2010 Chevrolet Epica Review

The Epica is another mid-size sedan from GM Daewoo’s stable. Built and sold in South Korea as the Daewoo Tosca, the sedan bears the familiar Chevy bow tie here in the Middle East.

Launched in 2007 the Epica competes in a fierce market segment against formidable players including the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima.

While the Chevy matches its Japanese rivals in terms of interior space and comfort it does not match up in crucial areas including exterior design, refinement, powertrain and equipment levels. Even the Epica’s interior appears old school when compared to its more modern rivals.

Two trims, LS and LT are available, both powered by V6 engines but of different capacity. A 142bhp 2.0-litre motor powers the LS while a 2.5-litre unit with 157bhp does duty in the LT. It is unusual for such small capacity engines to feature six-cylinders especially when modern 1.8-litre four-cylinder units produce as much power as the 2.0-litre motor in the Epica.

The 2010 Epica features a six-speed automatic transmission on the LT while the five-speed automatic continues on the LS. The six-speed transmission is said to be smoother and more fuel-efficient than the five-speed version.

Even the LT comes with only basic equipment which includes 17-inch alloy wheels, power folding and auto dimming mirrors, premium CD/MP3 eight-speaker audio system, powered driver seat, dual front airbags and ABS. The Epica is positioned between the Cruze and the Malibu but appears dated when compared to both.
