2010 Audi R8 Review

Launched in 2006, the R8 is a thoroughbred sports car from Audi. Razor sharp looks, a mid-engine layout and quattro all wheel drive lend the R8 the right credentials to compete with the likes of Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini.

The R8 is actually derived from the Lamborghini Gallardo, which says a lot about the car’s pedigree.

For the 2010 model year Audi has given the R8 more muscle in the form of a high revving 525bhp V10 engine which joins the existing 420bhp V8 unit.

The V10 is actually a detuned version of the engine found in the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4. Nonetheless the V10-powered R8 can sprint from 0 to 100kph in less than four seconds and hit a top speed of 316kph. Buyers can opt for a six-speed manual gearbox or the R tronic automatic transmission with either engine option.

This sports car is known to be versatile and offers a good blend of performance and comfort. The R8 is a low slung sports car which requires some athletic ability to get into. The cabin layout, materials, fit and finish is top notch, at par with Audi standards. Luggage space is limited to only 100litres in the nose because of the mid-engine layout.

The V10 R8 comes with some subtle exterior changes from the smaller engine sibling such as wider side sills, gloss-black side-blades (which can be customized), oval exhaust pipes and a distinct set of gauges, gear shift knob and door handles.

The R8 does not come cheap and the base V8 model with manual transmission is priced at AED 425,000. Add another 100,000 if the R8 V10 with R tronic transmission is what you fancy. Audi will be adding a R8 Spyder soft-top convertible variant to the existing V8 and V10 coupe line-up in 2010.
