  1. It is a nice idea but the technology has been here for years. I use launch x431 pro version 3. It's basically where the Chinese got there hands on the software and copied it. I can do anything the dealer can do with the software. If you know what you're doing, it's fine. If you have to call china for tech support it's a laugh. They are software engineers, they copy and develop it to run on android but ask them anything about cars and they're lost. Ask them how to access fuel trim data and they'll tell you which menu to click. Ask them what the fuel trim data means and they go blank. Hopefully this means that more mechanics will have access to relevant information. The mechanics need to be trained though and that's the problem Its hard to find good information offline here. I went to Dubai mall yesterday looking to buy a good book on diagnostics. I found a few books on the basics of system operation but nothing on advanced diagnostics. All expensive too. 300 dhs for a book to tell you how an ignition switch works? UAE needs a mechanic school.
  2. I'm sure a lot of people will have had experiences where an independent garage has said they are unable to repair a car and it has to go to the main dealer. From 2018, all car manufacturers will have to make all specific diagnostic and repair tools available to independent repair shops. http://blog.caranddriver.com/automakers-agree-to-fix-your-car-anywhere-in-right-to-repair-pledge/ http://web.archive.org/web/20160227035540/http://articles.sae.org/11690/ This has been a long time coming and should have been done long ago as manufacturer software has been available on torrents for years.
  3. I agree with @shadow79 then. Time to take the box out and look at the clutch.
  4. Does the reverse light come on when you select reverse?

    TV boxes in UAE

I've just figured out how to get kodi on iPad without jailbreak. What are some good addons? Ideally, I want Motorsport, wrestling, music channels, movies. Live U.K. Tv would be an advantage
  6. It's not about media scoops, it's about actual proven and quantifiable figures and that's what these electric motors are producing. They consistently outperform combustion engines. Yes, the vehicles computer will cut the power at a certain point to save the battery. If the battery goes below a certain point it will be fubar. If the system is designed correctly, you will have full power until it cuts out. A reserve can be added at lower power but it can harm the battery. It running out of electricity is the same problem as running out of petrol, nothing new, just scary because people haven't experienced it before. The latest Tesla only runs at 75%ish percent to prolong battery life. In the recent hurricanes in USA, tesla remotely upped the power to give people longer battery life and distance to escape the hurricane.
  7. Electric motors produce power differently from a combustion engine. In a combustion engine, the torque builds up gradually, reaches a peak and tails off slightly. In an electric motor, you have instant 100% (almost) torque and horsepower as soon as the motor is rotating. This is why the teslas have insane 0-60 mph time, under 3 seconds, 2.6 or 2.7 you need to check yourself. Putting theory into it and using head over heart, electric off roaders do make sense. I am a die hard petrolhead but I'm slowly starting to come around to the idea of it. Adapt and survive. I still think this looks like the top gear electric car though, meccano and a few sheets of aluminum. They should have hired pininfarina or someone and at least made it look modern.
  8. I can't even imagine what a home made wheel spacer would be like. Your wheel bearing would rattle apart. If you're that miserable, just draw what you want on a bit of paper and give it to one of the Bengali machine shops. At least you'll have something useable.
  9. How to restore power to factory spec? Full factory spec rebuild. Waste of time if you ask me. If you're going to rebuild, throw some extra horses in there.
  10. I feel you bro. Just tighten it with a spanner and leave it alone, job done. You don't need a 1/2" bar on it. One of my pet hates used to be working on fords with the big sump bung thread but a tiny 13mm head. Many, many times I've had to chisel them out. Just to add, spin on oil filters also. The tool is for taking them off, not putting them on and swinging on the end of it. Bit of oil on the seal, hand tighten it, then an extra quarter turn.
  11. Ah @treks I wish it was simple as explaining it and people would get it
  12. You need to check the knuckle joints on the steering column for play. Then jack the car up and check the steering arms where whey join onto the rack and the track rod end where it connects to the hub. If these are ok, look at the upper and lower wishbone bushings and ball joints. Should take a mechanic 5-10 minutes.
  13. Watch some videos on YouTube. It's not so difficult but once you mix the resin you only have 10-15 minutes to work with it until it turns to jelly and starts to set. Less if it's hot. Once it starts to go like jelly you have to throw it. If you can work somewhere with ac it's better. You can buy the complete fiberglass kits cheap in most hardware shops. The fiberglass is like a cloth made of glass fibers. You cut it to shape, then sort of paint the resin into it with a brush. I'm working on a project with foam and filler at the today. Not difficult but you need patience and you may need to mix many small batches depending on temperature. If you can afford it, you can use carbon fiber but I'd recommend practicing with fiberglass first. Carbon fiber is too expensive to mess up.
  14. You can build it up with expanding foam then shave it off to the shape you want then cover it with sheets of fiberglass. It's easy but time consuming. If you make a mess you can pick the foam off and start again.
  15. If you're driving off road at night and need more light then they're useful. If you're using them on road, you don't need them and you're going to piss everyone off.
  16. If you want some rolling road time my friend has one and I can hook you up. You still didn't tell me what software you're using.....
  17. Speaking of CVT, one time I bought a DAF 55 for fun. Cheap car, cost me £50. Wierd transmission setup. It did the same speed backwards as it did forwards. Trust me, going backwards at 60mph is more scary than fun. Ill see if I can dig out some pics of it.
  18. Are you having issues with the gearbox at present? if not, maybe it's better to leave it alone. If it's not broken, don't fix it. If you need a contact for a transmission builder I can supply but first ask yourself if you need it.
  19. I am not Muslim but I wish you Eid Mubarak and good blessings upon you and your family.
  20. Is that the older version with the built in printer? The 431 version 3 I have works through Bluetooth on android tablet but printing is a pain without wifi connection. I love the software im using now but im looking for something more complete with a scope function that I can add an external probe to do things like relative compression testing.
  21. What diagnostic software are you all using? Currently, I'm using Launch X431 Pro, 3rd generation. Works on android via Bluetooth. It's basically a Chinese copy of the dealer software so anything the dealer can do, I can potentially do. Has a few issues though, like if you're working on a VW you need to know the channel number you want to adapt, there is no description. I love it though. If you know what to look for, you can find it.
  22. My personal opinion, you are all nuts. In my country, I was paying 65% tax on fuel, plus 20% vat on top of that. If you had a turbo car, that's 8 dirhams for a liter of super! Not to mention a packet of 20 cigarettes could cost you 50 dhs. You people don't know how blessed you are! But back to topic, everyone is pushing for electric cars now. How will that affect classic car owners? Will they get a bypass to keep classics alive?
