  1. 7 Car types you should know before buying a car A second step after the 3 Key factors for assigning next car budget; you should be finalizing the type of car you actually require based on the present functionality and your needs. For ex: a bigger family opts for 7 seats, a small family with kids will choose a car with 5 seats, a family with grown-up kids need a car with ample boot space for teenager sports equipment, just a married couple might like a two-door or convertible, etc. While deciding your next car league you also need to think a little down the line as if it should be still practical for the next few years before you sell or else you might regret your buy within a few months, so think beyond today rationally and not only emotionally and factor all the possibilities for the future. Below is a quick run-down of all the major 7 different types of Car categories that exists in today’s world from the cheapest to the most expensive types with a few known names of the car models to give you an idea: Subcompact Cars: Audi A1, Chevrolet Aveo, Sonic, Spark, Ford Fiesta, Honda City, Nissan Tiida, Peugeot 208, VW Polo etc. Compact Cars: Audi A3, Chevrolet Cruze, Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Mitsubishi Lancer, Nissan Sunny, Peugeot 308, Toyota Corolla, VW Golf. Mid-Size Cars: Chevrolet Epica, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Mazda 6, Mitsubishi Galant, Nissan Altima, Peugeot 508, Toyota Camry etc. Full-Size Cars: Audi A8, BMW 7-Series, Chevrolet Impala, Ford Taurus, Hyundai Genesis, Nissan Maxima, Toyota Avalon, VW Phaeton etc. Mini SUV / Compact Crossover: Audi Q3, BMW X3, Chevrolet Trax, Hyundai Santa Fe, Mazda CX-3, Nissan Juke, Peugeot 2008, Toyota Rav4, Volkswagen Tiguan etc. Mid-Size SUV / Crossover: Audi Q5, BMW X5, Chevrolet TrailBlazer, Ford Edge, Honda Pilot, Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota Prado, VW Touareg etc. Full-Size SUV: Audi Q7, BMW X6, Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Explorer, Mitsubishi Pajero, Nissan Patrol, Toyota Land Cruiser
  2. Just like any other sport or hobby, off road driving too has it's own etiquette's. Often times these are not spoken out loud or mentioned in public to not to embarrass anyone. If you like to continue off road driving, you should know these basic offroad driving etiquette's and follow them. Pay 100% undivided attention to the instructions: Whether it's in briefing or on radio communication while recovering, give your 100% attention and if you cannot due to some incoming call or passenger distraction, ask them to repeat. Most of the instructions are given so that you can drive safely. If you still live in the mobile world or loud music or radio volume turned down, you will miss out on critical safety instruction that can end up breaking your 4x4 or bones, seriously. Follow the instruction PRECISELY: From as simple as deflate to 12-14 PSI, drive in HI gear, engage to LO as soon as you get stuck. These instructions have been given to YOU for YOUR safety and enhancing your offroad driving experience. If you deflate to 22 PSI instead of 12, you will have endless refusals, stucks and A/T Transmission & Engine will soon overheat. If you don't engage on LO as soon as you get stuck, you will lose the most critical surface area in which LO gear could have saved the day, rather than toiling in HI gear for first few minutes and making the stuck even more worst for your car. Acknowledge the message: Always acknowledge the radio messages as the reliability of radio communication is highly questionable. Step out and help: When you are stuck and someone is helping you, it's a BASIC MANNER to step out of your car and help the Marshal or senior member who is helping you. You can help them clearing the sand, fixing the rope or inspect the stuck or plan of recovery. Sitting inside a stuck vehicle and waiting is the worst and most offending thing to do. If someone is helping you to check tire pressure, then step out and observe, how to delate to precise PSI. Disclaimer: In some 1% tricky angles or situation, if you have a doubt or difficulty to come out, ask the Marshal or senior member: If its safe for you to step out? Please don't assume and sit inside. Observe and learn: Every stuck and recovery has a lot to teach. Observe and learn from your stucks and discuss with Marshals how to not to get stuck again in a similar way. If you don't observe and learn you will end up doing the same mistakes over and over again. Learn Vs Serve: All the knowledge and experience are there to help you learn offroading and not just to serve you. So that as soon as you learn, you start practising it and become more capable offroader and be able to help others in the future.
  3. Having a refusal or getting completely stuck is something nobody should feel guilty about, since it's part of the off-roading game. It’s also an essential experience in your learning. Somehow, as long as you can understand what happened so you won’t repeat the same mistake over and over, it’s a must to improve. There are hundreds of reasons why you can get stuck. Some of them don’t directly depend on the driver (it can be related to an engine issue, the terrain, the climate, etc.), while others are just mistakes. Some of them are clear and obvious, others are more unpredictable and difficult to identify… As a big fan of @Rahimdad’s What Went Wrong ? thread, it came to my mind that we could simply adapt his brilliant idea by analyzing, not accidents, but stucks, and try to make together a list of all the possible reasons behind them. Please do share here your guesses, explanations... and videos. I’ll start easy, with one of my best stucks this year, which happened in Area 53 two weeks ago (I borrowed the footage from @Javier M). So... who can tell us why I got stuck here ? Stuck_1.mp4

  6. Yesterday @desertdude mentioned “Bu Jasim’s” in the “What Went Wrong” thread and I didn’t know what he meant. I was told that it was a reference to a 4x4 model, like Bu Shanab and Fatma Jumaa. Who knows other local or international nicknames for specific 4x4 or cars models ?
  7. @GauravSir i have found in couple of places in your above post, you have mentioned you need to have proper 4X4 and not SUV. Could you please elaborate more on that. Till date i thought or believed that their is no difference between SUV & 4x4. Advance apologies for asking such a basic question here. Just curious to upgrade my knowledge and educate myself on this particular topic. Disclaimer: Im not challenging or testing any of the member on their knowledge/skills. In fact i assume myself as uneducated/fresher on such topics.

  12. Hi all, I am looking for some advice on which make and model would suit for a family off roader and daily driver. My budget would be around 45k. I have done a minimal amount of off roading before and would be taking it fairly handy (ie not hardcore) because of two youngsters in the back and I don't want to wreck or wragg which ever car I go for. I have done a bit of looking and have come to the following conclusion: it needs to be a long wheel base with 4/5 doors, Japanese make, roof bars for a roof tent and have decent space for car seats and all the camping gear. FJ cruiser would be my ideal, but seems to be very expensive and models in my budget are in sh1t condition. Patrol and land cruiser seem to be over priced. And way too much for what I need. Pradro seem to be priced quite high for the year/milage I am interested in. Kinda the same with Fortuner. Nissan pathfinder and armada don't have diff locks, but are well priced and have all the bells and whistle. Xterra off road is capable but is to high priced for the quality of the interior. I also wonder about Nissans electronic 4x4 system. Land rover lr3 seems like good value but resale would be a nightmare and the air suspension is sketchy. I'm kinda pointing to a pajero lwb 3.8 at the moment as it has what's needed, diff locks, low range and loads of space. It's well priced and can fit all the family and extra gear. Please tell me there is something I have overlooked and there is a really cheap off-roader we'll within my budget.
  13. After an off-road trip I felt my Prado pulling slightly to the right. Of course I did hit by front bumper in the dunes so it appears to be one of the reasons. On approaching an ADNOC based tire repair outlet I was told without even checking teh alignment that it is better to take it to the "company" as they only do the electronic alignment for one axis. Any adivice on the matter and does anyone know of a good garage ( not the agency please) in Sharjah or Ajman area?
  14. @desertdude @Rahimdad @Gaurav Hello again, I browsed around google with no success. The question! what happens on switching to off road gear on road? Let's take the lc100 series as an example, there are 3 off road gears, one for standard road driving, one low and one high. I know the low one shouldn't be used on road because it provides low gear ratio and excessive fuel consumption. What happens on high compared to standard road driving. What if someone started using the high gear for everyday road driving? If you want me to be more specific let me know! Thanks!!
  15. I was browsing the YouTube for off-road videos and came across the following. It occurred to me that the driver is doing something WRONG. So why not use the carnity.com experts to comment on what was wrong in the approach, skill or the vehicle that made it " DOING IT WRONG". I am hoping this thread to be not just limited to this video but as an opportunity we can share at least a video a week to have feedback and experience learning from Carnity stars. Let's see.
