Please read carefully before you join this drive: Dune Surfers! This is an Adventure into the Unknown — a journey for those who truly love exploration, discovery, and the raw beauty of the desert. This weekend we embark on a exploration and recce drive in the Al Wagan region of Abu Dhabi, one of the most remote and least-explored desert areas in the UAE. Expect a long, tiring, and unpredictable adventure — this is not a regular weekend drive. The objective is to explore new routes, identify terrain characteristics, and locate access paths for future offroad drives. We will attempt to reach and explore the famous Star Dunes — rare natural sand formations that are truly breathtaking. Note: This drive may involve dead ends, fences, or sandstorms — we will adapt and navigate as a team. About the Star Dunes Star dunes are among the most spectacular and rare desert formations. They form when winds blow consistently from three or more directions, creating radially symmetrical, pyramid-like mounds with multiple arms radiating from a central peak. Unlike other dunes, star dunes do not migrate but grow vertically, making them some of the tallest and most stable dunes on Earth — a sight worth every challenge getting there! Participation Criteria To join this drive, participants must meet the following criteria: Completed at least one Intermediate drive in the past 3 months Have been actively off-roading in the past 1 month Fully equipped 4x4 in excellent condition This is a remote area, and recoveries or breakdowns could become serious safety concerns. Only well-prepared and experienced drivers should join. Pre-Drive Vehicle Checks Please ensure your vehicle is in perfect mechanical condition before the drive. It is strongly advised to: Take your car for a complete inspection to identify and fix hidden issues Check your spare tire (pressure and tread condition) Verify you have the necessary tools and jack to replace it if needed. Extra Fuel Jerry Cans ( 20 liters ) This region is extremely remote, and towing or recovery to a service track may not be possible in some situations. Prevention is your best safeguard. Sultans of Swing! < PLEASE READ CAREFULLY> Every desert has its rhythm — the smooth arcs of the dunes, the steady beat of the engine, and the graceful curves of side slopes. This Saturday, we’re turning the desert into a grand stage for the Sultan of Swings. This Intermediate-level drive will focus on flow, balance, and controlled swings across dune faces. Think of it as dancing with the desert — connecting one move into the next, keeping momentum alive, and finding that sweet spot between power and precision. What to Expect Long flowing side slopes with smooth transitions. Controlled criss-crosses and sweeping bowl work. Focus on convoy spacing and flow discipline. Practice reading dune lines and linking multiple moves. Brisk pace designed to challenge Intermediates. This is a session for drivers who are ready to break away from mechanical dune bashing and step into the art of dune swinging. The desert is your dance floor — and this Saturday, you are the Sultan. For the First/Second time / Long gap Intermediate drivers: buckle up, because the desert just changed its rules. At Fewbie / Fewbie + , the dunes smiled at you. At Intermediate, they test you. Expect longer slopes, sharper ridges, and bowls that swallow hesitation whole. This is not the time for panic braking, last-minute steering, or “oops I’ll just try it again.” You’ll need: Confidence to commit once you’re in the swing. Discipline to hold the line (no zig-zag rescues). Patience to wait your turn and respect convoy flow. If you bring fear, the dunes will find it. If you bring focus, they’ll reward you. Remember: Intermediate is where the fun begins, but also where mistakes bite harder. Bring your A-game, your recovery gear, and your coolest head. We request every member who joins this drive to go through the information below and strictly follow these guidelines, etiquette, and responsibilities. DRIVE DESCRIPTION Dune Surfers! Not every battle in the dunes is about climbing high and charging hard. Sometimes, the real skill lies in moving quietly, steadily, and with precision — just like a submarine navigating deep waters. In this Skill Drive Series session, we take inspiration from "The Hunt for Red October" and focus on one of the most important off-road techniques: side sloping. As Captain Ramius said: “Most things in here don’t react well to bullets.” In the desert, most dunes don’t react well to brute force. Instead, they demand patience, control, and respect. Side sloping is the desert equivalent of running silent — holding your line on the face of a dune with calm control, steady throttle, and perfect balance. “A little revolution now and then is a healthy thing, don’t you think?” This time, the revolution is changing how you think about driving: less power, more finesse. It’s a skill that builds confidence, teaches respect for the terrain, and prepares you for more advanced drives ahead. The challenge (and the fun!) will be to master smooth entries, steady positioning, and graceful exits from dune faces — no jerky corrections, no panic moves — just controlled, confident gliding along the sand walls. Or in Ramius’ words: “Once more, we play our dangerous game… a game of desert and dunes.” we will start from the 2nd December cafe making our way eventually to the BIG RED!!! We will do a point - to - point straight line challenge drive during the drive as a secondary challenge! What to Expect Practicing safe and controlled side sloping on different dune sizes. Learning how to enter, hold, and exit a slope with stability. Building confidence in throttle, steering, and momentum control. Understanding recovery techniques in case of slide-outs or misalignment. This drive is designed as a fun, confidence-building session where patience and precision are the true skills — and the most important thing to bring is a cool head and steady hands. DRIVE DESCRIPTION Dune Surfers! Why roar at 6000 when 2000 gets the job done? In most of our desert drives, we push our cars hard — high revs, 6000 RPM climbs, and squeezing every ounce of horsepower to conquer tall dunes. But raw power isn’t the only way to master the desert. This drive is about a different skill altogether: harnessing the sweet spot of torque. For most 4x4s, the 2000–2500 RPM range is where the engine delivers maximum usable torque. This means more pulling power, smoother delivery, and less wheel spin — exactly what we need in soft sand and technical terrains. By staying in this range, we’ll learn to let the car’s torque do the work, instead of just hammering the throttle. The challenge (and the fun!) will be to navigate the desert consciously at low RPM — no wild revving, no screaming engines — just smooth, steady momentum. We’ll mix in some technical patches, dune approaches, and controlled climbs, all at a measured pace. What to Expect Practicing torque-based driving in the 2000–2500 RPM band. Navigating dunes and technical terrain with smooth throttle inputs (without over-revving) Building patience, throttle control, and torque awareness. Discovering how steady momentum often beats raw speed. This drive is intended for a fun, confidence-building session where patience is the real skill and the most important thing to bring along is willingness to challenge your habits and enjoy a new driving style. Trip Report – SDS : Criss Cross Country @B.K. @nithish468 @Jose Luis Campos @Zulfikhar Naiyar @Sam Selim @Cesar Chacon We kicked off the drive sharp at 6:00 a.m. under perfect desert weather. Having camped the night before, I got to enjoy the cool late-night breeze at the starting point – a refreshing way to begin the day. After a quick pre-drive briefing to explain the theme and objectives, we set off with a short warm-up session. The dunes had no existing tracks, and the ridges were sharp, so we started small, practicing ridge approaches and getting a feel for the terrain. About 45 minutes in, we paused for a quick review session. Here, we revisited the basics of ridge crossing: analyzing the ridge, planning the approach, maintaining the right speed, and executing the crisscross. This helped align everyone before we moved on to the more demanding sections. Soon after, we found a perfect practice area with beautifully curved ridges, ideal for multiple crisscross attempts. we experimented with different speeds and entry points, and while there were a few refusals and mis attempts, everyone eventually got it right. This was the highlight of the drive – watching confidence build with every successful crossing. From there, we advanced to higher ridges for more challenging ridge riding. The convoy handled it well, and once we had our fill of ridge play, we faced a choice: head towards Nagra Dunes or take a straight-line route back. With about an hour left, we opted for the direct return path through the least resistance, making steady progress back to our starting point. A big thanks to @Zulfikhar Naiyar for his support, Rock solid in the sweep, and to @Cesar Chacon for holding the convoy strong at the back, stepping in with guidance during a few refusals and keeping the line intact. Congratulations to @Jose Luis Campos for an excellent second lead – following tracks precisely, maintaining perfect distance, and handling the role impressively. There were a couple of moments where both Luis and I got stuck, but quick and effective self-recoveries got us moving again. Impressively, we never had to use a rope or shovel at all for the entire drive. Very well driven by @Sam Selim and @B.K.with no hesitations and smooth lines. it was pleasure to watch you guys make those moves! Kudos to @nithish468 for keeping his spirits and confidence up. He deserves a special mention. In previous drives, he was hesitant with the throttle, but today we saw him really push himself. At first, there were some fishtails and re-attempts, but with strong support from the convoy and his own determination, he managed clean ridge crossings. It was great to see his confidence grow – an important step towards handling higher-paced intermediate drives where these maneuvers become second nature. All in all, it was a brilliant crisscrossing session – a balance of learning, fun, and teamwork. Ridge crossing is one of the most essential skills for progressing into higher-level drives, and today’s practice was a solid foundation for that journey. Proud of the entire convoy and looking forward to the next Skill Drive!!

Dune Surfers! @khlief @B.K. @nithish468 @Jose Luis Campos @Zulfikhar Naiyar @Sam Selim @Cesar Chacon @Sunstreaker RSVP is now closed! Welcome to the criss cross country! Our drive plan is simple yet demanding.. at the FB+ you are expected to take our skills one step higher — and this drive is designed exactly for that. The theme of this ride is crisscrossing over high desert sand ridges with confidence and control. We will begin by building up slowly, practicing controlled approaches to ridge climbs, getting onto the ridge, and crossing over to the other side at reasonable speeds. As we progress, the pace will gradually increase, testing both your skill and focus. This is going to be a high-paced drive, demanding clear attention and quick decision-making from every driver. The aim is to make you not just comfortable, but also confident in handling ridge crossings as a natural part of your desert driving journey. what you should expect: 1. Step-by-step buildup to ridge crossing techniques. 2. Multiple crisscross attempts over high mounts. 3. Gradual transition into a fast-paced, demanding drive. 4. On-the-spot discussions and learning during the briefing. Our meeting point is : https://maps.app.goo.gl/FpswfwqdxYX4z3Bh7 just behind the NAHEL ADNOC station. you can reach me on 0585827986 for any urgent matters. I completely understand that plans can change, but I do request everyone to sign up only when you are reasonably sure about joining. Last-minute dropouts affect convoy planning and the overall drive dynamics. Let’s try to keep our commitments strong so that the spirit of the group and the flow of the drive remain intact. Looking forward to seeing you on the sand tomorrow morning! I will post the convoy early morning with one certainty!.. @Jose Luis Campos you are my second lead!
