Infiniti’s first venture into the compact SUV sector with the EX35 has been rather successful. The EX35 was introduced in 2008 and has cemented itself as a sporting alternative to the like of the Nissan Murano. It uses the same basic platform as the bigger FX crossover SUV and G37 compact executive and essentially bridges the gap between Infiniti’s more sober sedan models and the aggressive FX SUV. With a 3.5-litre V6 providing power to all four wheels via a five-speed automatic gearbox, the EX is quite a sprightly car to drive around. The four-wheel drive system is intelligent and can shift power between the front and rear axles depending on the conditions under the tyres. In really extreme situations, it can send all the power to the rear wheels alone. Like all Infinitis, the EX majors on technology and one particular feature of note is the Around View system. By using small cameras that are places in the front and rear bumpers and n each of the side view mirrors, when selecting reverse a 360-degree view of the area surrounding the EX is displayed on the large colour screen in the centre of the dashboard. This makes parking manoeuvres as easy as they could ever possibly be – short of letting the car park itself, which it doesn’t yet do. The EX35 was also the first Infiniti to feature the company’s ultra-clever scratch shield self-healing paint, which removes any small surfaces scratches in the paintwork on its own.
