  11. Since its founding in 1902, Cadillac has represented American luxury at its finest, building world class automobiles including the Eldorado, Seville and, most recently, the CTS. Enthusiasts have been maintaining their Cadillacs for years in an effort to keep their cars running and looking great, while extending their lifespans.

    DIY Repairs

Regardless of Cadillac model, most weekend mechanics can handle any number of maintenance and repair tasks themselves. Regular maintenance means fewer repairs, but as cars age, so do the number and range of problems with them.

With the help of your model's repair manual, there are some important basic repairs you can handle yourself including the following:

Check engine light: When the check engine light flashes on, it doesn't automatically mean that your Cadillac is experiencing a problem. One or more trouble codes stored in your computer have been activated; start diagnosing the problem by reading the code. Your repair shop will charge you $80 or more as of 2009 to interpret that data for you, but you can purchase a code reader for about the same price and use it over and over again. Once you record the code with your reader, you can clear the engine on light by pressing the reader's "Erase" function. Check the companion code fault manual for what the code represents; plan your repair strategy accordingly.

Car won't start: You turn the ignition and nothing happens. Or, you turn the ignition and hear a clicking sound. Be prepared to check the following components to find the problem: car battery, battery wires, fuses, ignition and starter. Begin to eliminate possible problems by cleaning battery posts and removing corrosion, replacing frayed battery wires, swapping out blown fuses, and running a test of the starter motor and solenoid. Examine all electrical connections under the hood; conduct a fuel pump relay test and check the fuel filter. Replace defective parts.

The brakes squeal: Not all brake noise is an indication of a problem with your Cadillac, particularly if you have a newer, front wheel drive model such as the Cadillac DTS. Semi-metallic brake pads used on this car are louder than full metallic brakes used elsewhere. Check the brake pads, calibers and calipers. Replace defective parts; consider resurfacing the rotors.

Air conditioner blows warm air: Flush the unit with an approved chemical agent if you believe that the unit is clogged. You may also need to do the following: add refrigerant, check suction hoses, examine couplings for separation, check tube connections or replace the condenser. Replace defective parts.

  12. As auto identities go, the XLR is fresh, strong and assertive.

When designing the XLR roadster, Cadillac clearly had some rather bold intentions in mind. Built on the Corvette platform, there could have been every chance that the XLR might have turned out to be a watered-down, lukewarm version of the ‘vette, with none of the muscle car appeal and all-on-its-own-identity of the legendary sportscar.

Instead, Cadillac have taken the Corvette platform in an entirely different direction, indeed making it all their own with strong brand and design identities from every angle – there is no mistaking the Cadillac XLR.

There is the classic roadster style to enjoy, but delivered in an entirely modern package that fits well into the cutting-edge feel of 2009, and beyond. The wide and clean front end, completely dominated by that stately chrome and mesh front grille and inverted ‘stretched square’ headlights, can only be described as showing-off powerful intentions.

2009 Cadillac XLR-VThe vast and bulging bonnet flows back into the steeply raked windscreen, and apart from those heavily flared wheel arches, the rest of the car is sharp, slab-sided and solid looking. This is the ultra-modern Cadillac design of today.

In keeping with the current technological fashions, the XLR features a hard, retractable roof, which disappears into the trunk in around 30-seconds should the sun pop out. Unfortunately, over half of your trunk luggage capacity will also disappear in that quick 30-seconds; these fashionable metallic roofs taking up much more space and weight than the old fabric equivalent.

But, practicality is not an important byword of open-top motoring; speed, style and seduction all are, and the XLR most certainly delivers on these counts. The interior has that opulent, if slightly tacky, American look and feel to it, but rest assured, the XLR is fully loaded with luxury leather, polished wood and electric gizmos, and will cruise you along with the absolute minimum of fuss and stress. Put your foot down, however, and there is still some fast fun to be had.

2009 Cadillac XLR-V Powered by a 4.6-litre, V8 petrol engine, the XLR has the power and torque it needs for things to get interesting; 320hp and 459Nm of torque, to be precise. That true American roadster experience can only truly be enjoyed when it’s powered by a large capacity V8, and there is enough grunt and speed pulsing through the five-speed automatic gearbox to ruffle even the most stubborn of hairstyles.

Coupled with Cadillac’s Magnetic Ride Control, which actively adjusts the suspension damping rate to suit the road surface and driving style, with the StabiliTrak stability system gathering the car up should you attack a bend with a little too much gusto, ensures the XLR is a fun, but not threatening car to drive everyday.

2009 Cadillac XLR-V Cadillac have successfully pulled-off a roadster that is both tough and go getting, but also suave and sophisticated, depending on the mood that takes you.

  13. The STS was introduced to Cadillac’s range in 2004, as a successor to the Seville. It sits just above the CTS and below the larger DTS – think of it as a more premium CTS.

In fact, in this region it’s considerably more premium than the CTS, because only the ultra-quick STS-V is on sale here.

It’s designed to take on the likes of BMW’s M5 and Audi’s RS6, so that ultra-quickness comes from a supercharged 4.4-litre V8 engine that puts out a not-inconsiderable 469bhp and a whopping 595nm of torque. Serious power then, put down on the road through the rear wheels by way of a six-speed automatic gearbox.

Cadillac’s aren’t just about performance though, they’re about comfort and luxury. Accordingly, the STS-V is well specced-out.

2009 Cadillac STS-VOn the outside, it boasts traditional Cadillac looks – the vertical rear lights and a big, wide grille with wire mesh within, a trademark of V-Series cars. The bonnet is made of lightweight fibreglass and boasts a hump on it to accommodate the supercharger beneath. It comes as standard on 18-inch alloys wheels at the front and 19s at the back, with front fog lights, automatic windscreen wipers and a sunroof.

Inside, the STS-V packs pretty much everything you’d expect on a modern luxury car. Cruise control and satellite navigation are standard, as is a 15-speaker sound system with 5.1 surround sound. The leather seats can be heated in both the front and the back and there’s a seat ventilation option for the driver and front seat passenger. The front seats can also be adjusted electrically. The cockpit can be specified with both wood and aluminium inserts, and access is via a keyless entry system.

2009 Cadillac STS-VOn the safety side of things, there is a plethora of airbags, including front, seat and side curtain numbers for the front occupants. Traction control and electronic stability control are also included as standard.

For a bit of extra money, you can upgrade the braking system if you really plan to thrash the STS-V about.

The STS-V is a luxurious machine, with plenty of power. However, it’s now coming to the end of its life and is due to be discontinued in 2010.

It’s not really on a par with the finesse and technology found in the high-powered rivals from Europe, and with the new, more powerful Cadillac CTS-V having just gone on sale, there might be some that wonder why they’d want the older STS instead.

  14. The SRX is Cadillac’s mid-size crossover SUV and entered its second generation in the 2010 model year.

The SRX now bears the new Cadillac family look, accentuated by its arrowshot design, vertically stacked headlights and the trapezoidal chrome grille.

The 2010 SRX’s aggressive and dynamic appearance sets it apart from rivals such as the Chevrolet Equinox, Lexus RX, Infiniti FX and Audi Q5.

In the Middle East the 2010 SRX is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 engine producing 285bhp and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel drive. Some drivers may miss the availability of paddle shifters behind the steering.

The new SRX is built on a new stiffer chassis, which lends it with a responsive yet comfortable ride. Available in two trim versions, Base and Luxury, the five-seater SRX packs in a top-flight interior dotted with lots of equipment. The standard kit list includes a Bose eight-speaker sound system, Bluetooth, dual-zone climate control, power windows, remote locking, heated power front seats and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The Luxury trim adds on a lot more equipment including adaptive xenon headlights with washer, front and rear parking assist, high end Bose sound system with integrated navigation, ambient lighting, cruise control, rear-view camera, smart key with remote start, power liftgate, sunroof and ventilated front seats.

The Luxury trim also comes with larger 20-inch wheels and a sports suspension for a more spirited drive. The safety kit is identical on either trim versions and includes dual front airbags, side airbags and curtain airbags along with ABS and Electronic Stability Control.

  15. The Escalade was Cadillac’s first major entry into the SUV segment.

The full-size SUV is also considered the world’s first luxury SUV that came with features never before seen in the segment. This made it popular with American movie stars, rap stars and sports personalities, which in turn spurred sales in its home market. The Middle East’s love for large SUVs has favoured the Escalade, which continues to do well in the region.

The cavernous Escalade is also available in a stretched version dubbed the ESV as well as a four-door pick up called the EXT. For the 2010 model year two new trims, Luxury and Premium, have been introduced to fill the big gap between the base and top-end Platinum version. All versions are powered by a 441bhp, 6.2-litre V8 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Buyers can choose from rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, except in the case of Escalade EXT pickup, which comes only with all-wheel drive. The Escalade also features magnetic ride control suspension, which affords a smoother ride.

The Escalade comes very well equipped. Standard features include tri-zone climate control, cruise control, leather upholstery, power front seats and remote start, as well as a Bose sound system, power liftgate and a navigation system. The Platinum packs on a DVD entertainment system, power sunroof, rearview camera, cooled front seats, upgraded leather upholstery and power-retractable running boards.

For the 2010 model year Cadillac has equipped the Escalade’s engine with fuel-saving cylinder-deactivation technology as well as new front side-impact airbags, a redesigned door structure for better occupant protection. Some features have been discontinued however, including the rain-sensing wipers and the rear indicator lights for the rear park assist system.

  16. The DTS was introduced in 2006 and is Cadillac’s full-size flagship sedan.

It is in fact the largest sedan in General Motor’s stable and stakes its claim to fame for its role as the US President’s official limousine.

As a part of Cadillac’s product reshuffle the next generation DTS will be merged with the STS to develop a new flagship sedan for the brand. This could happen as early as 2011. The model on sale in 2010 is unchanged from the 2009 model.

The DTS is available in three variants: Standard, Platinum and Limousine. Despite its name, the Limousine has the exact same dimensions and interior space as the other versions. The standard DTS is powered by a voluminous 4.4-litre V8 engine but it only produces 275bhp.

The other two variants get a revised version of the same engine with 292bhp on tap. That’s not a great deal of power especially considering the DTS’ near-two-tonne weight. The DTS comes with a four-wheel automatic transmission that drives the front wheels, a unique feature for a car in this segment and of this size.

The DTS was built for comfort and that’s something it delivers in heaps. The expansive interiors are both comfortable and well equipped. The ride is known to be soft and absorbent, best enjoyed while seated on the sofa like back seat.

Standard equipment on the DTS includes xenon headlamps, remote start, leather steering and upholstery both of which has heating, 8-speaker Bose sound system, tri-zone climate control and power front seats. Safety kit includes six standard airbags, ABS, traction control, adaptive cruise control and rear parking sensors.

  17. The CTS is a mid-size sedan that has proved to be one of the best selling models for Cadillac, especially since the second generation was introduced in 2008.

It competes with the German mid-size sedan contingent including the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the Audi A4. Unlike the suave design of the German competitors the CTS wears a more aggressive and flamboyant silhouette designed to appeal to the young and the young at heart.

The CTS is available with a choice of three engines and in rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. The base model carries a 234bhp, 2.8-litre V6 engine that powers the rear wheels. The next variant comes with a 278bhp, 3.6-litre V6 motor and all-wheel drive. A newer and more fuel-efficient direct injection 3.6-litre V6 motor producing 323bhp is also available on the higher end CTS. This version can be ordered with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

For the 2010 model year, Cadillac has introduced a new 3.0-litre V6 with 270bhp, which is expected to replace the ageing 278bhp 3.6 litre V6 engine.

For performance fans, Cadillac launched the CTS-V in 2009. This version combines sports car performance with luxury car comfort but comes at a hefty price. The 2010 CTS-V is powered by a 556bhp, 6.2-litre V8 engine, is rear-wheel drive and capable doing 0 to 100kph in just 3.9 seconds.

It comes with a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmission and features performance components like Brembo brakes, magnetic ride control suspension, Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tyres along with many sporty interior and exterior modifications. A two-door coupe version of the CTS and CTS-V is expected to go on sale during the later part of 2010 as well.
