  12. One of the most prominent changes is the reshaped front end. The dual-opening grille centered by the bow tie emblem has become a Chevrolet signature. The so-called three-dimensional headlamps up the handsome quotient by a notch and reminds one of the Mitsubishi Outlander. The rear end remains the same though. The rounded edges are a car-inspired design much like the Honda CRV and the bold wheel arches, optional 18” wheels (our test car had 17” wheels) and air-intake ports incorporated into the fenders offer a sporty stance. The front apron sits so low, the approach angles are anything but “SUV”. Even 4” curbs bother this one. Park with care. Integrated turn lamps in the side view mirrors seem common styling culture these days and the Captiva keeps it contemporary. INTERIOR STYLING The interior styling is rather insipid and come in a shade of vanilla regardless of what colour fabric or leather you choose. Besides the satin finish plastics popular in most American cars there is also a glossy black stripe that is placed across the dash. We love the fact that the instrument panel gauges are easy to read and all the buttons on the centre console are spaced and sized aptly. Seems like the basics of ergonomics is a big chapter in the Chevrolet’s design guide.Tester notes recall the odd clock casing which makes it difficult to read the time from some angles. ENGINE & PERFORMANCE Matches BMW's 3-litre for max. output and beats the Corvette for specific output! Impressive! Under the bonnet lies a 3.0-liter V6 Direct Injection with VVT that generates a 264bhp at 6950 rpm and a twisting force of 299.7 Nm at 5100 rpm. This matches BMW for their 3-litre engines and the specific output of 88bhp/litre is even more commendable beating its own stable mate the Corvette, 70bhp/litre. There has been a 15% horsepower increase, an 8% increase in engine torque and a 25% reduction of cold-start emissions. The claimed 198km/h top speed seems achievable under the right conditions considering its 264bhp output. The press release states a 0-100 km/h time of 8.6 seconds. In our test runs we only managed a 10.4 second run with 2 persons aboard. But 60km/h came in a swift 6.1 seconds, which means this is quick off the blocks and this will be no slouch in the city. The power deliver is generally smooth and refined and there is heaps of tugging power beyond 4000rpm. 2011 Chevrolet Captiva also available is the less exciting 2.4-liter VVT engine that spins to a slightly dizzy 6200 rpm to produce its peak power i.e. 169bhp, while torque figures are a lowly 216 Nm at 6200 rpm. The claimed 190 km/h would seem far fetched and 0-100 km/h time of 10.5 seconds is more like a sub 13 seconds range in reality. The LTZ model we drove featured the ITCC (Intelligent Torque Controlled Coupling) all-wheel-drive system. In most conditions, the front wheels propel the car However, if the electronic system feels the need to intervene, it will redistribute the torque between the front and rear axle, with up to 50% of the power going to the rear. The transfer of torque is not instantaneous and we observed some torque steer under hard acceleration. RIDE & HANDLING The ride quality is what you expect of this car; it is supple at most speeds. The trade off though is handling. There is noticeable body roll when going around corners, even the slow turns in parking lots the car seems to wallow. The steering however is light and accurate, making you ignore the sheer size of the car. COMFORT, FEATURES & PRACTICALITY We believe the selling point of the Captiva is the space it offers and flexibility associated with it. The test car came with third row seats capable of seating 5 adults and 2 kids in the rear. The third row and rear seats can be folded, flush with the floor of loading bay, generating a cargo volume of 2,012 litres. Numbers may seem intangible but this really is a lot of cargo space. Chevrolet have given due consideration for child safety and have fitted Isofix anchor points on the outer seats of the second row, to facilitate fitting of child seats. Under the useful sliding arm rest nestled are 2 cup holders with a deep compartment for all your storage needs. Third row good for kids. The Aux-in and Bluetooth connectivity are available with commands integrated on the steering wheel as optional on the LT and standard on LTZ. We synced our phones and managed to play in-phone audio in a matter of moments. Faster than few German super saloons we recently tested. SAFETY The Captiva comes with a full complement of 3 point seat belts. Safety systems include Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control System, Hydraulic Brake Assist, Hill Descent Control and Active Rollover Protection. All to keep you out of trouble. FUEL ECONOMY 2011 Chevrolet Captiva Claimed economy for the V6 model is 10.7 l/100km. In our time spent driving the Captiva, it returned a modest 12-13 l/100km. A reasonable figure considering this is a SUV of sizable dimensions. Fuel consumption for the 4-cylinder model on a combined cycle is a claimed 8.9 l/100km. PRICING & WARRANTY The Dubai based dealer for Chevrolet, Al Ghandi Auto have priced the 2.4-litre 4 cylinder LT model at Dhs. 83,000, while the 3.0-litre V6 LTZ gets a sticker price of Dhs. 116,000. Chevrolet warranties are currently the best in the business. The Lifetime warranty applies for 3 year / 100,000km limit, bumper to bumper. After which the warranty is retained for only the drivetrain i.e engine and transmission and A/C. Do note this is invalidated with the change of ownership. 15. Not wanting to get left outside in the cold without a red-hot muscle car, Chevy has jumped on the big-is-best-bandwagon and produced a remake of the legendary Camaro muscle car, much to the delight of car fans all over the world. Totally modern and refreshed, but still keeping much of its original bad attitude, the new car is a retro-masterpiece that is sure to sell well here in the Middle East where mighty V8 engines still rule the roost. Looks wise the Camaro is pure road-going brutality with bulges, curves and razor-sharp lines wherever you look all around its big and beautiful body – it’s about as environmentally friendly as a nuclear bomb and that’s exactly the way a muscle car should be. But don’t be too concerned about its environmental credentials; if you compare this car to a full-size SUV for fuel efficiency figures, it should come out on top… just about! But, you will be wreaking all that havoc with much more style that a big and wobbly SUV ever could, and the kids will love it when you pick them up in the car that recently starred in the Transformers smash hit movie. From the front, the Camaro is pure snarling aggression with its arrow-shaped face, hodded headlight eyes and deep and black air intake venting. There’s a massive power bulge stamped into the wide and long bonnet, hugely widened wheel arches both front and rear, heavily creased and curved side panels, the almost roof-chopped roofline and the short, stubby and stocky rear end. This is the perfect example of the kind of purely muscular looks that got the old muscle cars their moniker in the first place, and as remakes go, this one has got to be bang-on. The retro yet modern feel carries over into the interior with deep bucket seats up the front, and smaller rather impractical rear seats placed out back. This is two-door car after all and was designed to thrill the driver and only one other lucky passenger, and not to deliver a huge family and a huge haul of suitcases. Who really wants to sit in the back of a muscle car anyway? Surely the prime seats are up in the front where everyone can see you! Driving wise the Camaro will follow the old muscle car rules to a certain extent, as this is a big and heavy car. However, you can expect better cornering performance than the cars of old and certainly much much better braking performance. A straight-line drag race is where these cars look and go the best, generally preceeded by a big smoky burnout. There is of course the obligatory 6.2-litre V8 engine offered with this car – two, in fact, both badged SS. One, with an automatic gearbox, makes 402bhp while the six-speed manual version of the SS comes with a different 6.2 V8 that puts out 422bhp. There’s a more efficient V6-powered Camaro LT too. But only buy the V6 if you really really can’t afford the V8. Price (AED): 120,000 (LT), from 160,000 (SS) SOURCE: http://automiddleeast.com/2010-chevrolet-camaro/
  16. Sourced from General Motors’s Australian marque Holden, the Caprice is a full-size sedan that has been selling well in the Middle East. In 2009 Chevrolet introduced an updated Caprice with sharper styling, updated interior, new equipment and a new six-speed automatic transmission. The same 2009 model still packs a punch and continues for the 2010 year. Despite being a large car the Caprice is able to hide its bulk to some extent thanks to neatly executed crease lines, fender slits, flared wheel arches and a sporty fascia. The overall look is upmarket yet understated. The current Caprice line-up includes the LS, LTZ, SS and Royale, all sporting a meaty 360bhp, 6.0-litre V8 engine. A 3.6-litre V6 engine is also available as an option for the LS and LTZ. This engine produces a more modest 240bhp and comes only with a four-speed automatic transmission as against the six-speed automatic that is standard on the V8 models. The Caprice boasts of a spacious and well-equipped cabin. Legroom is generous both in the front and rear. The rear seatback angle is well suited for long journeys and the width of the car generates a lot of shoulder room as well. The big sedan also has a big boot capable of swallowing 530 litres of cargo. Equipment levels are good and even the base LS comes with projector headlamps, multifunction steering wheel, cruise control, automatic headlights, Blaupunkt CD/MP3 sound system and power front seats. The SS and Royale are fully loaded versions with many more gadgets. Standard safety kit includes dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and brake assist while side airbags and traction control feature on the SS and Royale variants. 17. The Captiva is a compact SUV sourced from GM’s Korean subsidiary GM Daewoo. Launched in the region in 2006, the Captiva’s conservative exterior has begun to look dated when compared to rivals like the Honda CR-V, Nissan X-Trail, Toyota RAV4 and Mitsubishi Outlander. However, because of the Captiva’s relatively generous proportions and high roofline there is good space on the inside. This Korean made compact SUV has the capability to seat up to seven adults with the optional third row. The cabin quality is good and the SUV has most modern conveniences one would expect from a vehicle in this segment. Offered in LS, LT and LTZ trim versions, equipment includes climate control, steering mounted audio controls, MP3/CD audio system, rear parking assist, electric driver seat adjust and 16 or 17-inch alloy wheels. While the LS and LT are powered by a 141bhp, 2.4-litre engine, a more powerful 223bhp, 3.2-litre V6 powers the LTZ (optional on LT). While all variants come with a standard five-speed automatic transmission, the LTZ features a manual shift mode too. The LTZ is also the only variant that comes with all-wheel drive; the LS and LT (AWD optional) being front-wheel drive. If the budget permits the LTZ is best value as it also includes a lot of standard kit that is optional on the LT. This includes hill descent control, cruise control, larger 17-inch alloy wheels, driver information system, climate control and a premium audio system. The standard safety kit is very basic and includes only dual front airbags with ABS. The LTZ however comes equipped with traction control, electronic stability program (ESP), ABS with brake assist and optional side curtain airbags. 18. The Corvette is an iconic American sports car that offers supercar styling and entertaining performance at a bargain price. In fact the Corvette has been known to compete neck and neck in terms of performance with exotic European sports cars costing up to four times its price. The two-seater rear wheel drive Corvette is available either in coupe or convertible body style. For the performance oriented the more powerful Corvette Z06 and the super car status Corvette ZR1 are also available. Even the standard Corvette packs a punch with a powerful 430bhp, 6.2-litre V8 engine mated to a six-speed, short throw manual gearbox, with launch control. A six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters is optional. While the Corvette has faced criticism in the past for its handling, the 2010 model features a host of improvements aimed to make the Corvette a nimble yet surefooted performer. A magnetic ride control suspension is available as an option and is claimed to improve ride with its multiple settings. The Z06 boasts a 7.0-litre V8 engine with 505bhp, a six-speed manual gearbox and a performance-enhancing equipment package. The range topping ZR1 houses a mighty supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine with 677bhp of power at its disposal. It also comes with lots of kit included in the ZR1 performance package such as magnetic ride control, larger Brembo brakes and sport tyres. Standard equipment on the Corvette includes xenon headlamps, sound system, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry with push-button starter, leather seats, power driver’s seat, cruise control, and 18-inch front and 19-inch rear alloy wheels. Safety kit includes traction control, ABS, dual front airbags and side airbags. A variety of options are also available for buyers to enhance the Corvette’s performance and comfort. 19. The Cruze is Chevrolet’s new compact sedan designed from the ground up. It is a crucial global model that is part of GM’s strategy of making modern, fuel-efficient cars that appeal to the youth as well as to the mature buyer. The Cruze was intended to replace the Optra, compared to which it offers more of in most areas including performance, comfort and prestige. Also, its reasonable price makes it good value and an attractive proposition in today’s uncertain economic times. The Cruze’s design is bold, dynamic and a clear departure from the bland styling of previous generation Chevrolets. The big split grille with the Chevy bow tie, sharp peeled back headlamps, sporty front bumper and aggressive crease lines give the Cruze its distinctive appeal. The interiors too are chic and modern, decked with premium grade materials. Legroom is generous both front and rear and the Cruze can seat five in modest comfort with their luggage stowed away in its 400-litre boot. The contemporary wraparound dashboard has a premium touch and feel to it while the seats are wide and supportive. The Cruze is powered by a 1.8-litre, 140bhp engine, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Available in three trim versions – LS, LT and LT Premium – the Cruze offers plenty of equipment to keep its occupants comfortable and safe. Standard features include power windows and locks, keyless entry, CD/MP3 audio system and dual front airbags. The top end LT Premium comes loaded with additional features like power sunroof, rear parking assist, climate control, cruise control, leather multifunction steering, start button, 17-inch alloy wheels, side airbags and ABS. 20. The Epica is another mid-size sedan from GM Daewoo’s stable. Built and sold in South Korea as the Daewoo Tosca, the sedan bears the familiar Chevy bow tie here in the Middle East. Launched in 2007 the Epica competes in a fierce market segment against formidable players including the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima. While the Chevy matches its Japanese rivals in terms of interior space and comfort it does not match up in crucial areas including exterior design, refinement, powertrain and equipment levels. Even the Epica’s interior appears old school when compared to its more modern rivals. Two trims, LS and LT are available, both powered by V6 engines but of different capacity. A 142bhp 2.0-litre motor powers the LS while a 2.5-litre unit with 157bhp does duty in the LT. It is unusual for such small capacity engines to feature six-cylinders especially when modern 1.8-litre four-cylinder units produce as much power as the 2.0-litre motor in the Epica. The 2010 Epica features a six-speed automatic transmission on the LT while the five-speed automatic continues on the LS. The six-speed transmission is said to be smoother and more fuel-efficient than the five-speed version. Even the LT comes with only basic equipment which includes 17-inch alloy wheels, power folding and auto dimming mirrors, premium CD/MP3 eight-speaker audio system, powered driver seat, dual front airbags and ABS. The Epica is positioned between the Cruze and the Malibu but appears dated when compared to both. SOURCE: http://automiddleeast.com/2010-chevrolet-epica/
  21. The Chevrolet Lumina is essentially a rebadged Holden Commodore, made by General Motors in Australia. Introduced back in 2007 the four-door Lumina still manages to look contemporary though it is not as striking as its arch rival, the Ford Taurus. However the Lumina’s lack of flamboyance is more than covered by its performance. It is also one of the few mid-size cars available with rear-wheel drive. Available in three variants – LTZ, S and SS – the Lumina offers buyers a choice between a V6 and a V8 engine. While the LTZ is aimed at the family car buyer the S and SS are sporty variants aimed at performance enthusiasts. The S and LTZ are powered by a 288bhp, 3.6-litre V6 motor that lends this generously proportioned sedan peppy performance. This motor is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with manual select. If it’s sheer performance one is seeking the Lumina SS is the one to go for. A 362bhp, 6.0-litre V8 mated to a six-speed manual transmission gives this family car sportscar like performance and tons of brawn. The SS has been recorded doing the 0 to 100kph sprint in under six seconds and is capable of a top whack of over 250kph. The S and SS feature sports suspension, body kit and rear spoiler while the SS gets exclusive quad exhausts, projector headlamps, sports taillights and larger 18-inch alloy wheels with wider rubber. The SS also comes with sports bucket seats clad in leather and Electronic Stability Program (ESP) to manage the extra power. Dual front airbags come as standard while additional side airbags feature on the LTZ and SS variants. SOURCE: http://automiddleeast.com/2010-chevrolet-lumina/
  22. The Malibu is Chevrolet’s primary contender in the mid-size family sedan market, where it competes with the likes of Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima. The seventh generation Malibu was launched in the US in 2008 but took a long time coming to the Middle East – the 2010 Malibu only arrived at showrooms here in October 2009. The front-wheel drive Malibu is one of the new generation Chevrolets and features sophisticated styling, modern technology and build quality unmatched by any other Chevy sedan except perhaps the new Cruze. An upright fascia is characterised by the split-grille with the Chevy badge placed on the horizontal strip. The dashboard features a twin-cowl design and is decked in two-tone soft feel plastic with wood trimming. The sedan offers adequate interior space to set five and has a big enough boot too. The 2010 Malibu is powered by a choice of two petrol engines; a 2.4-litre four-cylinder motor with 191bhp and a more powerful 3.6-litre V6 mill, which produces 278bhp. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control. The Malibu is available in three trim levels; 1LT, 2LT and LTZ. The 1LT comes only with a four-cylinder engine while the V6 motor is optional on the 2LT and standard with the LTZ. The top end LTZ comes loaded with features like 10-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels, heated power mirrors, dual chrome tipped exhaust pipes, premium audio system, power front seats and remote keyless entry and start. The basic safety kit is generous with six airbags and ABS as standard. The Malibu also boasts of a five-star NCAP crash test rating. SOURCE: http://automiddleeast.com/2010-chevrolet-malibu/
  23. Like the Spark and Aveo, the mid-size Optra is also a model derived from Korean firm GM Daewoo, based as it is on the Lacetti. Internationally, the new Chevrolet Cruze is the successor to the Optra but in the Middle East the latter is still available during 2010 and is pegged under the pricier Cruze. The Optra range spawns three body styles: a four-door sedan, five-door hatchback and a wagon out of which the sedan is the most popular in the region. The range has not been given a facelift since a long time and has thus begun to look dated in the face of more modern competition which crowds the mid-size car segment today. The hatchback version looks the hottest amongst the three body styles thanks to its swooping roofline and Sportback like hatch. The hatchback is also the lightest of the three versions and thus the fastest too. All Optra variants are powered by a 1.6-litre, 107bhp engine mated to either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. A bigger 1.8-litre engine with 120bhp power is also available on the top end LT model. Available in three trim levels – base, LS and LT – the Optra offers decent amount of comfort for its price. The top end LT comes loaded with power mirrors, fog lamps, 15-inch alloy wheels, CD audio system with steering mounted controls, keyless entry, dual stage front airbags and ABS. The Optra’s interiors are well furnished and offer adequate legroom both in the front and rear for average height adults. The 405-litre boot of the sedan is large enough to carry a weekend trip’s worth of cargo. SOURCE: http://automiddleeast.com/2010-chevrolet-optra/
  24. The Chevrolet Spark is a compact hatchback built that represents the entry-level model in Chevrolet’s line-up in the Middle East. It is aimed at those looking at a budget hatchback with only basic performance and comfort. A new second generation Spark, based on the funky Chevrolet Beat concept enters the Middle East market in 2010. The production version thankfully retains most of the design cues of the concept to gain a futuristic look. Interestingly the Beat concept was voted into production by 1.9 million internet voters. The aggressive fascia with its twin-port grille and massive headlamps make the new Spark appear bigger front the front than it actually is. The tall stance is retained to generate more interior space but the flared wheel arches do lend the car a mild muscular flavour. Hidden rear door handles mark another of Spark’s characteristic design elements. The new Spark is built on a completely new platform and is bigger than the outgoing model. Still offered in five-door hatchback form, it is powered by a base 66bhp, 1.0-litre engine. Though this engine would only give the new car basic performance it is claimed to be extremely fuel-efficient. The progressive design theme of the exterior is replicated on the inside. The cabin is more spacious and upmarket than the previous generation Spark. The instrument pod is designed like those of motorbikes and features digital display. The contemporary ‘dual cockpit’ dashboard feels well built with good quality plastics. Standard safety equipment on the new Spark includes dual front airbags and ABS. 25. The Suburban is the long wheelbase version of the full size Tahoe SUV. It is Chevrolet’s largest and longest running SUV and was first put into production back in 1935. The current generation Suburban received a major makeover in 2007, along with the Tahoe, and now features a more contemporary and clutter-free exterior and interior with more efficient powertrain options. The Suburban also shares its underpinnings with the long wheelbase Cadillac Escalade ESV. The big and burly SUV boasts seating for up to nine adults but is also available in six, seven and eight seat options. Like the Tahoe the Suburban is powered by a 5.3-litre V8 engine with 365bhp. However, realising the big SUV’s bulk, Chevrolet also offers a 403bhp 6.0-litre V8 as an option. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with four-wheel drive. Available in four trim versions – LS, LT1, LT2 and LTZ – the truck based SUV can handle a fair share of off-road driving, especially the LT2 variant which comes with the Z71 off-road package. This package includes off-road suspension, automatic locking rear differential, flared wheel arches, skid plate, high capacity air cleaner and unique dashboard and interior trim. The LTZ is the fully loaded variant featuring many amenities. It comes packed with equipment including tri-zone climate control, second row audio and climate controls, rear seat DVD entertainment system and a powered liftgate, as well as rear parking assist, remote starter and leather seats. The front seats are heated and cooled and boast power adjust, while a Bose audio system and 20-inch alloy wheels are also included. The Suburban’s primary asset is its cavernous interior, which can accommodate large families and lots of luggage. The Suburban is also known to have great towing capacity.
