  1. Dear Desertnauts a quick run-down of tomorrow's weekend opening drive. As the title informs, it'll take place all over Lisaili, starting from the camel track to Solar Park and back. The title also hints at a hopefully smooth ride, where, if all goes well, silence will be the noise we'll hear, like in a meditative state, rapt by the beauty of this area of desert. We are planning to keep the drive fast, and under 3 hours. The convoy order will be the following: @Ignacio Quindós in Second Lead @Stumpy Paj at #3 @Krishna R at #4 @Bjoern at #5 @Gok Krish at the Center position @Mahmoud Taha at #7 @Tareq Al Turq at #8 @Jona at #9 @Joseph Raju #10, and @munkybizness in Sweep. We'll pick the Carnity radio channel before leaving. Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow. Have a nice evening.

  2. Hi @PatrickI have been using Etisalat and have got a pretty good coverage everywhere, except in a few cases where you are hiking inbetween mountains (where no provider signal would reach anyway) and some large bowls in Liwa where the signal dropped. If you are asking this with regards to making phone calls i think Etisalat is fine. If this is related to using your 4G signal to access your mapping software such as Google Maps, GaiaGPS, or others, i would strongly recommend to install GaiaGPS and download the offline sattelite maps. That way you are always sure that you can navigate without having a mobile network (i use a phone with Gaiagps, without SIM card whenever i go offroad).

  3. I am using the Toby brand night lightbar from DM for a quarter of the price of branded names, the only drawback I can highlight is that light lumens intensities deplete pretty fast. You need to change every 2-3 years if you really want to see far. The bright side is that these cheaper brands bring hi-tech very fast, so my current version has 2 setups mixed in one, flood on the right and left (50-100-meter range) and a lazer spot in the center (400 - 500 meter range). This version spot is based on some new tech, so it really makes a laser-sharp rectangle on any dune, which I have never seen before. This was a little irritating in beginning, but when my eyes adapted to its functionality, I started liking it.

  7. I don’t recommend relying on network connection for maps and navigation specially if you are venturing on unfamiliar remote areas.. ensure you have offline maps downloaded and test it before stepping 🛞 on the sand For voice, all will fail at a point in time and you should rely on your off-roading skills and experience and teamwork.. the very reason we always advise against venturing solo or without the right experience, support team, and appropriate tools

  8. anecdotally my virgin reception seems to go back to 3G/voice only as soon as getting into the dunes. diff phones have deiffernet antenna designs/receiption as well.. so not as simple as 'which provider best'

  14. Will keep an eye on the temps, I have fitted an extra electric fan and installed a new hub fan, and will be upgrading the trans cooler shortly, I will bypass the transmission cooler In The radiator. I have also wrapped the headers and spaced the bonnet to help with temps at low speed. I was idling today for about 40 mins with a/c flat out and engine never got above 88deg. Before it would go above 98 very quick when idling. Intake temp was up to 75deg

  17. Yeah, very interesting to understand what i can get in terms of result. All i tried so far is just use it for 10 seconds when i am parking car in front of my house. Cats and birds are not happy at all ))

  18. Etisalat used to be the best one, but now all providers accessing Etisalat infrastructure more and more so they all are in a similar coverage spectrum. However in the remotest of locations, I have seen if you climb a dune or go across a mountain that is not obscure from all sides, you will have signals. I am using Etisalat for a long time and never had a signal issue after 5 min of effort in obscure locations.

  19. I recently switched from Virgin to Etisalat for this reason. i will never forget that @Mario Cornejoreceived MOI's calling in the middle of a bowl in al Quaa where my pathfinder shut down! Virgin is more cost effective, but the price for it is the poor and slow customer service.

  20. guys, a few suggestions would be to look into the following brands as they are good and not very expensive. Can be found on amazon as well. I am listing the good quality ones from least expensive to most expensive Nilight that comes with 2 years warranty and decent lights with good water proofing Hella Black Magic Rigid and Black Oak - There are some good ones for less than 1K AED as of now on Amazon. Hope this helps guys.

  21. If you have ever watched the movie Close encounters of the third kind , it’s like the end scene in your rear view mirror.. I remember my first night time drive and @Benjamin commenting that the car behind had strapped the sun to the front of car. 😀

  26. Thanks everyone for the amazing feedback! I'm with Etisalat at the moment and I guess I will stick with it (relatively new resident here). Will look at mapping apps too, at the moment I am just using offline maps on Google maps, but that is of course wildly inadequate as no offline satellite/topo type maps 😃

  27. Best value and performance I would go the Hella black magic, I have the 3.2 cubes and the 40’ light bar. Also have 3 6’ amber Hellas on the front. great performance and won’t fade after 3 months like the dragon mart specials there is also a new Australian brand called “Hard Korr” there is a dealer in Dubai. For 2.4km range they are awesome.

  29. I drive with these over 2 years and happy with them . But as I said for the purpose of this night drive even if it’s your first time drive at night , only the lead car Offroad lights are a must otherwise for all others not mandatory. Of course if you have them sure you can use them … will talk about it more at the meeting point inshallah . In the pict above .. you can spot 4 lights could be of a third encounter 👽

  30. Night lights is not compulsory for the drive. For a Newbie level, high beam lights would be enough.

  32. Brilliant idea … my Saturday is presently packed with some at home New Curtain and Cushion emergency (100 we have are falling short of our daily needs). If will be able to unearth the rarest of cushions in the world in time, will surely like to join as well. PS : whoever decides to camp at Razeen, beware, Michael Schofield and Lincoln might be planning their next escape in the area 😀

  33. Dear Friends, thank you for joining today's drive. We had perfect conditions to explore this Southern part of Sweihan. Nice weather, not yet too hot, empty sands (not a single car on our tracks), and a nice group of very capable drivers. The first portion was already known by most of us, the "classical" Sweihan with long rolling dunes, some sharp crests, and a few high climbs and long bowls. Everyone went through without a blink, following the steady pace, and by 9 am, we were already at the top of the Old Lady dune. A small break to enjoy the view, and we crossed to the other side of the track. The portion along Al Ain airport was new for me, and it was a beautiful discovery. with these high dunes and long ridges. Again, the convoy was remarkable, especially in the steep and winding climbs where a constant momentum was a must. One car stuck on top of OL dune, solved with a precise pull on a ridge from @Rajiv Sam, a few refusals, and a popout in the middle of a tricky climb, rapidly repaired with the tools of @Beide Worku, were the only occasions to stop, apart from enjoying the view and the desert. @Joji varghese, thank you for the 2nd Lead, @Rajiv Sam and @Ranjan Das, thank you for the support, CF and Sweep, @Ashutosh Garg, @Alexanderrr , great drive, making the most of you cars, @Gerrit Bus , sliding a bit from time to time, but you have to control the car, and the camera @Mohamad Anwer @Imteeaz a convoy without Patrols is not a serious convoy, good to have you, @Beide Worku amazing use and control of the F150. Thank you all for the company, and the nice chats along the breaks, a nice drive with a nice group of friends, no better way to start the weekend !
