how long dose it take to change the cylinder?

my changing the cylinder on vacation time was bad idea the garage took 2 weeks and it spoil everything. -
If i am having cylinder 2 faulty in my jazz dose it mean that they are going to open the entire engine? well thats what the mechanic said that it is a long job and will cost me a week to 10 days i will be without the car. Is it true?
