If you have done that before, it is advisable to do it as it no rocket science. If you have never tried before nor sen before then i would suggest dont try to attempt it.
I have never done it but seen it many times and i know i can do it for sure (if required) but wont do it myself due to mess and risk involved. Its a serious component supplying water to whole engine cooling system and i wouldn't experiment on my car itself.

Nope, these are very rare consumable item which need change only if it wear off. You cant do much about extending there life as its upto the seal quality to how long to last.

Your car engine need a tune up and very slight increase in idle rpm, as it supposed to switch on electrical things without dying the engine. Once mechanic increase slight rpm then when you switch on electrical things it lower it down to 700 range (idle range).

If it has same bolt pattern (number and style of bolts) and can be fitted on wheel, then i wouldn't bother changing it to same size and yes you can use it as a spare tire no problem.
