  1. Hi, depends a bit where doc brings us. In general it shouldn't be a problem as long as there is a safe step out at a certain point so that you can safely drive back on your onw. @doc?
  2. The admin of the group created an own category now for any planned trips. By moving the post into that category, it accidentally got deleted. I just created a new one in the category Fun Drives. Please check if everyone is on the list.
  3. Here is the Facebook link: https://www.facebook.com/events/116694091780653/ 1. Doc 2. VCO 3. Walther 75 4. Khalil (50%) 5. ..... 6. ..... 7. ..... 8. ..... 9. ..... 10. .....
  4. Doc will be leading a Land Rover only off road mountain drive and camp Starting Dec 23 and back soon after lunch on the 24th, it will be a fun and sometimes challenging 5-6 hours of wadi driving on day 1 and a couple of hours on day 2, so who’s in? The drive is possible in a standard LR3 as tested a couple of weeks ago. Oman Insurance will be required (can be purchased on the dayfor @150dhs) ID or passport also required as drive will be just inside Oman (no Visas required). When: Starting 23rd of December 12:30 Mirdiff, back on 24th after lunch What to bring: Bring camping gear, warm cloth for the night, food and enough water for the morning, fire wood. Your car should be in a good condition and equipped with the usual recovery gear. Please spread the word, it's going to be a great drive! Share it on Facebook with other Land Rover or Range Rover drivers.
  5. That depends a bit I think. The stable jacking points might be under the car, which is not always the sill itself. But I don't know Discos that well. That should be at the end the point of decision for a hi lift or an air jack.
  6. I am using a hi-lift, but it depends on the structure of the car. If you have solid metal bumpers, it's fine. If there is plastic all around, it's pretty much useless. A friend uses the Airjack and is happy with it, I believe the hi-lift is more versatile. Agreeing with doc...once you know how to use it right. Otherwise it can break a lot, and not only the car. In my oppinion the hi-lift is more reliable in rough situations and almost all conditions. Saying that, it needs to be stored in or outside the car in a proper way or it can be dangerous during any kind of accident for everyone inside or around. Fixed mine at the Defender rear bumper, greasing it here and then and it's quite safe there.
  7. Should we open a more visible extra thread or topic and starting to count? I am definitely in! Doc, nice idea. Really looking forward to the mountains, overnight stay is great, can be nicely combined with a good bbq and fireplace, ending an exiting driving day. @VCO: I have a spare tent, in case you need one to test? Otherwise they are quite cheap to buy.
  8. Hmmm, I don't like to be complicated... I would be in for that one. 23rd and back 24th lunch time. Now we have to collect a nice group. Doc, already any idea where to go?
  9. VCO, are you off at the 1st? The weekends 23rd and 30th I plan to be off and using that days for campsites already.
  10. Finally you lift the secret Doc! True Now we are talking.
  11. Perfect Doc! Time is running quite fast now before end of the year. We could do a new years drive at the 1st of Jan? I would be in for both, desert or mountains, preferring the mountains though.
  12. Rangie is still allowed Sounds good. Maybe they want to jump in?
  13. Hi, Does anyone know a good company for powder coating? Need to get some parts re-done. Thanks for any advice.
  14. He likes his name...so do his fingers. All clear then. And still, a joint drive earlier than that would be nice. Any experienced driver/marshal around? I drive almost every weekend, but not a real good route finder I have to admit.
  15. If we talk about the same one, it's Jan 20th! Otherwise the one in January would no longer be the first one...
  16. Thats the one: https://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/ev ... 423603653/
  17. I think it's January the 20th, will join that one. Will be in the afternoon at the Palladium. Maybe we all manage to meet even earlier for a drive? I will join this weekend the Dubai Offroaders, easy drive. Already proofed that Land Rovers don't get stuck where Land Cruisers do
  18. We can always group up for a drive from e.g. Big Red to Fossil Rock and having a bbq over there one of this weekends. Why waiting and joining others?
  19. Sure! We can easily organzie a Landie only trip at any time. Signed in for Emarat 4x4 already and will have a look later whats happening soon.
  20. Cool, will check! I drive with the Dubai Offroaders or with friends. Last weekend from Big Red to Fossil Rock, before also starting at Iftar Bowl. I'll be in, definitely some more Land Rovers required in all the groups I drive a 2006 Defender, which does the job amazingly well in the dunes! Best, Manuel
  21. I found both, my first one and the current one on dubizzle. Thats pretty much the only source. You find others, mostly older ones also in Sharjah, but not in the best condition. Sometimes you can have luck, but you should be quick, most of them are gone within a day. Mine was pretty much stock, 40k km, no off road use. Started to change plenty of things now, thats pretty much the best way, at least then it's exactly how you want to have it and you know that all is done well. I was considering importing one. It's a bit of a pain since you might want to bring it from Europe. You get the taxes back, pay the roro shipping with 10k AED and registration shouldn't be an issue too. But then again you don't safe anything and could also go to Land Rover and buy a new one. They will have new deliveries with the 2.2l engine in January, starting 150k AED. Even if you put 30-40k on top for a couple of changes and modifications, you still end up with the same price of an imported one and having less issues and running after it.
  22. Hi! There is quite a big difference between 2006 and 2007. The ride up from 2007 is much smoother and the newer engine has a bit more torque, comes close to the petrol. But then again it has more electronics. For the use in Dubai it's all fine since there are always roads around and service is easy. If you want to bring it to other continents like Australia or Africa I would go for the TD5, it can be serviced almost everywhere. Back to the topic. I had a few more chats with petrol heads over the weekend and desert drive (where the diesel performed quite well in area 52) and I heard that the petrol catches fire quite easily. A diesel fill is around 200 AED (hurts a bit). And of course I won't sell mine
  23. I just got my 2nd 2006 Defender diesel for exactly the same purpose. The diesel is a quite reliable engine, I would say more then the petrol. Then again, the diesel is not really made to play in the dunes, but you can be sure to be able to get thrue any desert with it. It just doesn't really like the higher dunes. But this is in a way the same for the petrol. The car itself is quite heavy itself and just not build for playing on the dunes. Keeping this in mind, you can enjoy the standard TD5 and TD4 in the almost same way. Chipped, both reach easily 400-450Nm torque and do an amazing job. Talking about rocks and mountains, the Defender is quite outstanding I would say. Robust and really going everywhere and a bit more easy to drive than a petrol engine. Going steep with the diesel in low gear is unbelievable great and easy for both. My personal opinion: The petrol Defenders are difficult to find, especially in a good condition, they are quite old. Fitting a petrol engine into a newer one is not worth the money. The TD5 is best to tune (change the turbo and you get up to 220hp), the TD4 is more smooth, but still quite expensive. From the costs, diesel is double the price and not always easy to get (you need to get a diesel card for Abu Dhabi, stations don't always sell diesel etc.). But still, I do love the diesel since the engine is just running great and reliable, even more when thinking to go really off road and away from civilization. Cheers, Manuel
  24. It's quite easy, but if you are into heavy towing or recovery, add the towing kit, gives it more stability. Easy for DIY.
  25. Heya, I checked the import, generally possible and the shipping is not really expensive. Only the insurance for an imported car is a headache. Heard from Al Tayer that that they will get 2012 Defenders in January! Only 90 and 110 standard thought, but better than nothing I'm in the process of getting a TD5 90, best engine ever. Loud but reliable.
