Dear Sand Warriors! @RAKIN KURIAKOSE @DANIEL NOGUEIRA @Hardik Mody @Anvar Sadath Bekal @syed salman raza @Sharooq Fassul @Mahmoud Asar @Sandi88 @Probir Mukherjee @Sai Baskaran Thanks for signing up to the PM desert drive in Qudra on Thursday! - Yes, you read it right, Thursday. A long holiday weekend means we get to drive on Thursday and hope that the sand will not be too crowded. What to expect from this drive? A lot of crossing from one dune to another. We will take the chance to practice making out way over the crests of dunes. We will do this straight up and start learnign some of the techniques of criss crossing and ridge crossing on some very small dunes. What is expected of you on this drive? Team work, patience, commitment and courage (just a little bit). The lanscape is quite forgiving for the most part with wide dunes spread out but there are soem technical areas that are much more difficult and require developed skills in the sand to overcome. ALSO - I intended to post this as a compressor only drive to give us the flexibility on start and finish point. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A COMPRESSOR, PLEASE LET ME KNOW IN THE TOPIC THREAD. Looking forward to lots of fun in the sand on Thursday.

@Sandi88 @syed salman raza Thanks for signing up for the Newbie drive on Thursday afternoon. As you probably saw in the WhatsApp notification, we want to make sure as many people can drive as possible with Carnity and limit the sign up to one drive per weekend from Sunday to Wednesday. It looks like you signed up for this drive and also the other Qudra Newbie drive with @Ale Vallecchi on 31 Oct AM. For the moment, we need you to make a choice of one or the other and sign out of either this drive or sign out of the Saturday morning drive. On Tuesday evening, we will know if there are spaces available for members that want to drive two times or have multiple sign up for drives and the lists will open again with any open spots. Thanks in advance for your cooperation. We know that everyone wants to get as much experience as possible. See you soon in the sand.

The Margham Loop Exploration Anyone driving with navigation software woould have to agree that we did loop today. For that, no apologies. A new newbie territory, where few have driven before (did you notice that there were not so many cross tracks here), surrounded by challenging technical dunes required a certain type of drive where we could practice (as promised) dune crossing, dune driving, climbing, descending and navigating pockets of soft and slipping sand. So there was a lot of spaghetti on the map and a concentration on one particular area of dunes (approaching it from different sides) so we could practice all these basic techniques. For the more experienced drivers, close to Fewbie status, the drive should have been just a little but 'boring' - so they could finesse theier skills and get themselves ready for the next level. For the new newbies, this should have been that little but more challenging than the Absolute Newbie drive, because you had to sort out problems yourself, or get assistance to sort them out. It did feel a bit like a Jeep convention at the start of the drive, the Pajeros, FJ cruisers and Land Rover/Cruiser felt a bit like we were barging in on their day, but the mix of vehicles was good, because it shows once again, that even though the Jeep is in an incredible machine, it's not just the machine that makes the driver. @Yasas Dharmadasa first time 2nd lead, and I am afraid, you paid the price a bit for that. One moment of lack of concentration and a little too much speed ... I hope that the garage can put all of those pieces back into place in the right order. New challenges await once you get the car back together. @DANIEL NOGUEIRA you really have that beast under control and drive really flawlessly today. Watch out for the more technical dunes in the future challenges. All that power is great to get you up and over and through most things ... except for the tigh technical dunes. @Arda Yagcioglu one of those for whom the next level is calling. You have the basics well under control, that's clear. @Gaurav Soni the LWB Pajero is a great machine, especially when it has been 'chip fixed' like yours. You need to use the power under your foot more judiciously understanding when to use more and when to utilise what is available. @Ahab Shamaa I think you really felt that the tension of not knowing if you were going to make it onto the drive was worthwhile by the end. Great drive today. You really are starting to understand the power and potential of the FJ. @Athula Dharmadada Please remember that sometimes you need to to hold back your enthusiasm when on a drive. Having a tool like the Jeep gives a great feeling of confidence, and your driving shows this. Apart from that, great performance today. @Manjinder Singh our late late convoy partner! I am delighted you made it. Considering how many drives you have under your belt, the control you show in the FJ is admirable. Soem decent receoveries today under guidance. @Nithin Vaidir sorry you lost the front of the bumper today. We try, but can never guarantee that the vehicle comes out of the desert unscathed. Apart from that the control you ae showing with the LC is good. Hope that the family enjoyed the trip as much as you. @Karthik Krishnakumar you are getting more and more to grips with the car on each drive - watch your braking, watch your power delivery. You have every reason to be confident after your earlier drives. @Goutam our second yellow SWB Jeep - it's never easy driving at the end of a long convoy and the recovery we did together out of the soft sand hopefully shows you no matter where you end up you can be recovered. @Archibald Jurdi excellent job with the manual TJ, especially as you were at the back with some churned up tracks. You are really imporoving drive after drive. @Jeepie as ever impeccable. Thanks for doing a brilliant job keeping us all under control, sorting out the stucks and getting me out of trouble a few times. @Wrangeld a good newbie lead, that offered challenges to the new newbies and meant that we were not standing waiting for too long. Nice big play dunes and soem good practice - be careful of stopping on soft sand and getting stuck! Thanks everyone for your iinput. Looking forward to seeing you all in the sand again soon.

Family always comes first and yes, I think I heard that line before (never from Jeepie !!!) and know exactly what it means. Hi @Yusuf Esaf I think that the chaces of Manjinder slipping out are limited, but there may be other drop outs before the end of the evening. Please keep looking through to around 10pm - for some reason there are people not paying attention until the last minute and then realising that they have other plans. Rest assured that if we have another drop out, you are the next in line (not that we wish bad on anyone in the club ...) Thank you for your understanding. It is appreciated.

As explained Manjinder, I would have loved to have been able to add you to the drive. I understand fully that you would have asked me to make an exception 'just' for you. The problem with that is that there are many people for whom we would then have to make an exception 'just' for them. I promise to look out for your name on future drives. Your lucky day Manjinder. @Manjinder Singh you are confirmed because a place became free. I am making the changes now.

@Yusuf Esaf @Manjinder Singh @Sai Baskaran A special word for you. I understand how frustrating it is not to get on a drive - it's all you want to do on a Friday. We aim as a team to add as many drives as we can to accommodate everyone that wants to drive and if we could be in two places at the same time we would be. Sdaly, you missed out this week, but more drives will be posted at 7.10 pm next week. As Marshals, safety is our key concern and knowing the terrain on this drive and the fact that it is an exploration, we cannot take the risks associated with adding more drivers. One or two increases the convoy by 100 - 200 meters and potentially adds 30 - 60 minutes on the drive.

Dear Desert Drivers Here is the final convoy list for tomorrow's drive in Margham Morning Newbie Desert Drive Margham 23 Oct 2020 Attendees Level Car Pos # Wrangeld Marshal Mitsubishi Pajero SWB 1 Lead Yasas Dharmadasa Fewbie Jeep Wrangler LWB 2 2nd lead Daniel Noguiera Newbie Dodge RAM 1500 3 Arda Yagcioglu Newbie Landrover LR2 4 Gaurav Soni Newbie Mitsubishi Pajero LWB 5 Ahab Shamaa Newbie Toyota FJ Cruiser 6 Athula Dharmadada Newbie Jeep Wrangler LWB 7 Kaushal Prithwani Newbie Nissan Super Safari SWB 8 Vijay Sekhar Newbie Jeep Wrangler LWB 9 Nithin Vaidir Newbie Toyota Landcruiser Prado 10 Karthik Krishnakumar Newbie Jeep Wrangler SWB 11 Goutam Newbie Jeep Wrangler SWB 12 Archibald Jurdi Newbie Jeep Wrangler SWB TJ 13 Jeepie Expert Jeep Wrangler 14 SW This will disappoint a number of people on the waitlist. @Yasas Dharmadasa @DANIEL NOGUEIRA @Arda Yagcioglu @Gaurav Soni @Ahab Shamaa @Athula Dharmadada @Kaushal Prithwani @Vijaysekhar @Karthik Krishnakumar @Goutam @Archibald Jurdi you are the lucky ones. Because there was such a long waitlist, please do not embarass either us our yourself by not turning up at the drive on time (6 am) tomorrow morning. myself and @Jeepie will be the seniors on duty. If you have any questions when tou arrive, please let us know. You MUST have with you: Working and programmed radio Off road flag Shovel Spare tire in good condition Working compressor and airline for reinflation We will also be checking that your vehicles have proper and good condition tow points at the front and rear of the car. When you arrive, please deflate (12- 15PSI) and put up your offroad flag and put your vehicle in 4H. Radio channel will be Carnity channel number 1. An explantion for the disappointed drivers. For safety reasons we could not extend the drive list this week. We set drive limits with the mind set to get as many people out into the sand as possible. On this drive we have only two senior Carnity members and as such we cannot risk more cars in the convoy because everyone except the second lead is a newbie. A 14 car convoy will mean that the front and back cars can be as much as 1km apart. For those that are on the drive - bring your A game. We will challenge you tomorrow morning with new experiences, types of dunes, types of inclines and declines and dune crossing. Looking forward to an excellent drive tomorrow. See you soon in the sand.

Congrats @Chaitanya D. Lots more to come from you. -
Dear Margham Marauders, I wanted to take a few minutes of your time to give a little more explanation about what to expect on the drive on Friday. I am including the names of all the waitlisted drivers as well (not to 'punish' them, but because we believe we will find a solution to the waitlist.) @DANIEL NOGUEIRA @SyedObaid @Yasas Dharmadasa @Nithin Vaidir @Goutam @Gaurav Soni @Athula Dharmadada @Archibald Jurdi @Karthik Krishnakumar @Kaushal Prithwani @Arda Yagcioglu @Vijaysekhar @Ahab Shamaa @Manjinder Singh @Mohamed Abo ElKomsan @Yusuf Esaf An exploration is just what it seems. In some areas we hold drives, we know the terrain very well and have visited many many times. Margham is a new territory for Carnity and we did not yet take Newbies there. An exploration means that as the drive lead I need to find the right tracks for the level of drivers, and the drivers need to expect that the route might not be as simple as on other drives. You will find some parts of the drive more difficult. We will find all the great dunes on which to practice and hone your skills. Exploration is normally slower and more careful. Because we do not know the 'way' we take more care in an exploration. Having said that, I know a few areas in this terrain (due to my previous explorations) where there are great dunes for playing and experiementing safely - so don't worry that we will not have a lot of fun. Who knows where we will end up? I get that this might seem like I do not know where we are headed. Truth is that the landscape here has a number of options we can chose and if the convoy handles it well we can change our destination based on how well we all perfom. There are multiple entry and exit points that can be chosen. We could end up where we started, or we could end up finding our way (exploring) to somewhere else. Teamwork will be absolutely key. Most of the drivers on this drive are not experienced, and have not done much in the way of self recovery from being stuck in the sand. For this reason, we have experienced members who come along to help. Having said that we are all responsible for each other. That might be sitting patiently in your car while we recover someone, that might be being asked to help in a recovery. Or it could simply be that you follow all the instructions perfectly and make the drive easier for other people. I am looking forward to the drive on Friday becuase it will be a new experience - and that's what this hobby is all about. Challenging ourselves. Do make sure that you bring your A game to the desert. You will need it. See you soon in the sand.

Hi @Manjinder Singh ... it's a big question every week about how we can accommodate the wishes of so many committed drivers. At one level, yes, the easy solution is to say we open up the drives to as many people as sign up. The challenge we then have is two fold. (probably more, but let's start with these two). The first is safety. With a 15 car convoy, the front and back of the convoy are a long way from each other and the experience of the front of the convoy can be very, very different to the back. At the front, you drive on nice freshly created takcs for you by the drive lead and drive at a very leasurely pace. At the back, you are looking for a clean track that has not been churned up by the cars in front and having to drive much faster to keep up (concertina effect) so it's a bit of a race to keep up and deal with the sand. The second is simply the potential enjoyment of the convoy has a correlation with the amount of stucks and refusals. If you add 5 more cars, you increase exponentially the chances of delays due to problems. As drive leads, we love managing recoveries because we learn a lot from it as does the driver being recovered. If, however, you are 500 meters away in a different part of the convoy sitting patiently waiting, eventually, when that happens 5, 6 or ten times, it becomes a little less fun. I am all for getting as many people out into the sand as possible. It is one of the ultimate most liberating hobbies I know, so I understand 100% that you want to be out there. The challenge on this drive in particular is that for the first time, we are exploring with Newbies. That means that there may be more stucks and refusals than ususal. If everyone on the drive is OK with the risk that it lasts till 12.00 or beyond, then maybe we can extend the numbers - but I hope you see the dilemma. It's not that we do not want to add more drivers, it's that we have to tink about how do we manage all those drivers. If the drive is without incident, that's great. If there's a problem. Less so. I am open to any ideas or suggestions you might have.
