  1. Dear Murquab Morning Early Risers, Here is the convoy for our drive on Friday morning. It's quite a long convoy, so please come with your heads clear and ready to use everything you learned so far in your Newbie career - or we might find ourselves stuck and waiting for a lot of recoveries over this drive. Be prepared for the drive to be challenging for most Newbies because there will be lots of different types of dunes: sweeping long dunes, climbs, descents and technical dunes. If you're on the cusp of promotion to Fewbie, use the drive to practice and hone your skills. We will be doing our best to make sure that everyone feels that the drive lived up to expectations as a fun learning experience. You will be expected bright and early Friday morning. As the sun rises around 5.20am we should start the drive in the gloom, but not the dark. See you soon in the sand.
  2. As it's your first drive, and you are coming from AD (no newbies this week) I will open up a slot for you and add you to the drive.

There is a waitlist, so if anything has changed in your plans: please sign out and give another driver the chance. Otherwise, tomorrow you will see the proposed convoy for the drive and the radio channel will be set. See you soon in the sand.

Myself and @Lorenzo Candelpergher will be delighted to see you and we look forward to a fun and exhilarating drive together, supported by @Veedooshee. Our plan is to see if we can take a Newbie convoy all the way from Murquab through to Last Exit. That's a challenge even for more experienced drivers, so we will see how far we can get in that plan. It's always good to set expectations high, but accept that it might not end up the way we planned; perhaps that can be the motto for Off Roading. If anyone is a doubt for the drive, please sign out early. We already have a waitlist for the drive and if you cannot come, it's a shame to deny the chance to someone else. For me, one of the exciting things about this drive is the chance to meet so many new faces with whom I never drove before and the chance to see the develpment of one or two where I led their absolute newbie. Expect all your newly learned skills to be challenged on this drive. We will have a few descents, some baja running, a little technical section and some big wide dunes on which to play - basically, this drive has it all. See you soon in the sand.

  7. @varunmehndiratta congratulations on the birth of your baby ... No more problems with early starts. You'll be up anyhow.
  8. Post Drive Report Starting in Maleha for the first time in absolutely ages brought back memories of my first Carnity drives what seems like years ago (but is actually less than 2 years). In the 'old' days, we met at the ADNOC on the 102 and then drove in a convoy to the deflation point. I am not sure if this was to keep our deflation points a secret or to make sure that latecomers had no chance of finding the convoy. Today(almost) everyone arrived on time and we got under way. A night (or dark drive) around Maleha was a pleasure and an opportunity to find some old 'playgrounds' that I rarely visit. One of these in the dark, one in the gloom and one in daylight: all without tracks and so those that wanted to play had the chance. To my cost I managed to land my car on an unassuming hump from which I was removed with assistance - and had nasty noises coming from under the car after that the whole drive. Inevitably, it sort of restricted my adventurous ambitions as I felt I was nursing both myself (for other reasons) and the car. Perhaps I should have taken Dr's advice, but did not want to cancel the drive or cut it short. Escaping from Fossil Rock we had a great flowing ride towards Faya turning away to find the roundabout that would let us enter the next stage of our odyssey. This was a completely unexplored area for me. It's not often visited because there is a lot of vegetation and finding a flowing route and challenging dunes for IM ranked drivers is difficult. As we found today, there was also a lot (and I mean a lot) of very soft sand patches. Having taken less than 2 hours to cover the Fossil Rock part of the drive in good time, I was hopeful for the chance to cross at 2nd December and make it to Big Red - but it was not to be. We had too many stucks, stops, pop outs and deflating tires to really allow that. We will come back to this drive to 'complete' the marathon and start at 2nd December. Everyone did really well today. @Abdul Rahman AK deserves a medal for recovering me more than once, @Watteau was as ever impeccable in sweep - and the truth is that everyone @Danish Mohammad @Lakshmi Narasimhan @Niki @Ashok chaturvedi @Dodi Syahdar drove very well. It was a very different style of IM drive, intentionally so. IM drivers need to not only be able to criss-cross, ridge ride and climb but also adapt to different landscapes and enjoy different types of drive conditions. An exploration means that you have to deal with what ever comes in the drive: as everyone managed today. Thanks for the amazing team work and contributions from all. There were sections today with absolute radio silence: always a good sign in my view, so it was not all bad! See you soon in the sand.
  9. Hi All As promised, the convoy plan for the morning. We will be starting in the dark, so anyone who did not yet have a night drive, I expect around 45 minutes of dark once we get going. It's a different experience than driving in the day. I am proposing using Carnity channel 10. It worked perfectly during the drive earlier in the week. Any questions/comments add them here. See you soon in the sand.
  10. Good Morning All, Ashok chaturvedi @Ashok chaturvedi Niki @Niki Watteau @Watteau Dodi Syahdar @Dodi Syahdar Lakshmi Narasimhan @Lakshmi Narasimhan Danish Mohammad @Danish Mohammad Abdul Rahman AK @Abdul Rahman AK varunmehndiratta @varunmehndiratta To be honest, I have vascillated this week. Should we try to cross the whole of the Carnity Sharjah/Dubai territory in a single drive or not. The concern: we heard through the grapevine that there were checks being made in some areas. There's been some great drives taking place in Sharjah this week without issue. So. it's on with plan A. It all depends on us whether we make it 5, 10, 20 or 100km! I am not making promises of extensive ridge riding or criss cross - we have a lot of distance to cover and we will take what ever conditions come along the way. I'll publish a convoy a little later in the day, however, as this is an IM drive, the buddy system will be in place so be preapred for that. See you soon in the sand.
  11. Post Drive Report With the benefit of a few moments reflection and a brief snooze, this morning's drive goes down as one of the most fun. The drivers, the teamwork, the support, the weather: it all coalesced into a multi level sensory experience of sight, sound, vision and movement. OK - maybe that's a bit over the top, but it was a great drive. Entering Murquab in the dark we made the most of the gloom to enjoy an hour of night driving before the sun came up. I really had questioned my sanity in posting a drive to start at 4.30am, however, when you can add a night drive session in a long drive like this, knowing that the sun will rise and then the daylight fun can start. And so it did. Making our way through the dunes we found long range, technical and soft, soft sand. And then some technical dunes! Safely through this section we moved onto the Baja run. For some this was the first time, for others an opportunity to return, or an opportunity to scare the bejesus out of ourselves. We then made our way towards Last Exit. Normally, the route we take is to swing a long way West and then come back into Last Exit through the slip side of the long range dunes. As things were going so well today, and all drivers were really on form, I decided to shake it up a little and take a relatively untraveled route into Last Exit, through some small challenging dunes all of which had unexpected sand traps and pockets. The wind that has been howling around the last week and the rain that fell aplenty in Qudra had created multiple new challenges. Dune structures have changed quite radically, dune shape was altered and at times uncomfortable with massive ripples and bumps aplenty and there was a massive increase in the vegetation. The result, a final hour where no-one spoke: radio silence. This group of drivers is normally full of banter - indeed, there were as ever moments to true giggling hilarity in the early hours of this drive. So the radio silence was even more unexpected, or perhaps not. As a lead, that silence says that you've found the route that is challenging enough that the drivers are all giving it respect and focused on navigating through the challenges so we keep moving. And keep it moving we did, ending on an overlanding section that required our convoy to kiss the Qudra signs as we arrived back on to 'dry' land. Some mentions. @Humayun Ghias - faultless in your first second lead. I really enjoyed having your support here and help when needed. I was really impressed with your control. Sorry that the bumper needs attention, but you knew that was coming at some stage! @Ranjan Das - your Rubi is in safe and secure hands and I can see that you are simply going to enjoy every second of this vehicle offroad. This is version 3 in which I saw you, and is by far the best. @Chinthaka Ruwan - a great drive from you today. Quite exciting to see your progress. @Lakshmi Narasimhan - you are the ultimate team player. It's great to have you on these drives. Always helping, always learning and never holding anyone responsible for what's happening on your drive except for you. @Niki - Saved me twice today as my tires seem to have become quite flatulent during the drive, and simply drove like a pro (as ever). How you limited yourself to 60kph on the longer runs is quite impressive. @Matt.T - love it when you come on one of my drives. The fact that there's not a lot heard from you (apart from when I know you licked up on one or two of the comments) says it all. @Alain Canivet-Abikhalil - since your first MC, to all the drives on which we shared since, your smile, enjoyment and excitement of being on the drives comes through load and clear. I am really enjoying watching how you improve drive after drive and as this was your first Fewbie Plus, amazing drive. @Jeepie - what can I say? Your support in everything (not just these drives) I cannot start to explain how much this is appreciated. Thank you for supporting the drive today impeccably and calmly as ever today. @Christopher Assal - your independent drives are showing through loud and clear in the improvement in your control and capabilities. It's becoming a man and machine in perfect harmony. @Watteau - perfect execution as sweep as ever. Quick as a flash with the banter. Quicker with help when needed. The new lighting poles (hehehehehe) Thanks to one and all. See you soon in the sand.
  12. Hi All, Drive plan - Maleha to Margham and Lisaili. If you are up for this, the plan is to make a whistle stop tour covering Maleha (Fossil Rock) to Faya, Faya to 2nd December, 2nd December through Pink Rock to Big Red and from Big Red to Margham, Margham leads to Lisaili. That's the plan. Where we get to in the time allotted depends 100% on the route, the drivers and the conditions. We will cover truly varied terrain, technical dune complexes and maybe even hit a few tracks. Sounds like a drive for you?
  13. Hi All, Location for start has been added. The EPPCO on the E66 is the last gas station before the drive. Convoy numbers as below. As I have had terrible interference on all my drives recently we will use the NEW CARNITY CHANNEL 10. See you in the morning.
  14. Watteau @Watteau Niki @Niki Ahab Shamaa @Ahab Shamaa Ranjan Das @Ranjan Das Matt.T @Matt.T Alain Canivet-Abikhalil @Alain Canivet-Abikhalil Christopher Assal @Christopher Assal Chinthaka Ruwan @Chinthaka Ruwan Humayun Ghias @Humayun Ghias Great to know we will be getting together tomorrow morning. The drive idea? Start in the dark at Murquab Mosque and make our way through some of the long range dunes on offer and then attack the technical 'light' before we hit the Sheikh Zayed sandway. Last time we made it to here, we could not take full advantage of this Baja section. We will then have the choice to turn into one of the super technical sections that trap the best of drivers or into a complex of dunes that give the chance to sweep and swoop, ridge ride and side slip ... or both. As we get to Qudra, we will make our way to Last Exit, time permitting, through a set of soft dunes where the most adventurous normally do not venture. Or not ... Bottom line, tomorrow morning is about holiday fun. Challenging but not ridiculous, fast but not furious, demanding but not dangerous. @Jeepie and myself are looing forward to seeing you there. Convoy list and start point to be published within the hour.
