Frederic replied to Frederic's topic in Off-Road Club's Offroad Drives
@Lucky sAm and @Xavier Treasurer I understand you would like to join the Fewbie level although you have both secured a spot in the Newbie drive. Rest assured the level difference will be very minimal and the Liwa experience won’t be less on a Newbie level drive. For now we take first priority for waitlisted members who don’t have any seat yet. -

Fewbie - LIWA 2020 Adventure Drive - 2 Dec 2020
Frederic replied to Frederic's topic in Off-Road Club's Offroad Drives
Hi @Athula Dharmadada A Newbie drive would be a better option if you are planning to bring family along. As I mentioned earlier this is extreme terrain which will demand the maximum of your vehicle for a whole day. There is still space available and will make the experience better for your family. Driving for 5-6 hours in this terrain as a passenger will be very demanding. -

DRIVE REPORT Leading an Absolute Newbie drive is always an adventure, and seeing the smiles again after a few hours of dune-driving makes it all worth. We started off with deflating, and stressed on the importance of getting it right. There is only a little bit of air pressure difference between 14 or 18psi, but the result can be felt immediately, so it was good to experience this and practice it right. Nevertheless after a few hours of desert driving the pressure will slowly creep up again, so it's good keeping an eye on it from time to time. The entry point brought us almost immediately into the long range dunes, where we practiced some minor sidesloping and made some nice loops. Firstly because it is fun, but also because it teaches you all about steering control and the use of momentum. The two Pajeros behind me, with @Abdul Rahman Abdul Kader doing an amazing job as second lead, and @Abilash Madhavan getting the hang of his capable Pajero, were in pursuit of my little blue, that has spent a week in the workshop and i was glad to finally take back the steering wheel. @Santhosh kumar Rajasekaran driving the mighty Range Rover, is not the easiest vehicle to learn, but you did well and kept a cool head, even when the engine starting throwing some errors and @sertac had to do some diagnosis with his magic OBD box. @Gavin Hill and @Chris Meir were excited to hit the dunes, and you guys both did amazing. Gavin, i hope your initial fear of getting the Hummer H2 stuck in the sand has been replaced with the confidence and knowledge that the key thing is momentum at all times, especially when driving a big mighty V8. You both did a cracking job ! @Rajesh Anchan and @Bala Krishnan both brought their Prados to the drive, and both drove really well ! The same applied for @Dinesh Dembla and @pramod who brought the legendary Landcruiser. Well done guys ! @Thomas Varghese you were in the back of the convoy and that is always a little bit more difficult because of the churned up sand, but you were also lucky to receive the wonderful guidance from @sertac who did an absolute amazing job today. Keep up the momentum and don't be afraid to wake up the beast that a Xterra is. You will be surprised once it wakes up Moving forward you all will be joining the Newbie drives and not an Absolute Newbie drive. Drives are announced every Sunday at 11 am, and they go live on Sunday at 7 pm. Due to the high demand, these drives get full in about 10 minutes, so please be online at 7 pm to book your spot. UPDATE FOR NEXT WEEK: BECAUSE OF THE LIWA EVENT THERE WILL BE A LESSER NUMBER OF DRIVES ON THE WEEKEND OF 4 DECEMBER For the next drives, please bring along a deflator, pressure gauge, flag and radio as a minimum. Learn to deflate your tires and checking them precisely Learn to fix a flag on your car Learn to program and fully charge your radio Also like I mentioned during the debriefing, join the Carnity Whatsapp Drive Notification to get the latest updates on the drives, so that you can RSVP on time for the next weekend's drive. Please have a look at below topic which describes the tools needed for every level. There is a separate tutorial inside which explains which radio we recommend and how to program them: (Please do not buy the Baofeng 888S spare radio we gave you, as these cannot be programmed without a special cable and software). Please have a look at below grading structure that explains various off-road levels: See you guys soon in the sand again !

DRIVE RSVP IS NOW CLOSED We are having a nice convoy with lots of capable cars, and a very strong support with @sertac being my sweep to keep an eye on the convoy. Please make sure to bring a tyre deflator and pressure gauge. We will be deflating our tyres when we arrive to about 14-15psi to make sure the car is "floating" on the sand instead of digging in it. For the ones that have a radio, we will be using Carnity Channel 1: 446.00625 Mhz. We have spare radios for the members that do not have a radio yet. Please arrive on time 06:00AM SHARP or preferably a bit earlier. Most people on the drive arrive 15-20mins earlier so they have ample time to deflate and put their flag on. Make sure you and your passengers are wearing a mask when you are outside the vehicle, this is a strict rule and makes sure we can all keep safe and according to the government regulations. In case of emergency, you can reach me on 056 504 2632. See you guys tomorrow !

@pramod Welcome to Carnity Offroad Club ! You have probably come across lots of information on this drive topic, the website, and might have a lot of questions on how to prepare yourself for your first offroad drive with us. Rest assured we have covered all the essential information already in many topics, tutorials, and we will be guiding you through every step along they way to becoming a confident safe offroader. The first thing i'd like to ask of you is to briefly introduce yourself: 1) Which 4x4 are you driving/bringing to the drive ? 2) Do you have any prior offroading experience? If so please specify. 3) Does your vehicle have front and rear towpoints and are they in good condition ? Furthermore, we have made an amazing Absolute Newbie briefing video which really helps in getting you to understand the first basic essentials, so please watch it with full attention: MUST WATCH: NEWBIE VIDEO BRIEFING For your first offroad drive with us you will only need a few offroad gears: - A pressure gauge and deflator so you can deflate your tyres (available in Speedex, Ace, Dragon Mart). - A compressor to inflate your tyres (the compressor at the Last Exit ADNOC has been defective for the last few weeks) - A fully serviced vehicle with front and rear towpoints, and a spare wheel that is usable in case needed. In case you have more offroad gears you are of course welcome to bring it along. After this drive, you can start joining Newbie level drives and for that you will need the following gears: - An offroad flag. - A Two-Way UHF radio that can be programmed to our Carnity channels. - A full size shovel. - Pressure gauge and deflator. Please do not hesitate to ask your questions on this drive topic. We have many specialists on the forum that will be able to help you out.

Gaia GPS For Beginners - 2024 Update
Frederic replied to Frederic's topic in Off-Road Club's Discussions
How to download "Offline Maps" in Gaia. When you are travelling in areas where there is a lack of mobile data (3G/4G), your gps device (smartphone) will not be able to show you the sattelite maps of your area. Hence, you will need to use the offline-map functionality which allows you to download a selected area and save it on your phone. If you are using a gps device (smartphone) without a data SIM, you can use this same option. Below video shows you how to download offline maps in gaia: 1) Select your base map first 2) Click on the + symbol and select "download maps" 3) with the blue dots, create your square area and make sure not to exceed 10,000 tiles. 4) Click on save. The download might take a while, depending on the size of the area. It is recommended to put the zoom level on 15, this gives a good detailed overview without taking up too much space. -

Fewbie - LIWA 2020 Adventure Drive - 2 Dec 2020
Frederic replied to Frederic's topic in Off-Road Club's Offroad Drives
@Lucky sAm you are signed up for the Liwa Newbie, so the first waitlisted one will be @Piotr Kolodziej Good morning @Piotr Kolodziej, with Rizwan cancelling from the drive, you are the first eligible one on the list, please confirm if you can make it. Message to all: Currently we are still full, and i would request the remaining Fewbies who are on this waitlist to send a message on the Liwa Newbie drive with the request to be put on the waitlist. At least you might find yourself lucky to secure a spot on that drive. -
Hi @syed1987 If you have 1year warrantly this might be only valid if you stick with Futtaim services during that year. Maybe ask them once. You can keep the car as long as you like, 150k is not much in this part of the world. The Durango is maybe not the most reliable car, but if you look after it, it should easily go beyond 250k.

Finding a hotel will not be easy. As my wife and myself are both desert freaks, we will be setting up camp somewhere in the area and have a good night of sleep. -
Fewbie - LIWA 2020 Adventure Drive - 2 Dec 2020
Frederic replied to Frederic's topic in Off-Road Club's Offroad Drives
Goodmorning to all ! I am sharing some information that was posted on the Newbie Liwa drive earlier by Srikumar, which will be applicable for us as well: Drive Preparation 1. Firstly, get lots and lots of rest the previous day on 1st Dec. The more the better as Liwa will not only challenge your vehicle but your mind as well. We would need your complete focus and fatigue due to less rest is the last thing that is needed on such a terrain. 2. Ensure that your 4x4 is well serviced recently and all the lubes and fluids are topped up 3. 20 Liter fuel jerry can. If you have any doubts, please post your query on the drive post and we will assist. 4. A full fuel tank at the meeting point. 5. Spare tyre should be in good working condition. If not been used recently, ensure that you take it out and check the condition properly. Also ensure that you have the wrench that can be used to remove your tyre (if needed). In the past we have seen that people upgrade their tyres but still keep the the original wrench which is of no use to remove the upgraded tyre. So please ensure that your car has the right tool to remove the tyres (if needed). 6. Air compressor, proper shovel, flag, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, 7. Fully charged radio (tuned to all Carnity Frequencies) with spare battery / radio. If you have a car charger for your radio, please bring it along. 8. All traction controls, ABS and Air bags need to be switched off. If it requires pulling the fuse, please research before the drive or better still, post your queries on this drive post and we would assist. 9. Car charger / battery pack for your mobile. 10. Plenty of water, approx 5 litre per person per day. 11. Bring along your breakfast, lunch, snacks, etc in easy to eat packing. We shall be having breaks in between the drive. 12. Dry food, energy bar, cookies, nuts, crisp to munch while driving 13. Bring garbage bags along to carry your trash. Littering in the desert is strictly prohibited. Keep checking this list, as it might grow further in coming days. All the above points are Mandatory and your participation on the drive would be refused on the drive day by the trip lead if you fail to comply with the above. Details of the exact meeting point will be updated on the Original Drive Post and Calendar shortly. Meeting time is 8 AM and we plan to exit out at Moreeb by 4 PM with sufficient breaks in between. There is a plan to have some nice photoshoots at the base of Moreeb dune at the end of the drive along with the other convoys (subject to everything going according to plan). More details will keep getting updated on this drive post. Please read this carefully before confirming your signup. A drive in LIWA is no way to be compared to any other drive in the UAE, and making shortcuts in your preparation might spoil your trip for yourself and other members of the convoy. -

I believe no amount of demonstration will help you to self-recover fully successfully because you are watching someone else. From the moment you get stuck yourself your brain starts to process things differently and at that point in time you should go through the following things in your head: 1) Stay calm and announce your stuck or refusal on the radio. 2) Exit the vehicle and walk around it. Most probably you will quickly see what is causing the stuck. 3) Engage 4Lo. 4) Steer 5 times left, 5 times right and give a tiny amount of gas just to see if you can get the car to move a bit. 5) If the vehicle is still moving, you can most-probably crawl yourself out slowly. 6) If the vehicle is not moving, go over to the use of a Rear Diff lock, and try again gently. 7) If still no movement is occuring, take out the shovel and identify the areas where sand needs to be cleared. As you can see these things will come with time and practice, and time and time again i have noticed some people nod a YES that they understood our verbal instructions, but when faced with the real scenario, their body goes into 'block' mode and they start to panic, become agitated, and seem to have difficulties in listening to very simple instructions.

If you consider that a petrol engine only has an efficiency of 25-35%, and the rest is being evacuated in the form of heat which is useless, we really need to find something better. If EV will be the gamechanger, or a mix of hydrogen, hybrid, or other technologies will take over remains to be seen. Any vehicle can have a soul in my opinion, and i do understand your point and love the rumbling noise of a V8 as well, but we should look forward and not backward.
