  2. UAE is planning a new road project called ‘Maliha-Khor Fakkan’ which is expected to complete in the second quarter of 2019 and will significantly reduce the trip time when traveling both inner cities and going out of the city. The Maliha-Khor Fakkan project is a 5.5-kilometer-long road which will link the Sheikh Khalifa Road E84 with Dibba-Khor Fakkan-Kalba E99 road as well as the Sharjah-Maliha E102 road. The project is worth Dh150 million and includes four lanes, two in each direction along with a 360-meter tunnel as well. With the completion of this project, the traveling time is expected to reduce by more than 40 percent. 3. Just a month back, Tesla CEO Elon Musk made an announcement on his twitter account that Saudi Arabia has offered to invest in Tesla to help the company go private. The claim was taken back when Elon Musk again officially stated that he has no plans to make the company private and Tesla will remain a public company. Reports indicate that Saudi Arabia denied the funds due to which Elon Musk had to change his plans. However, what’s surprising is that just a month later, the Saudi Public Investment Fund has decided to invest $1 billion dollars in Lucid which is a competitor of Tesla. Lucid Motors Inc. which had delayed the plans of launching its ‘Air’ sedan can now start producing the car in 2020. Lucid Motors Inc further revealed their plan to build a plant in Arizona and produce up to 20,000 units of the car in the first year. The PIF investment in Lucid Motors Inc. may have its advantages but the timing of everything raises a lot of questions. What do you think might be the reason of Saudi Arabia not investing in Tesla and choosing Lucid instead? Do share your opinion with us.
  4. Dubai-based ride-hailing company Careem Networks FZ launched its car service in Turkey just last year and is now abandoning it to shift its attention towards the $1.5 billion taxi market. Talking about the decision, Ibrahim Manna, the managing director of emerging markets at Careem stated that the company is in talks with some potential partners to improve the quality of the taxi service in the region. Other news suggests that Careem’s rival, Uber Technologies which is another San Francisco based ride-hailing company, plans to acquire Careem and expand its operations in the Middle East as well. Both Careem and Uber have faced government crackdowns and have paid a huge amount of fine in their attempt to launch the ride-hailing service in Turkey. Although these ride-hailing companies offer a much better ride quality and comfort compared to a regular taxi, they are definitely giving a hard time to the traditional cab drivers. Share your opinion with us whether you prefer these ride-hailing services or love traveling in the regular taxi.
  5. Industries around the world employing robots for their everyday tasks but auto industry employees have nothing to worry about as more automakers are still employing human staff. According to research done by Bloomberg, 11 out of 13 publicly traded carmakers had employed more staff members since 2013 making an overall 11 percent increase in hiring. Automakers in China and other countries are employing more human workers as it involves considerably lesser investment compared to deploying robots. Moreover, auto industries in the developed countries have already automated a number of their processes years ago and now they are investing more in research and development. More staff is being added on R&D as companies continue to research new technologies and innovations such as autonomous cars, connected and electric vehicles. Also, companies are hiring people for software positions as the future of cars is mostly concerned with how complex programs are used to allow different vehicles to communicate with each other and their surroundings. Seems like there is still a lot of potential for a career path in the automotive industry. Do share with us your opinion if you are also looking to build your career in the automotive industry.
  6. Road accidents are increasing every day in Dubai and this leads to traffic congestion in the whole city. To tackle this problem, RTA and the Dubai Police have collaborated to introduce a new Traffic Incidents Management (TIM) system. The Traffic Incident Management system was launched officially on 16th September 2018 and was inaugurated by key figures of both Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police. Special breakdown vehicles were also seen to be deployed at different locations on the Mohammad Bin Zayed Road. Special breakdown response vehicles will be positioned every 30 kilometers on the national expressway road which is approximately 70 kilometers long and connects Dubai with Abu Dhabi as well as Sharjah. These vehicles will be well equipped with latest technologies and communication devices to clear up the accident site quickly and assist the drivers to a safe place. The TIM system is expected to reduce traffic delays by up to 35 percent by removing the vehicles involved in an accident and restoring the traffic flow ASAP. This effort by RTA and Dubai Police deserves an applaud as it will definitely improve the traffic situation in the city and ensure the safety of every driver. Do share your opinion about this new initiative and tell us how beneficial it will be for UAE drivers.

  8. A few months back, Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) suspended the carpooling permit known as ‘Sharekni’ leaving the drivers confused whether or not they can continue with the ride sharing. Now, the UAE police have confirmed that a Dh3,000 fine will be imposed on anyone indulging in carpooling. Besides the Dh3,000 fine, motorists will also receive 24 black points and their vehicle will be confiscated for 30 days if they are found breaking this traffic law. Talking to the media, Brigadier Ibrahim Sultan Al Zaabi, director of the transport security department mentioned that the new regulation regarding banning carpool is introduced to ensure the protection of every citizen. He further mentioned that there are a lot of dangers associated with carpooling such as theft, fraud and sexual harassment which is why it is important to put an end to this practice. The director of Planning and Business Development at RTA’s Public Transport Agency, Mohammad Abu Bakr Al Hashemi stated that there are a number of smart taxis and ride-hailing services available in the region which are safe and should be used by the citizens as opposed to choosing the carpooling option. Although banning carpooling will affect a lot of people, it does have some disadvantages, especially for women. Do share your thoughts if you are one of those who will get affected by this rule.
  9. We have some bad news for the Abu Dhabi residents. The Department of Transport (DoT) has recently added new areas to the paid parking zones. Some of them include Al Bateen, Al Karama and Al Muroor. Sadly, all of these areas were previously free parking zones. The new paid parking system called ‘Mawafiq’ will soon spread across all of Abu Dhabi and there will be no free parking zones. According to the Department of Transport, this paid parking system will help to tackle the issue of illegal parking and will help in reducing the traffic congestion in the city. However, residents seem unhappy and have complained that this new system will eat up a significant portion of their monthly budget. Talking to Khaleej Times, Awad Mustafa living in Al Bateen mentioned that the paid parking system puts an extra financial burden on his family. Another resident mentioned that she has to pay over Dh800 for the annual parking permit and that is definitely a lot of money. Do you think the decision for the paid parking zone is for the betterment of the capital city or will it affect your monthly expenditure as well?

According to the Abu Dhabi Municipality, an inspection campaign is being conducted to improve the appearance of the capital city and as a result, these dusty old abandoned cars are being confiscated. Moreover, more than 700 street vendors have been fined as well as a part of the campaign. Do you think this is a good initiative taken by the Abu Dhabi authorities or should they provide a better alternative for the situation? Do share with us if you have any suggestion about how this matter could be resolved.
  11. Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA) is best known for introducing new policies and procedures to make the lives of an ordinary Dubai’s citizen convenient. Following the introduction of a new way to pay the fine in installments through the credit card, RTA has now launched an ‘automatic vehicle registration renewal’ service which is totally online. The automatic online vehicle registration renewal service was previously available only for the corporate sector but is now officially accessible to the private individuals as well. The move is a part of the RTA’s grand plan to migrate most of its services to digital platforms. So how do you take advantage of this service? It’s fairly simple! Just visit the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) website and click on the ‘Licensing’ service tab. After that, you can sign up with your personal details including the vehicle’s plate number. It is also important to have the e-wallet service which is absolutely free and allows the motorist to pay for the services online. The e-wallet service can be obtained by signing up on www.nol.ae.
