2010 Chevrolet Camaro Review

Recommended Posts

Not wanting to get left outside in the cold without a red-hot muscle car, Chevy has jumped on the big-is-best-bandwagon and produced a remake of the legendary Camaro muscle car, much to the delight of car fans all over the world.

Totally modern and refreshed, but still keeping much of its original bad attitude, the new car is a retro-masterpiece that is sure to sell well here in the Middle East where mighty V8 engines still rule the roost.

Looks wise the Camaro is pure road-going brutality with bulges, curves and razor-sharp lines wherever you look all around its big and beautiful body – it’s about as environmentally friendly as a nuclear bomb and that’s exactly the way a muscle car should be.

But don’t be too concerned about its environmental credentials; if you compare this car to a full-size SUV for fuel efficiency figures, it should come out on top… just about! But, you will be wreaking all that havoc with much more style that a big and wobbly SUV ever could, and the kids will love it when you pick them up in the car that recently starred in the Transformers smash hit movie.

From the front, the Camaro is pure snarling aggression with its arrow-shaped face, hodded headlight eyes and deep and black air intake venting. There’s a massive power bulge stamped into the wide and long bonnet, hugely widened wheel arches both front and rear, heavily creased and curved side panels, the almost roof-chopped roofline and the short, stubby and stocky rear end.

This is the perfect example of the kind of purely muscular looks that got the old muscle cars their moniker in the first place, and as remakes go, this one has got to be bang-on.

The retro yet modern feel carries over into the interior with deep bucket seats up the front, and smaller rather impractical rear seats placed out back. This is two-door car after all and was designed to thrill the driver and only one other lucky passenger, and not to deliver a huge family and a huge haul of suitcases. Who really wants to sit in the back of a muscle car anyway? Surely the prime seats are up in the front where everyone can see you!

Driving wise the Camaro will follow the old muscle car rules to a certain extent, as this is a big and heavy car. However, you can expect better cornering performance than the cars of old and certainly much much better braking performance.

A straight-line drag race is where these cars look and go the best, generally preceeded by a big smoky burnout. There is of course the obligatory 6.2-litre V8 engine offered with this car – two, in fact, both badged SS. One, with an automatic gearbox, makes 402bhp while the six-speed manual version of the SS comes with a different 6.2 V8 that puts out 422bhp.

There’s a more efficient V6-powered Camaro LT too. But only buy the V6 if you really really can’t afford the V8.

Price (AED): 120,000 (LT), from 160,000 (SS)
