  1. Hi (again) As a new Toyota owner and new to using a 4x4 for its intended purpose, off-road, I need a little advice from my fellow Toyota Owners with regards service intervals. I am trained over the past 9 years to service my car annually (as I never previously hit the mileage milestone) and with a service pack never really read any documents as it was a matter of a reminder being sent on SMS and pick up the car a few days later. My car: FJC 2020 (registered October 31st this year) 4 year service contract Averaging 2k per month KMs so hitting service schedules much sooner than planned Added to this a reasonable % of this mileage is done off-road I know I need to call the dealership for a number of these asks below however their service departments isn’t exactly responsive so as I wait thought I would ask our community: Advice needed #1 according to the Owners Manual, if you are using the car regularly on dusty road then the service interval for a few items are adjusted (brought forward). ASK # 1 – Does a weekly desert drive qualify my driving/car as having ‘regular’ off road use? #2 above is a screen shot from the owners manual that details the items that need to be done earlier if using off road regularly ASK #2 – have any of you fellow Toyota owners with a service pack, bothered to use the included service for this maintenance? Would it be a waste of that service entitlement as I only get 7 (covering 4 years) ASK #2A – if you fellow service pack owners advise to keep the included services for the main milestones (every 10k KM) then do you simply go to an: Independent garage and have the filter and oil replaced + Prop Shaft greased and tightened OR do you pay the dealership tax and get that task done at the dealership to not risk any void warranty? OR just buy the Toytota official Oil filter and have the work done offsite/independent #3 and ASK#3 – any FJC owners able to advise me on any items to watch out for / have looked at as I now take the car weekly into the desert and it being only a few months old? I am following the guidance in the forum to check fluid levels prior and post drive (oil, coolant, power steering and brake) I have done 3K KM so far and the oil on the dip stick looks as good as new and the fluids haven’t shifted at all (good news I guess) Thank you in advance
  2. *This may be Toyota-specific, but the general rule may also apply to other vehicles... So in a recent major maintenance (timing belt, water pump, etc...), my mechanic got creative and fixed all the warning lights, like in Photo #1 (only seatbelt warning light on) And so I panicked cos I like it with the ABS + VSC OFF + VSC TRAC warning lights on, since this car is only for off-roading 😅 After reading some stuff online and checking the Toyota Repair Manual, I found out if the Wheel Sensor cable is disconnected, then ABS will not function, VSC Active Traction Control will not function and also VSC Skid Control will not function. After tracing from the manual diagram, I found the wheel sensor marked with Gray Connector in Photo #2. I used a Cable Tie to act as a cable holder so the cable does not fall off during offroad times, and after offroading, I usually plug the cable back cos I need those safety features (ABS & Skid Control) in the highway 😄 So once the Wheel Sensor cable is off, you will get all the warning lights like in Photo #3. This is an alternative method rather than plucking the fuses one-by-one for ABS and for VSC. One cable to turn them all off! Cheers, Z.
  3. Hi guys. I'm new to off roading and need some advice for you'll. I want to buy a 4X4 for some casual offroading especially in the desert. Definitely want to drive in the dunes on soft sand and want to have a vehicle that has good safety and has good technology to come out of being stuck. Safety is important as I'll be going with the family. My choices are as per follows: 1. Toyota Land Cruiser - 4L, V6 2. Toyota Land Cruiser - 4.6L, V8 3. Toyota Land Cruiser - 5.7L, V8 4. Nissan Patrol LE - 5.6L, V8 5. Nissan Safari/ super safari - 4.8L V6 ALL OF THE ABOVE ARE 2020 models may be even 2021 model. Please give me your professional advice. Will a V6 be enough or do I need a V8. I have also heard the toyotas come with crawl mode. What does Nissan have thats similar to that? Look forward to hearing back from you'll. Cheers Roy
  4. While viewing videos on Prado Diff-lock usage and during the subsequent discussion on Carnity forum, I came across a good video about the way traction control helps in off-road conditions and this may apply to all FJs , LCs and possibly other 4x4s. It appears that the TRC will activate even if kept Off in certain circumstances. https://youtu.be/XpY_QDM8Fqc
  5. Hi again my first and last trip as an absolute newbie is over! Couple of asks to this community to help ready for future drives 1. reducing the tire pressure for the ride, having a pop out (likely due to my clumsy maneuvering) and then the subsequent tire cleaned out, the Tire pressure monitoring sensor (TPMS) broke and I now have a permanent warning light on the dash (all 5 wheels are monitored so even if I switch out with the spare this error remains). ask: do I simply ignore the dash error or should I plan to remove the sensors and have regular valves installed? Would this enable deflation safely to a lower value (as no devices sitting inside the tire?) 2. ABS kept kicking in on the first drive ... it’s not a pleasant sound but didn’t limit my driving as I was on a beginner level. Ask - does the ABS kicking in have an impact on the car so I should arrange a kill switch to protect the brakes /mechanical side. Or can I just keep going at this beginner level as it’s just an inconvenience vs a longer term problem ps. Showcasing how basic my mechanical knowledge is ... the car included a skid plate so my previous post was not acted upon! Learnt this as the pop out was being fixed by hero @Ale Vallecchi and @Gaurav Thanks again community... niki
  6. Just thought I would share my story of using scrapped/ second hand parts. Last week my 2006 Camry with over 270k KM started jerking. At first I thought it was my choice of music! Upon diagnosis it turned out that one ignition coil was faulty. The closest mechanic to the place installed a new one for AED 235. Next morning my Camry was still out of beat! Was suggested by the one mechanic to get second hand ones from scrap. The scrap guy had hundreds and tried out at least 10 before identifying ones that were working. Took AED 50 each for 3. A week goes by fine and then slight jerking makes my kids leave the car in their work place. Had to drive it back from business bay to Ajman with slight jerks when starting to move. This time around I got better price from Samira Ajman AED 175 each and changed the three. Appears to have solved the issue. Car is humming and hope it wasn't any other issue. I am sure the experienced guys in the forum will find quite a lot of errors in my inexperienced ways but from now I will take advice prior to taking decision on second hand parts.
  7. I have never been a big fan of the Toyota Corolla. It always looked to me like it was designed by an accountant on a Sunday morning. Driving it was also never an exhilerating experience. It did what it had to do, and the cabin was well put together, but never gave a real welcoming feeling. That was also mostly due to the fact that most people here in UAE buy the basic models, which suits them well as company tradesman car, rental car, or simple reliable commuter car. And in that aspect the Corolla has been a huge success. The resale value of a well maintained Corolla with acceptable mileage has always been above average, and you can bet your sweet tooth on it that if you'd put one on Dubizzle in decent condition, that within 1 day it would be sold. Now, looking at the 2020 Corolla which is now available in both Hybrid and Petrol versions, the new model looks more sleek, modern, and is becoming more and more like a Junior Lexus, which is not a bad reference. The Hybrid, having a 1.8 litre engine on board accompanied by 16-Volt electric motors, is clocking in at 95,500 AED. Having 121Hp and 142Nm of Torque are not world shocking results, but with a fuel economy of 3.9 l/100 km we are looking at a damn fine commuter car. Petrolheads amongst us that want to stay true to the black fossil blood, will have the choice between either a 1.6 at 121hp / 154Nm, or 168hp / 200Nm for the 2.0 litre version. The base model will be available from 71,900 AED onwards, Transmissions are CVT, which are partly responsible for the excellent fuel economy numbers. There are as many haters as there are lovers of the CVT trannies. I'm not fond of them as they take away a lot of the driver's engagement in how the car revs and behaves, but for the Candy-Crush playing commuters it will hardly make any difference. Toyota being a company of no surprises does again what it does best: make a car that will sell, no questions asked. Competition has been strong the last couple of years, especially from the Koreans which boast more exciting designs and lower prices, but high resale value kept the Corolla in the top spot and that will likely not change soon.
