Every gearbox has oil, if there is no dipstick in hood for gearoil other than engine oil dipstick then it needs to be checked from down by opening the bolt and seeing the level.

It cud be drum need a change or re surfacing. Brake drum often gets un noticed.

Warning lamp appear for a reason, get a thorough computer test with AGMC or outside dealer who has OBD II scanner for BMW to trace the fault with its fault codes.
