The first step in off-roading is to know how to drive in the desert. The second step is to know which lines to follow, match to an inch with perfection. Lines are everything in the sand, inch wrong line and you will still struggle with most cars. Watch every move of the lead car carefully and make a conscious effort to match those lines. If you can't make a second or third attempt until you perfectly match those lines. Try this first in the next few drives, and then decide whether to change the car or not.

What Was Your Most ‘Oh No’ Moment in the Desert?

Something similar, I use as my disclaimer after every Masterclass. Deflate your tires, Deflate your ego. Guaranteed way to go back in the same car with a smile on your face. -
What Was Your Most ‘Oh No’ Moment in the Desert?
Gaurav replied to Mike M.'s topic in Off-Road Club's Discussions
Perfectly well stated, as a learning lesson for all leads, stick to the plan and go for another attempt if in two minds. The exit line was brutally covered in tons of super soft powdery sand, losing all power instantly, no matter how I tried with or without center diff-lock, 2nd gear, even in Lo with 3&4 gear. After multiple attempts, we even tried to cool off the car, but still, I couldn't beat the soft patch on the incline; it was like climbing up the slip face. Last resort TEAMWORK (always shine bright). Pajero_in_a_bowl.mp4.c401c62411349770d28e87f1627b4f9c.mp4 -

What Was Your Most ‘Oh No’ Moment in the Desert?
Gaurav replied to Mike M.'s topic in Off-Road Club's Discussions
Great topic, @Mike M. – definitely one to laugh and learn from! I still remember my near flip in Liwa a few years ago — all thanks to a rush of overexcitement. I spotted this massive, tall dune and thought, “Why not attempt a sidey? Even reaching 70% height would be thrilling!” As I started the side slope, the car kept climbing effortlessly. At around 95%, I got greedy and decided to switch it up — let’s try a criss-cross! Big mistake. As soon as I crossed over, both wheels on the driver’s side went airborne. It was that classic “Oh no” moment. But by sheer luck or divine intervention, the car landed back on all four wheels just in time. When I stepped out and looked at my tracks, I saw over 5 meters missing from the driver’s side. I just sat down on the sand for five minutes… letting the adrenaline settle. -
If its a city car, do it on as-is basis simply because its not going to be stressed in sand. Gasket, seal, hoses, brake can be done now. Suspension & diff parts (13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 12, 22) can wait until stronger symptoms appear, which you can feel while driving loud and clear. While at spark plug change, ask mechanic to do the compression test to check the engine actual health. If all cylinder firing above 150-180 psi, it means the rebuild was good. If not, you might have a lot more issues and it's worth considering whether to keep the car or not. Engine rebuild seems normal, but with the quality of workmanship existing here it's always a shady part. Secondly guy selling a rebuilt engine Pajero raises more suspicion, as if all fake parts were used to cut corners and now they started to show their age (esp tappet cover gasket, real crank seal, torque converter seal).
