  4. It's been a long long time since I was on a drive in AD (except for Liwa - which does not count because that it a special event). As I had to be in AD for meetings this was a great opportunity to leverage my PCR test and support on a drive with @Chaitanya Dwhose drives are always amazingly well planned and exciting. I was not disappointed or let down. This was a great drive, swooping through bowls, soft sand and even some tempting technical sections all in the dark and [because I was at sweep and catching up often] at some speed. As the car was showing signs of being tired, I did not play on Lady Dune - next time. All drivers were incredible. And the lead - wonderful. Looking forward to the next chance to follow. Since I installed my night lights, my car has been termed the rabbit with headlights and the new functionality of being able to isolate and switch on only one set at a time was very helpful and meant that the person sitting on the side of the car was no longer blinded as the side shooters can be turned off.
  5. @Anish S I believe that in the PC (pre covid) days Anish arrived at a legendary drive in Fossil Rock which was probably my first exposure to the stresses and requirements of leading drives. Day turned to night and Anish (with @Veedooshee by his side as always) found the going a little challenging, falling into a pocket and needing some guidance and assistance to get out of the dunes to safety. Wow - what a ride: literally. From that first drive to an Expert in Carnity, leading drives and a part of the leader group. As you'll imagine, I could not be happier for you and delighted to be able to welcome you into the leaders group in the club. It's totally deserved and earned. Our members have a lot to which to look forward in the future, with you at the helm.
  6. Hi Daq, There key issued for a compressor are the speed of inflation and reliability. Look for something that is rated at around 150PSI otherwise it will take a lot of time. Many of us in the club have Chinese built 'Camel' double chamber compressors that you find in Dragon Mart. This should cost around AED 250 depending on your negotiating ability. They are great, until they are not and it's always a gamble. Single chamber compressors are less expensive, but take much longer to inflate. You can pick up a basic one for around AED 150. Don't buy the inflators advertised on Facebook as magic inflators. If it's not attached to your battery during inflation, it's not going to last inflating one tire, never mind 4. From a traditional 4x4 store you will find more expensive compressors that will in the end be more reliable. Top of the range is and ARB https://www.amazon.ae/ARB-CKMTP12-Twin-Compressor-tank/dp/B007KEVN00/ref=asc_df_B007KEVN00/?tag=googleshopp09-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=386279144787&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=12177137606592306946&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1000013&hvtargid=pla-434843921239&psc=1
  7. Dear Absolute Newbies @Nishant Mulani @Saddaquat Tanvir @Aisha S @Abdelhamid Elbasossi thanks for signing up to the Absolute Newbie drive. We will publish the meeting point within a day or two. In the meantime, can you please share with us, the following. Your car. Is is modified in any way? Do you have the required clearance? If there are low hanging spoliers or air dams, there is a risk that they can be damaged so please take this into consideration. How much 4x4 experience do you have? Please share with us if you've been out in the sand before, or if you had any other off road experiences. When did you get your front and back tow hooks inspected last? You'll not be able to drive unless your tow hooks are in good condition, so it's worth getting them checked before any disappointment. Looking forward to seeing you on Friday for the drive. Please also make sure that you watch the instruction videos here in this feed and you that before arriving you understand how to disable your electronic safety devices as far as possible (ABS/EPS/Airbags) and look through the manual to get a good understanding of how your 4x4 gears work.
  8. Post Drive Report Convoy #2 There was a thought at some stages of Saturday morning when I thought that this drive was cursed. Not one, but two leads pulling out due to car problems, 26 drivers arrving to potentially the longest convoy in many a month and then, our angel, @Foxtrot Oscar conveniently being awake and amazingly prepared to come out and lead the convoy at a single minute's notice. There's a reason how and why people are prmoted to marshal in this club. With an exceptionally frustrated @Jeepie by my side we did get under way. As she said herself, she had a plan for the drive (as it was supposed to be her lead and not mine) and I apparently went off plan within around 200 meters of entering the sand. Not having your own vehicle and being a passenger when somesone else is driving 'your' drive is nowhere as much fun. It's been a while since I drove at Pink Rock. I tend to avoid this area because the dunes are normally very heavily used and it's a challenge to find a route that is not covered in cross tracks. Up to Pink Rock itself, we did well to find a lot of virgin sand. We could see glimpses of Convoy #1 in the distance, there were not so many convoys operating in the area and our drive was quite incident free all the way up to the base of Pink Rock. Seeing that our club compatriates were crossing the Rock, we decided to follow suit. I am not sure what was happening inside @Danish Mohammad Pajero that it has problems getting up the hill - and eventually it managed and we were on our way once again. Climbing up through the cross tracks to what has now been named 'Bird Bowl' we saw beautiful birds before swooping down ourselves in the direction Big Red and the slight less Big red dune nearby. There was a point at which I think there was someone did a radio check to make sure that the radios were still working, so slilent and trouble free was the convoy initially as we enjoyed a smooth ride on our way to the bigger dunes. @imranaasghar81 was doing a great job in 2nd lead, @Watteau relaxing in the Raptor will little to do apart from the odd reroute or self recovery and @Arman was doing sterling work at the back. We started to have a few refusals as the soft shifting sand impacted the back markers - totally expected on a drive like this as we approach summer. @Russ even got stuck at one point, much to our and indeed, his surprise: probably an aural relief for Danish. It's hard to pick out anyone from the convoy who was not perfroming exceptionally well. @Abdul Rahman AK, @Nithin Vaidir @Humayun Ghias, @Chris [email protected] @JeromeFJ and @Thomas Varghese were making it all very easy and we all enjoyed the fun of chasing, and being chased by Convoy #2. For me it's a real pelasure knowing that there are club drivers close by on another convoy, doing the same, enjoying themselves and learing their way through a drive. It was also great to have multiple drives over the long break with the same people, so I can see how you react to different challenges. And then, as we got into the higher more challenging dunes, two pop outs and a very difficult FJ stuck in a pocket and we had some receovety work to do. This slowed down progress on the way to big red, but was a great learning experience for all concerned. @Abdul Rahman AK and @JeromeFJ - thanks for the lessons. Once again, we played tag with the 1st convoy. I wish someone could have got a picture of the Raptor moment on the hill with @Dodi Syahdar, @Watteau and @Russ all powering up and down at the same time, the two leadfoot beasts looking like a stereo picture as they misirrored each other. This was great fun and we were all planning to leave the area when suddenly @Thomas Varghese vehicle literally concked out. It turned out the batter was simply exhausted and hd given up the ghost, but meant we had to quickly lead everyone out of the desert and then leave a small group to return to recover the stricken Xterra. Special call outs for the day. @Jeepie sorry you missed out on your lead. @Foxtrot Oscar the saviour of the day and shall now be known as St. Angela @Arman who impressed so much as the sweep @Watteau a wing man that antone would be proud to have on their side @Nabil Bishara well done on your first lead Strangely, this was officially my 50th lead and I have apparently clocked more than 100 drives. Truly, these numbers mean nothing because I continue to learn every time I take a vehicle out into the desert. There's so, so much more than I need to learn and to practice and try to perfect that every drive feels a bit like the first. See you soon in the sand.
  9. Hi Varun, Sorry. We need to limit convoy length. We already added a second drive and both convoys are at their limit.
  10. Just FYI for the future - you can (and should) remove your name yourself. If you go back to the drive you can change your RSVP.
  11. Unfortunately, @Jeepie's Jeep is out of action this weekend. Fortunately, @Chaitanya D has offered to kindly step in and will lead the first convoy. This convoy will use radio channel #1. Everyone on the waitlist has been included. @Rizwan Waheed @Abdul Rahman AK @JeromeFJ @Chris Wing @Humayun Ghias @Watteau @Russ @Danish Mohammad @Nithin Vaidir @Matt.T @Thomas Varghese @Arman See you soon in the sand.

  13. @Thomas Varghese @Xavier Treasurer @Matt.T @Lakshmi Narasimhan @Watteau @JeromeFJ @Batuhan Kulac @Gok Krish @Wrangeld @Jeandre Bezuidenhout @Jeepie Post Drive Report Wow, the summer heat has such an impact on the softness of the sand. After a day of the sun beating down, the sand retains a lot of heat and this makes the sand soft, more pliable, later in the day. Not that the drive had an unusually high number of stucks or refusals, or that any of them were unexpected (last time I did this drive one of our vehicles literally ended up on two wheels) and we did have a long, long period in the drive where we just ... drove! I like a drive that has the shift from day to night. It makes the second part of the drive more 'different'. As a few of the drivers remarked, the same sand somehow feels more ... sandy ... in the dark. The lights following each other as we snake through the dunes showing our train making it's way past unsuspecting campers or those simply terrified we did not notice them is wonderful site to see (perhaps you understand now why I sometimes indulge myself and snake back to see the convoy. . What we did practice, a lot was criss-crossing. For anyone with aspirations towards promotion, along with the ability to self recover, safely crossing from one side of a dune to the other is an essential skill. Perhaps your ridge riding needs refining, but you simply cannot keep up with a convoy if you cannot follow it over the crests. Everyone did really well here: I cannot recall one incidence of someone crested while crossing - quite exceptional. I'm going to sign off on this post with a request. It's a general one, but also specific to some of the behaviour on the drive. Give drivers the time to self recover. Undoubtedly, it is wonderful that there is such enthusiasm to help tug drivers out of their stucks, but that's not always helpful to them. Sometimes, a driver at this level and above just needs a moment and a bit of quiet to work out the best way to drive their vehicle out of trouble. We need to respect that if someone wants to try to drive out of a refusal or stuck (or wants assistance digging) we have to let them have this chance. I wrote this a few weeks ago. The recovery hierarchy is Drive, Dig, Rope, Winch, Helicopter. There is absolutely no need to propose a tug as soon as someone looks stuck. Yes, it might be the case that from your perspective that they cannot drive out, but maybe, just maybe they want to try before you pull them out. Perhaps it means that you are sitting waiting, but all drivers need these learning moments, and we do them no favours at all by pressurizing them into feeling that the convoy is being held up and that you know a quicker way to get them out, 'so we can get driving again'. Finally, a massive thanks to @Jeepie, sweeping, swooping and solving problems all drive long and @Watteau, perhaps not the busiest of drives to support, but where you did, once again, impeccable. Thanks also to @Thomas Varghese for your great second lead - making the adjustments when needed and advising of potential pit and pratfalls. See you soon in the sand p.s. @Lakshmi Narasimhan - hope you remembered to put that relay back in place. p.p.s. @Jeepie Jeep is a little sick, but we did successfully get it taken to the car hospital, where after the necessary triage, I am sure it will soon be back on the road (and sand).
  14. Looking forward to seeing you too this evening. We have a great convoy full of fun and as you said, familiar faces.
  15. Post Drive Report Seems my last radio message was not heard today, so I will set it out here. SWB does allow us to go play in areas that otherwise are a real challenge with a 'longer' convoy. There is a reason that the sands on which we drove today were so pristine. And the tolerances are small. With just a few inches more wheelbase, our MWB found the going tougher. The sand was horribly soft (as I found to my own cost more than a few times), but with the SWB vehicles, we managed to explore some amazing and extremely complex dunes. For that I am really grateful - so thanks to all of you for signing up and letting me lead through an area of Qudra that I so rarely get to see. For the rest. I guess the areas we traversed gave more opportunities for criss-crossing than ridge riding. I tried to mix it up a little between breaking over crests from the slip side and the hard side and getting onto a ridge and then coming down. Everyone did really well here. At the back of the convoy it was heavily churned so must have been a bit more difficult to get through some of them. What I felt was that it was a flowing drive punctuated by some stucks that took time to resolve: not overly time consuming, but just because we flowed so nicely when we did these stops felt to be taking up time. I'm not going to give specific driver feedback because I think that everyone did exceptionally well considering the terrain. Massive thanks to you all for the teamwork and patience. Special thanks to @Kailas and @Jeepie for keeping me almost completely sand free! See you soon in the sand.
  16. Like I said Chris, the FJ is a pretender! We will still let you in and maybe we can all learn something by having the MWB imposter amongst us.
  17. Hi All, The convoy positions for the twilight drive. We will use radio channel #1. @Thomas Varghese @Xavier Treasurer @Matt.T @Lakshmi Narasimhan @Watteau @JeromeFJ @Batuhan Kulac @Gok Krish @Jeandre Bezuidenhout @Jeepie It's a nice mix of experienced Fewbies and Intermediates which should let us have some fun running through one of the areas great possibilities for fun. As night approaches, we will decide where we go, based on the convoy. For anyone that did not yet drive at night, street lights will be OK if you are following. What we did find quite useful recently is an LED on your flagpole. Other than that (and posting the start point, which I will do shortly), looking forward to a great drive. See you soon in the sand.
  18. Good morning everyone. We will be out of the desert by this time tomorrow (hopefully), so it's time to set the radio channel at #1 and the convoy numbering. This will be: Wrangeld (me) Goutam @Goutam Chris Wing @Chris Wing Nathan Evans @Nathan Evans Kailas @Kailas Pacific @Pacific Jeandre Bezuidenhout @Jeandre Bezuidenhout Mario Cornejo @Mario Cornejo I've changed the start location to Bab Al Shams because we can find practice dunes more easily from there - and then can see where the route takes us. I'd like to think we can venture into some very challenging technical areas and some areas that are technically challenging (there is a difference) as well, which are close by. See you soon in the sand.
  19. @Xavier Treasurer Apologies for the confusion - you are back in this drive if you still want to join. Based on feedback from the leads on Abu Dhabi drives, you will be more than capable of adapting to a Dubai Fewbie Plus. Please confirm this is OK.
  20. Nightriders Watteau @Watteau Gok Krish @Gok Krish Matt.T @Matt.T topgear @topgear Xavier Treasurer @Xavier Treasurer Jeandre Bezuidenhout @Jeandre Bezuidenhout Thomas Varghese @Thomas Varghese JeromeFJ @JeromeFJ Batuhan Kulac @Batuhan Kulac Lakshmi Narasimhan @Lakshmi Narasimhan Good morning. Great you signed up for the twilight drive. What to Expect? From Lisaili we will cover technical lite dunes until we hit the wide dunes on the way to Solar Park/Al Qudra watching the sun set along the way. As it gets dark we will turn on our lights (off road lights are not compulsory) and drive back into Last Exit, or as close as we can get that leave time for us all to go out and enjoy a little bit of the Eid atmosphere after the drive. If you think you might not be able to come, having signed up, please sign out as early as possible. It makes drive planning a bit easier. See you soon in the sand.
  21. Mario Cornejo @Mario Cornejo (Nissan Patrol SWB) [Intermediate] Pacific @Pacific (Jeep Wrangler SWB) [Fewbie] Chris Wing @Chris Wing (Toyota FJ Cruiser) [Fewbie] Nathan Evans @Nathan Evans (Suzuki Jimny) [Fewbie] Jeandre Bezuidenhout @Jeandre Bezuidenhout (Jeep Wrangler SWB) [Intermediate] Thanks for signing up for the SWB drive. @Chris Wing ... The FJ is not a borderline SWB. At 106" it is an MWB, but as you've signed up let's leave it at that for the moment. If the numbers stay at this level, we will use the drive to focus on the following: Ridge riding - we will start at the basics, small low dunes and build up from there as far as the terrain will allow. Criss-crossing - in both directions, i.e. hard face approach and slip face approach. Technical dunes & soft sand - to understand the advantages of the smaller wheelbase. This implies we will not be looking to find long dunes for slide sloping or climbs. If there is something else that you want to add, please use this forum. I am more than happy to try and use the session for us all to learn as much as we can. As you appreciate, I want to use the time to learn/hone skills. If your expectation is different, then it's no problem if you decide that there's a better option over the week that satisfies your adrenalin or other wishes. I will say that if we fall below a 4 car drive, the drive will be cancelled. As a favour to your fellow drivers, and knowing that there is space on other drives this week, if you are in doubt, please make your decision early. The last ting we want is for too few drivers to turn up at the start finding that someone changed their mind. See you soon in the sand.
  22. THE SHORT WHEEL BASE FOCUS DRIVE In most club convoys there is a mix of vehicles, some nimble small, light cars and at the back of the pack, the leviathans: Patrols, Raptors, F150s, Prados and LWB versions of some of the most popular cars. What would it be like to focus just on the SWB vehicles in the club? A chance to focus on what it's like for the SWB to criss-cross, ridge ride and navigate the small tight dunes and soft sand? In this drive we will try to make the most of our better entry and exit angles and investigate how to drive so that the higher risk of roll-over (especially in lifted cars) is minimized. This drive is limited to cars with a wheelbase of 98" - tape measure will be brought out to check if necessary! This drive is organized in full compliance with the COVID19 guidelines. We expect every member that joins this drive to go through below information and and strictly follow these guidelines in order not to jeopardize someone's health, and to ensure we can keep organizing these drives safely.
