  3. @Alfred Alinazar if everyone on the drive was newbie, I would possibly have chosen a different route. This is why all level drives are so important and helpful. You did very well. We all get scared of dunes - absolutely nothing wrong with that.
  4. Post Drive Report Nice drive this morning with fantastic support from the senior drivers for the less experienced. I would have said 'We drove all night, to get to you...' [Ed: enough of this game] but maybe it just felt that way because the drive started early. We took the dune route to the bowls, which mercifully were not churned up like on my last visit to Margham and had a bit of fun in the bowls. Knowing what was to come, this was not too long. The characteristics of the dunes around this area is that they are small, semi technical and have a lot of soft sand - which was made more challenging by the high winds we have experienced in the last week. It makes for a drive that is challenging in that you need to keep your wits about you, but is not super technical so that it's just a struggle. As Angela said it is a long and winding road, and can be upscaled or made easier depending on the convoy response: and the response was very good. I imagine that @Alfred Alinazar might feel that he had more recoveries today than most - but you need to keep in mind that half the convoy was intermediate drivers who should not be getting stuck on a drive like this. Actually, considering the complexity of the dunes all the newbies and fewbies did extremely well to manage what this drive had to offer. That you've experienced so many self recoveries will be essential as you move on. @SP kALATH I think that you were right to self certify to Fewbie was the right move for you, but you see that as the drives we run will get more challenging it will take time to used to your car again. The crest you suffered was all down to power and momentum not quite being there. @Warren Flay You've given me real insights today about the 'small' changes that can be done to make the float of the car and the response on bumpy terrain a little easier on the vehicle. You drove really well in this new configuration and I am glad you learned a few new things on this drive. @Anoop Nair if there is one piece of essential feedback it's that you really have to think about the fact you are driving in a convoy and that has responsibilities to the other drivers. As far as your driving generally, you have a manual and that means that you have different challenges to some of the other drivers. Making sure you use the flexibility of the having a clutch and leveraging it better is something on which you need to work on future drives. @TT_Dubai my surprise at your choice of drive was matched by how well you drive that beast. I am actually a little envious that you can choose to drive either an SWB or LWB depending on how the mood takes you. And, unless you are a pro (and that's the job), the fact that you also have time to play golf just adds insult to injury. You're welcome to join the pub quiz team any time - your specialty might have to be Sport. @Ishraque Ahammed each drive is a learning experience and the good fortune for you was that you had Alex behind you helping you through every challenge that was faced. There were no serious issues at all, just a need from you to get more confidence in your ability to self recover and use the power under your foot. @Wade Pat2 everyone loves the car and the story and you really are getting to grips with the capabilities. The one towed recovery we did was very well handled as was the rest of the drive. @Lawrence_Chehimi great drive. Probably quite relaxing for you and a chance to continue to refine your control and finesse. I still believe (or perhaps like to believe) it's reassuring for the guys ahead of you in big vehicles to see the way you handle your Y62. @Gaurav Soni your enthusiasm and generosity in helping others throughout the drive is impressive. You restrained the desire to play, playing by assisting the other drivers instead. @Nikibrilliant second lead. Rerouting when needed, keeping the right distance, holding the convoy when needed ... patient. And you picked up the 80s and 90s rock ballads references, because 'Nothing Compares to You'. I'm looking forward to see if any of the action shots you took worked out. @Watteau outstanding support Alex. Listening to your calm, considered, confident support for the other drivers around you is a absolute pleasure. Your most impressive moment: asking for advice from the seniors on the one recovery that you did not feel like you had the experience. I cannot express strongly enough what an unbelievably sensible and impactful moment that was in the drive. There are so many that would simply not have had the wherewithal to stop, think and then say, 'I need your advice'. That's true leadership. @Foxtrot Oscar honoured you'd spend your first support since your promotion supporting this drive. I truly enjoyed your support and knowing that the convoy was in good hands from front to back. It was a nice easy day for you I hope with all the support we had. Thanks everyone of a great drive. I enjoyed my morning. I love the continued learning of helping drivers develop their expertise in this hobby. Thanks for letting me have that opportunity. See you soon in the sand.
  5. As I missed out the ship's wheel as well as one of the requirements, preferably digital as otherwise it's challenging to strap down.
  6. Dear IM drivers, @Niki @Watteau @Shaaz Sha @Gaurav Soni (sorry @Lawrence_Chehimi for reasons that will become clear tomorrow you're out of the reckoning) having deliberated long and hard with @Foxtrot Oscar we have set and arranged the IM challenge for tomorrow. Please be sure to have in your vehicles for the start of the drive the following: Pen or pencil Scientific Calculator (most mobile phones will have this functionality) A sexton or other appropriate device Sunglasses Scarf All will become clear during the briefing tomorrow.
  7. Something like that, but not based on speed. These things will never be hurried or rushed as that is not the idea.
  8. @Niki @Gaurav Soni @Shaaz Sha @Watteau - up for a challenge? I'm thinking you'll all enjoy a special Intermediate activity that I plan for you tomorrow during the drive. I'll explain to you in the morning a 'merit' points based system that we will use during the drive tomorrow. Be very careful as @Foxtrot Oscar will be the ultimate arbiter of who our 'winner' will be.
  9. Let's hope my navigation in the sand is better than keeping track of these things! Delighted to have another SWB 3.8 in the convoy. R
  10. Dear Margham Marauders After the incredible winds of this week, we all hope that what we will find around Margham are pristine, virgin sands for our drive Friday. We will be disappointed if we expect that in the wonderful bowls around Margham itself - but we will try to find them and see if we cannot play just a little bit! From there we will be making our way through some wonderfully swoopy, small fund dunes: nothing too challenging, but for the newbies you will need to have your concentration level on high. The good news, this is a truly all levels drive now, with almost as many senior, experienced drivers as newbie or fewbie. Newbie's and Fewbies, this is an opportunity for you to watch and learn. Don't under estimate how much you can pick up from watching the car in front, and if it's an intermediate, it means that they have been honing their skills for some time, have control of throttle and steering and know what to avoid and what not. Intermediates, fantastic that you're embodying the spirit of Carnity and joining an all levels drive. Passing on your experience and knowledge to the drivers on this drive will be so valuable to them. They can see how you drive the line, the gas you use, the small potentially imperceptible alterations that you make that let you float above the sand - but it takes discipline: because you're setting the example. Here's our proposed convoy. @Niki @Anoop Nair @Gaurav Soni @TT_Dubai @Alfred Alinazar @Shaaz Sha @Ishraque Ahammed @Wade Pat2 @Watteau @Warren Flay @SP kALATH @Lawrence_Chehimi @Foxtrot Oscar If by some chance I got someone's rank wrong - my apologies. We will be using Carnity radio channel 2. Briefing will be in car, because we are still driving under COVID restrictions. Hopefully, now this list is published, we are done with the changes ... but you never know. See you soon in the sand.
  11. That's a shame for you LUca, thanks for the update. Looks like Lucas just opened up a spot for you Wade.
  12. @Fabien Monleau it looks like you signed in for multiple drives at the same time. As you are confirmed on the dirve with @Brette I have signed you out of this drive. Look forward to seeing you some time soon. @Rjducos - looks like you got a drive on @Brette drive, so I will assume you are moved off this W/L
  13. It's a good question. The problem is simply that even with social distancing, we run the risk on a 15 car convoy of someone saying that we held a gathering and we end up with a DHM5000 individual fine and a DHM50,000 fine for the business. We are allowed to drive in our own cars on sand in the same way as on the road - but in the same way that if we stopped in a public car park and had a meeting we would breach the rules, a socially distanced debrief on the sand would be the same. Believe me, Lakshmi, those of us that joined the club before COVID miss these gatherings a lot and cannot wait to get back to the way we used to be able to get to know each other.
  14. Why do I look forward to Fridays? It's days like how this Friday is shaping up that were part of the reason I found Carnity to be the environment in which my 4x4 journey is so special. It's down to this - when a drive ends up as an all levels drive and the senior, more experienced drivers, join a drive that is at a level lower than they are 'capable' of driving. Capability is one thing, community, is another. Carnity is a combination of the two words and what COVID has done is remove some of the community from our club, because we cannot gather any longer at the end of drives like we used to, nor can we debrief after a drive and get to know one another. So it's great when experienced drivers come along and make a drive all levels - for what ever reason - and share their experience with drivers just starting out their journey in the club. Just being able to follow the tracks of an experienced driver can give such confidence to a beginner or almost beginner. On a long convoy like we have this week it's easy for the first few drivers to follow the lead's tracks, but at the end12, 13 or 14 cars down the line, you're driving through sand soup or a flattened path. The advantage of having more seasoned drivers ahead is that you'll start to see the subtle changes they make to deal with churned sand, the slight alterations that they take from the original line to make the drive easier or the way that they somehow manage to maintain momentum and float above the sand. For the more experienced drivers, it's an opportunity to practice a skill, or simply sit back and relax a bit in the desert. So, let's take the benefit of having all levels in the drive. My convoy positioning will take advantage of this for sure, and let's hope that with all the experience on show we can have a truly fun and exciting drive for everyone. See you soon in the sand.

On which I am delighted to say we will be joined by Carnity's newest marshal @Foxtrot Oscar (means I will need to be on best behaviour). We will be sharing more details with you as the week progresses, but look forward to some nice bowls, challenging semi technical dunes, a palace and potentially an unexpected exit point. All of this, as ever, and where we end up will depend totally on the convoy and how we manage to get through the challenges put in front of us. See you soon in the sand.
  18. Quick update: With massive thanks to @Nivin I have a new bumper and grille installed in the vehicle already, so ready for the next drives. Planning is to get the additional light bar fitted that will show the sand directly in front of the car some time this week! Thanks for all the support in getting the car out of the ditch!

  21. Post Drive Report I am not sure there is a lot to add to the fantastic reports submitted already by @Shaaz Sha and @M.Seidam. You've pretty much said it all. Leading a night drive is completely different experience than the day, and making it sufficiently entertaining for an ALL LEVELS drive (which this became) is a challenge. That would have not been possible without the amazing support of @Islam Soliman and @M.Seidam , whi have managed every recovery and the limited number of stucks with calm authority and efficiency that I barely had to get out of my seat. I had planned the change in the convoy before the drive, and somehow did not upload it before leaving. The importance of a good second lead on a night drive is really critical. Having @MUHAMMAD Kashif RAZZAQ there to re route or stop in time was wonderful, and while the same cannot be said of myself (!), he never put a wheel wrong. He was patient in the moments i needed to self recover - I think that @Gaurav Soni really enjoyed watching one of my self recoveries (while listening to the offers from others to come to my rescue) - and really made sure that he kept up with my at all times. To be the only newbie on this drive can not have been easy. @Fabiano Morais probably felt a bit guilty about having to recover more than most: but that's the point. Newbie is the time when you learn these skills and with the amazing level of experienced support on the drive, you handled things really well and by the end, were doing well about newbie level without assistance. It's a shame that the car started to tire earlier. It's been some time since @bony raphi had been seen on a drive, so welcome back. Once you get the rust out of the wrangler, I think that you'll be back to your old tricks and more. What else to remark? @Thomas Varghese risking life, limb and rainy weather conditions to perfectly recover @Shehab Alawadhi (who once again provided a ridge flattening service for those behind him). As we said, intermediate level s not just about being able to self recover your car, it's also about giving the assistance to others when needed. @Ehab and @Nithin Vaidirour fewbies handled all well and especially in the second section of the drive back into Last Exit - where we did increase the level a little because we could. All in all, a great journey. The last 400 meters - if nothing else, a great teamwork recover with @Islam Soliman for that which was really the theme of the evening. The team work was great. Because of the timing it seems everyone was chilling out the more we drove. And ... my bumper needed replacing anyhow! See you soon in the sand.
