Incorrect @desertdude. We've been in some nasty bowl in places close to Dubai and Sharjah with no mobile coverage Etisalat or Du. Always dicey to go out alone.

Then you just climb to the nearest dune. We had no reception in our campsites but all you have to do was walk up and viola full reception.

Good share, but I will never recommend to go out to desert alone. If you're stuck in an area without mobile coverage your app will not work.

Hence always carry a Etisalat sim with you 95% of the UAE is covered. Save for some western border area with Saudi towards Arad

  3. Once you are able to buy one of the regular Rolls Royce Bentleys Lambos, Ferraris and other exotics anything above is just showing off look how much more money I have to waste.

Look you cheap peasent I paid half a million more for the Ultra Sport Super Special GT XWB  MZD FEK ASS DIK 1 of 20 version ( later which 2000 more will be made due to demand ) which weighs 50 grams less by using super rare ultra light metal harvested from crashed meteorites from the bottom of the Mariana trench for the door handles and now it goes from 0 to 100 in 0.005th of a second faster than the regular version.

Not to mention the killing the car manufacturers make by selling these to rich idiots

Thanks for sharing the experiences and details. I wanted to ask if I change the bumper of my nissan patrol (y62) to a off road bumper ( made of fiber, not metal) does it

    1. Void the insurance and warranty

    2. Will there be any problem in re - registration every year.

Please reply so that I and all new drivers are aware before doing any modifications.

Please share any other information which will be helpful.

    Thanks in advance

My Question is Who makes fiber off road bumpers?

  5. Just like the FJ I'm not a big fan of the visibility problem for both of them from inside. High hip line and low roof make them look cool on the outside but impede visibility inside out hence decreasing situational and terrain awareness.

Other than that. Once you learn to how drive in the dunes you can pretty much drive anything without too much hassle.

Unless your only metric for measuring performance is how high your car will climb faya

  6. I would avoid the 4.5 and you'll know why I said that once you test drive a 4.8 VTC engined patrol. It's like night and day. The 4.8 is like a Thoroughbred while the 4.5 is like a lathargic mule.

Other than that if the price is right car is well maintained you know the owner blah blah 355k is high but doesn't mean it's about to croak. You can easily stretch them to 6-700k if you look after them well.

But only if the price is right. I wouldn't pay a dime over 20 for it in pristine condition, preferably 15.

Walk away if it was some shababs joyride who like to hit the limiter just to buzz the neighborhood and drive on two wheels over the weekend or was a weekly contestant at the pissing contest held at big red, fayha etc etc.

Ideal case a buddy one expat owner from new who spent huge amount of $$$$$$ on the car regularly so on and so forth.

What I understood is that with bigger tyres  the normal wheel balancing is not useful. You need to balance the wheels without removing them. In Arabic they call it 'Mizanaya Arzi".

I have had to get this done for my XJ to solve vibration issues at above 100 kmph. But I have got them done in Sharjah

Which literally means Earth or ground balancing otherwise know as road force balancing

Btw has anyone ever tried bead balancing? It been around for ages and supposed to work brilliantly and automatically adjust as the tyre gets older and worn.

  8. 99% of the shops don't even know how to install tyres properly on rims.

Those blue red lines you see on the tread of a new tyres and the red and yellow dots on the face are there for a reason.

Go ask any tyre shop what they mean and I bet they won't be able to answer

Isn't that we all are using this naturally.....? Haven't seen anyone communicating on radio while doing sidey.....!

But you have seen people talking on the phone while driving. Most probably when you see a car cut 6 lanes 0.5 meters from the exit at 160 kph is because of such.

I never surprises me how uncommon is common sense.

  10. First of all I disagree it's a basic requirement, anyway that's a whole other story

Why not just follow the rules of aviation

    Aviate, navigate and communicate.

    Communication being the last priority.

So modify it to your own situation.

Driving the car and being safe takes first priority.

If you are doing a climb or tackling a sidey and you get a radio call. What ever it is. It isn't that important that you have to respond immediately even if that means putting yourself in danger and even risking harm to yourself and others.

Concentrate on the task ahead, finish it and only when it's safe to do so. Respond to the radio.

I know most people think when they get a telephone call ( Or in this case radio call )it has to be answered immediately. Regardless of what situation you are in whether you are sleeping or trying to navigate a tricky roundabout in heavy traffic as if God himself is calling and you cannot risk his wrath

Mustang and Subaru: Creative way to do things differently, when money is not a barrier.

Liwa has always been love since the first time I went there somewhere in 2002 or 3.

My most memorable moment till today was the 15 days I spent in Liwa.

You know I've never been a fan of the regular sandboxes anyways.

Guys , thanks for all the inputs you shared in this topic. Very helpful.  Me too has been hunting for a capable 4X4 vehicle for the next drive. I got a friend's advice to go for Nissan Xterra. For it's good Off road performance and also comfortable for city driving.

do you think he is right? i haven't driven as X Terra yet.

Then first thing to do is actually drive it so see even if you like it or not
