbies, and @Yousef Alimadadi leading the Fewbies and above. I will soon get back to all with the final convoy split, and the responsibilities given to the Seniors in both convoys. We will all meet at the original meeting point, at Murqaab Mosque, and will leave together. We also plan to reach the same exit point, with both convoys. This will be at the so called "Three trees", at the junction between the dirt road from Lisaili, along the pylons, and the tarmac road from Qudra to Solar Park. From this point on, if time permits and both convoys reach around the same time (approx. 9:30am), I would like to offer a drive extension to all Fewbies and above, from this exit point onward to Bab al Shams via Qudra (for those who wish to continue). The latest details, and convoy order, by this evening. Have a great day!!

  19. Very important point mentioned by @Srikumar to not to use "Half-Clutch" in sand. To explain more, half-clutch on road seems more responsive, but on sand as you don't get the precise feel you tend to overdo and burn the clutch within 5 min of self recovery attempt. In such scenario you can using the manual gear (real advantage) to jerk the car and let it stall few times when you practice this and master. This is how exactly you can create a super awesome jerk for self recovery: Engage in LO gear Put gear on first With clutch fully pressed, rev up to 2k rpm in short burst (practice the burst). Now quickly release the clutch fully and press again. GOLDEN KEY: You should release the clutch fully, when rev drops from 2K to 1K RPM and before rev drops to 750 RPM press the clutch again and rev up to 2K to keep repeating this. This way clutch will be fully engaged always and cause small jerks forward or backward to create a path on which eventually you can drive it out after few minutes. Yes nearest fuel station is at Last Exit and 3 quarter of Pajero fuel tank will be sufficient for absolute newbie drive.

  23. With the tremendous increase in the number of COVID cases in the UAE, we all have to be responsible while off-roading. Failing to abide by any single precaution at any time during the drive, will result in an immediate ban from Carnity Off-road Club. ZERO TOLERANCE First offender - 1 Month Ban. Second offender - 3 Month Ban. Third offender - lifetime ban and report to authorities. COVID19 PRECAUTIONS 2.0 All Carnity off-road drives will be LIMITED to driving only: No Socializing and gathering allowed at any time. No break for taking photos, breakfast, smoking, etc. No exchanging of off-road or recovery gears. Wear a mask at all times, while outside your vehicle. For passengers restrictions, follow RTA or NCEMA guidelines. All passengers should be inside the car, at all times. Maintain a minimum of 2-meter social distance at all times. Sanitize your hands and recovery gear after use. PS1. If you and your passenger cannot sit inside your vehicle for 3-4 hours please DO NOT JOIN CARNITY DRIVES. PS2. A Member who has RSVP the drive is RESPONSIBLE and LIABLE for their passenger's compliance. PS3. The above precautions apply to everyone irrespective of their vaccination status or schedule. PS4. You can confidentially submit the photo of any offender by sending an email to [email protected]. How to comply Read the drive post before arriving at the meeting point, so that you know your convoy numbering and radio channel. Arrive at the meeting point and switch on your radio to the pre-set frequency of the drive. Stop your vehicle at least 10-20 meters away from each other. Deflate your tires, while wearing a mask, and then go back inside your car. All briefings will be done on the radio now, so pay full attention to a briefing for your own safety. After the briefing, fall in your convoy position just before the drive starts. While driving if you get stuck, announce on the radio and be inside your car at all times. Trip lead and/or support will guide you on the radio for self-recovery or tow-rope recovery. While there is a stuck or a refusal, everyone else supposed to be inside their car at all times. You can only take a bio-break during the drive, by requesting trip lead permission. Once the drive is over exit out to inflate by maintaining 10-20 meters distance from each other. While inflating, only the driver supposed to be out and with the face mask at all times. After the drive, you can talk on the radio for any feedback, suggestions or help you need.

I m removing myself from this drive for now. Will update the forum, if I am able to join the drive at the last minute. @Asif Hussain@Frederic@Srikumar

  25. UPDATE: If you are coming from Dubai we suggest to put this meeting point in your GPS: ADNOC Service Station | Al Khatam (975) 800 300 https://goo.gl/maps/YEXo1DLjHpWFqpet6 this will recalculate and ensure you are coming from the Left side (E11) It seems the right side (from Sweihan) takes us through a private compound road which cannot be used. @Werno @Anoop Nair THE ORIGINAL MEETING POINT REMAINS THE SAME: Desert Rose Safari Meeting Point https://goo.gl/maps/HeuxaRo8zKJvVKYG6

  28. Hi @Tero Vallas. Thanks for informing me. Since we have divided the convoy, making one only with Newbies, and the other Fewbie and above, I'd rather not change it around. Nonetheless, I understand your request, so I have thought of placing you in an easy and relaxing convoy position. You'll but quite upfront (cleaner tracks) and you will not have recovery or other responsibilities, so you can just enjoy the drive. Kalahari and @Vanessa8580, will be supporting the convoy, so it should be a smooth and enjoyable one. Let me know if this satisfies you. Thanks a lot.

Dear friends , hasan hamadeh @hasan hamadeh arjumand @arjumand Haris Javed @Haris Javed Clay Neddo @Clay Neddo sachin suvarna @sachin suvarna Simon Ducos @Simon Ducos Roy Armale @Roy Armale Marwan Haddad @Marwan Haddad Vikas Bhatia @Vikas Bhatia Neil Jarman @Neil Jarman Roy Dsouza @Roy Dsouza Lorenzo Candelpergher @Lorenzo Candelpergher Brette @Brette Please note the convoy list for tomorrows drive below. Ensure you have read and agreed to Covid precautions, if not no drive. Thanks to all those who have done it already. Please ensure you arrive well in time so that we seniors at Carnity - myself, @Lorenzo Candelpergher and @Brette will personally check all the mandatory requirements for your cars and then guide you all in deflation and getting your cars prepped for what will be a wonderful start to your desert adventures in a covid safemanner. Ensure you step out of your cars with masks and keep social distance. Welcome πŸ™ Please note some of you have nil, some little, some good and some excellent knowledge of offroading and hence considering a group/convoy we all have to get down to the level of the person driving with "nil" knowledge. Please be patient for a detailed discussion on safe practices, for recoveries and learning together. At Carnity it is always a team sport and we all - as much as we can - go in and out together. While we all are into this as a hobby , we are not certified mechanics and will advise you what to do the best of our knowledge- unbiased, in case if we have any situation which is beyond our control. It has happened very very rarely, so lets not really worry of that as of now. Bring your off - road gears - whatever you have in terms of deflator, flag, suction cups, radio , compressor, shovel and a Radio. The most important being compressor as the air compressor at Last exit is generally out of order or extremely super slow. I will be waiting exactly at the location shared - in a Black Xterra with hazard lights on, watch out for this old Car . Lorenzo with his Black Rubicon will be a bit further up into the dirt track from where we will actually have a briefing and start off the drive. We will use Chanel 1 for Radio coms My contact number in case if you need is 0529970964. See you all tomorrow

  35. Wrangler YJ are very good and reliable off-roader. If you have got it checked with off-road specialist garage then its absolutely fine to join this Absolute Newbie drive. In fact this AN drive is perfect as you wouldn't need to push car too much on AN but as you progress more you will be extracting every inch of HP from your YJ. Just keep a constant eye on heat gauge needle, if it move upward then switch off aircon and drive.

  37. Thanks @Niki @Thomas Varghese and @sertac for the quick help ! It's a Canon 3000, which came out in 1999 and luckily due to the fact it's a EOS model with EF mount, i can use my existing lenses which i have already: - 14mm f2.8 Samyang - 24-105mm f4 Canon L series with I.O.S - 50mm f1.8 Canon Nifty Fifty - 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 Canon Ultrasonic and a few others. I would mainly use the 50mm f1.8 due to its versatility and the fact i like the 50mm for candid photography. Secondly the 24-105mm L series Canon might be a good walkaround lens as well but is having a slower aperture. Thanks @sertac for the info on the analog group, i will definitely look into that, but want to practice a bit first with different types of films (ordered some Ilford HP5 Plus and Ilford Delta 3200 film today). As my main purpose is to shoot in low-light conditions in late evening, i will need to find out which film works best ( and get into the whole push-pull theory a bit). Thanks guys !
