Ticking/clicking noise - Mitsubishi common issue?

Recommended Posts

Sorry to hear about your experience and after spending 400 dhs, noise is still there.

I was thinking about your problem, this morning while getting my Pajero oil change at Mobil and thought your problem must have solved and that's why we didn't hear from you back - as that's what 90% people do - hit and run

@hAwX how did your lifter noise got sorted, please share your experience.

  1. Noise has been there since I bought it. It just seems more pronounced now, come to think of it.

Reading again, this raises a bit of suspicion that previous owner might know this is coming soon.

Anyways, Habtoor being a dealer should have answers to all Mitsubishi queries but unfortunately, my experience with them was very robotic and they specialize in scheduled service like machines doing their job. Little left or right leave their boyz scratching their head. It took me 3 visit and 4 specialized technicians at Habtoor with some internal wasta to get refer to sound technician and still in end left with an advise "Sir your car is old, please buy new Pajero".

Problem: Minor knocking, pinking and missing resulting in doof doof noise like a tractor.

Later on @Barry diagnosed of a bent exhaust valve changed it and fixed the car in 2-3 days times. Now he is no longer working as a mechanic, but still, help people in diagnosing out of goodwill.

@Gaurav I have the same reservations about "official" agencies here. You tell them something out of the ordinary (anything outside of oil change), they then give you a puzzled look as if your'e crazy...

Ok so I managed to take a video of the car during start-up and after 40mins.

During cold start-up, just your usual engine noise with high rpm (especially from 0:49 onwards). Bonus points if you spot the faulty fog light (ref: my other thread):

But 40 minutes and 45 kms later, the rattling party has ensued:

Sound is not heard while inside the car so that's a positive. But dropping off the car for valet in a snobby hotel would probably make heads turn (not in a good way though)...

I dug this old thread: https://carnity.com/topic/12804-tick-tick-noise-from-engine-bay-06-mercedes

It seems to be the same issue, albeit not as loud. Anybody remember if this was resolved?

Hi there...

When i bought the car i didn't notice it. The sound gradually started became noticeable after a normal oil change at fasttrack adnoc.

It was resolved temporarily by adding like 2 bottles of smallest sized liquimoly lifter additive and a very high viscosity engine oil (garage people told me we have to change oil to normal once the sound is gone and they chose their cheapest oil without telling me). I guess they chose 20w50 or something.. it must be there in the thread i don't correctly remember.  So i did 3 engine oil changes in less than 3000km and you must be well aware fully synthetic oil changes aren't cheap...

So it went away after 2 weeks of oil change. I changed the oil again to normal one i use after driving it for around 2000km.. after like a month the sound came back only noticeable when you hear it by giving 100% concentration with open bonnet otherwise it sounded totally stock. This was a problem when i was trying to sell the car.. eventually i found out my car wasn't originally 80k km but over 200k km cuz japan import 😂

So i stopped caring about.

About a month later the car got cancelled (wrecked and total loss) from someone who run a red light.

Many people told me it's an exhaust leak. But since it's my car and i can hear how it sounds, i was sure that wasn't the issue.

Well anyway to resolve that issue even after adding the lifter additive, i guess its a labour intensive job.

People from all the garages i visited told me sell the car because they can give any guarantee that the sound will go. (some of them were german specialists)

Hearing the sound for a little during cold starts are fine. It went away back to incognito after a second for me. I dont beileve the lifter additive worked , i guess it just went away with time.. but you can try it out though! no harm, After all its a lifter additive 😁🤙🏻 i hope it goes away in your case so there's a reason for me to believe it works

Thanks @hAwX for coming back with an update.

Sad to hear you lost your car in an accident, hope nothing serious happens to you.

Well, lifter usually becomes quite after engine oil gets hot and start circulating everywhere, but in this case its other way around.

When you hear that ticking noise after 30 minutes, give more accelartion and notice if that noise goes away at 2,000 - 3,000 rpm or does it increase? If it goes away could be oil / oil pump rel;ated issue if it doesnt go then it could be something big issue inside the engine of valve or tappet or rockers need replacement.

Thanks for the update @hAwX. I've already done the engine flush with Liqui Moly Engine Flush Plus and have put Liqui Moly Lifter Additive after oil change (although I only put 1). I'm just at 300-400kms / 3 days after oil change so there should still be hope since you realised 'results' only after driving 2000kms... :)

@nutbolt thanks, I will try and do as suggested. But how can I know if the ticking sound goes away while revving to 3000 rpm when the engine roar/noise will just drown them? Anyhow, will still try this later.

BTW, I found out that Habtoor will charge Dhs 525 just to check the car....

If it drown the noise means lifter running dry and at high rev comes the high pressure lubricating the lifter

If its not lifter, noise will increase more and will be obvious to notice even with engine noise

Thanks for the suggestion @shadow79, but isn't this counterproductive? In theory, the reason for the noise is due to lack of oil/lubrication that fails to reach the lifters. Having a thicker, heavier oil will just exacerbate the problem, wouldn't it?

Also, the sound itself is indeed bothering me but knowing that this is not normal and is a result of a mechanical issue somewhere is concerning.

I am not asking to replace oil with grease what I meant is put around 100 to 150 ml of stop smoke oil it's a thick gooe which will after starting the car be pumped up and will settle where there is more clearance to dampen the sound because you say it's just completed 100k and the lifters are singing then the last owner was really not interested in taking care of the car....
