Abu Dhabi Residents Not Happy with the Paid Parking Zones

We have some bad news for the Abu Dhabi residents. The Department of Transport (DoT) has recently added new areas to the paid parking zones. Some of them include Al Bateen, Al Karama and Al Muroor. Sadly, all of these areas were previously free parking zones.

The new paid parking system called ‘Mawafiq’ will soon spread across all of Abu Dhabi and there will be no free parking zones. According to the Department of Transport, this paid parking system will help to tackle the issue of illegal parking and will help in reducing the traffic congestion in the city.

However, residents seem unhappy and have complained that this new system will eat up a significant portion of their monthly budget. Talking to Khaleej Times, Awad Mustafa living in Al Bateen mentioned that the paid parking system puts an extra financial burden on his family.

Another resident mentioned that she has to pay over Dh800 for the annual parking permit and that is definitely a lot of money.

Do you think the decision for the paid parking zone is for the betterment of the capital city or will it affect your monthly expenditure as well?

In a crowded and expensive city like Abu Dhabi this was the only way for the authorities to prevent shared accommodation which was widely prevelant. I stayed there from 2007 - 2010, and used to walk to office. You could park the cars on top of the footpath, or on the center of the road and get away with it. But with Mawaqif they ensured that people, because of parking issues, had to move away from the city, which also resulted in more cars on the road.

So not sure on how this paid parking improves the system without proper public transportation being put in place. But hey, the authorities know what's best
