Dear @Damiru Dharmadasa, @Gilbert Khalil, @Iliyas Bava, @Abdul Hannan, and @hasan hamadeh Welcome to the Carnity team of "desertnauts". From the Greek language, the word "Naut" indicates a sailor, but today is more widely referred to "a person engaged in the navigation of a vehicle". Combining that with "desert", makes you part of the large group of Desertnauts who engage in navigating the desert as a passion. This weekend's drive was one of the best "initiation" drives I have personally attended. Great display of self-control, and a perfect job at applying the newly learned skills of managing dune's crossing and riding. A few useful learning moments allowed Damiru to find out the difference between speed and momentum, Iliyas to set his Wrangler's electronics, and Abdul to find his balance and composure on the side of the slopes. We managed to push the itinerary further than intended, also thanks to @MUHAMMAD Kashif RAZZAQ's support from the Sweep's position, and drove with minimum issues as far as we could. By the end of the day, from Bab al Shams to Solar Park via the northern reaches of Qudra, we covered 61.1 Km, in 3:39 hours (of which 2:30 moving), at a fast average moving speed of 24 Km/h (17 Km/h total). With this recap, you are all welcomed to join any future Newbie, and enjoy the thrill of desert off-roading. Have a great week ahead.

Dear @Damiru Dharmadasa, @Gilbert Khalil, @Abdul Hannan, @Iliyas Bava, @hasan hamadeh, and @MUHAMMAD Kashif RAZZAQ, it's time to receive more information about tomorrow's Absolute Newbie drive. First of all, thanks for sending me the info regarding your past experiences, and available equipment. I will check the tow points when you reach the meeting point, just to make sure they are in good conditions. Those who have flags, please mount them, while I will assist you with deflating. Please, remember to come with a full tank. Regarding the meeting point, I have chosen a spot which is a bit out of the way from the tarmac road, as in the proximity of the turn-off there are a lot of road works, and we may not have enough space. As advised, please follow the Google Map directions. Once you turn off the tarmac (after circling 360 degrees around a roundabout) you will pass through an opening in the roadworks, and head toward an opening in the fence you'll see in front of you. @MUHAMMAD Kashif RAZZAQ, the other Senior in the convoy (with a yellow Wrangler), will be waiting there, to point you in the right direction. Please take that gravel road into the area, and drive for less than 3 Km before finding the meeting point. I will be already parked there: stop in a line on the side of the track, and wait to receive further instructions. Those of you with radios, please tune into Carnity Channel #1 (446.006). It would be best if you manage to have this frequency pre-programmed, or activate the dial-in function of your radio, so you may manually tune into it. After deflating I will announce the order in which each car will be driving in the convoy. Everything else you'll have to know we'll discuss and introduce you to, just before and during the drive. Looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow morning at 5:00AM sharp. Have a nice end of the week.

Al Aweer to Mahafiz (and on to Nazwa): Ridge Riding Feast - Drive Report "You are not meant for crawling. So don't. You have wings. Learn to use them and drive." - Rumi One of the most difficult things to get used to in desert off-roading is climbing the side slope of a dune, reaching the ridge, managing to get 2 wheels on the other side of the ridge, and... drive on it (before, eventually descending on either side). That moment, between when the sky is almost all you see and the car settles on the ridge, is almost like learning to fly. Daring to leave your comfort zone, and willingly launch yourself on a path which requires trials and errors, persistence and patience, and eventually will make you, literally, fly on top of the dunes. As true flight, there are many ways to fly on a dune's ridge. Like flying, sometimes it requires the power of one's wings (read engine), and others just to tweak them in one direction or another, exploiting the momentum that has carried you up, and controlling it. This ridge-riding feast aimed to build in each driver the awareness that riding ridges requires a delicate balance of power and control, that it can be achieved by alternating burst of speed (climbing and occasionally overcoming the drag of the sand underneath the car) with delicate touches of the wheel (to navigate the ridges curves, without losing control or momentum). Whether the drive delivered its promise, only the drivers can tell. I know for sure that we rode as many ridges as we could find, which is pretty much everywhere in this area, except close to the crossing of the tarmac coming from Al Aweer, and just prior to reaching the Mahafiz area, where the dunes become shorter and tighter, requiring more technical, finesse, driving. In all, from the drive's recorded track, I could count 45 ridges ridden, which should surely count as a good number of repetitions of this same exercise. The drive was well managed by all members, without major issues (stucks and refusals are supposed to happen in these kinds of drives, as are part of the learning process). Great Second Lead by@Alain Canivet-Abikhalil, extremely reliable support at the Center by a tireless @Nivin, and perfect, hard worked Sweep by @Darren Brooke. Very good performance by @Anoop Nair (you got more confident as the drive progressed), @Warren Flay (always very reliable), @Tareck (not easy to handle your big car on this terrain), @Hardik Mody, @Richard Franks, @Adhir Saxena and @Chinthaka Ruwan, all completing a very strong drive. We finally extended the itinerary to exit at Nazwa (coming back from the outskirts of Mahafiz, which we reached in very good time), and actually this extension, with mostly criss-crossing exercises rather than ridge-riding, was were fatigue and heat started to create new challenges, and made the drive more eventful. We exited after a total of 4:07 hours, of which a long 3:26 while driving (with really minimal breaks), covering 81.7 Km, at a brisk average moving pace of 24 Km/h. Thanks a lot to everyone for joining, and hope to see you soon. Have a great weekend.

Little Sweihan Blitz - Drive Report "If you finds all roads and paths blocked, He will show you a secret way that no one knows." - Rumi Blitz: from the German word "blitzkrieg", meaning lightning. The drive aimed to embody the meaning of this word. A fast move onto the area of Little Sweihan, south-west of Solar Park, beyond the area I call "the Middle Earth" (a set of tall, long range dunes, very bushy and bumpy) and protected to the west by a tall fence enclosing a military practice zone. We reached it quickly, through a dirt tracks, the outer perimeter of the Middle Earth dunes, and the sand track next to the military fence. Then, across a sabkha, into the first set of dunes, moving along the length of Little Sweihan's triangle, from its base next to the military fence, to its tip, toward the north-east. Once almost at the tip, we turned around, to descend toward the triangle's base, moving toward its center. The goal was to continue this zig-zagging along and across the dunes, up and down the length of the area, to finally reach the southern limit of Little Sweihan's triangular base. There were times when the blitz had to take a much more sedated pace. In particular, toward the middle of the second iteration, when we suddenly started driving in a very tight set of tall dunes, coming from their slip face, which forced the convoy to make a few stops, and following the Poet's advise, to improvise and "be shown a secret way that no one yet knew". The so-called "Little Sweihan" is a very unpredictable area. Enclosed by very tight dunes on both its sides (only the base is open and accessible), once across this first challenge, its core is often changing shape, due probably to the high and constant winds that blow from north to south, redesigning the dunes angles, filling bowls with soft sand, and sharpening the ridges. Therefore, there are times when it's possible to easily drive its length through an endless string of open bowls, and other times, more often, when the convoy has to struggle through high and sharp criss-crossings, deep bowl descents and climbs, and especially with patiently finding a way around blocked paths, retracing one's steps until an opening appears, and the going gets miraculously easier, again. Hence, the fact that we only had a pop-out (the combination of soft sand, tight turns, and lower deflation is sometimes lethal for heavy cars such as Patrols< so this things happen), and two stucks requiring tugs, was an indication that the convoy behaved greatly on such difficult terrain, made perhaps more unpredictable by the heat of the day (measuring 46 degrees at departure) and soft sand. As the sun started to set, we moved north. across the Middle Earth (leaving the sand track next to the fence for the weak at heart), and ridge-rode our way toward the exit, at Solar Park, with only a minor interruption on a sharp and tall crest, where we executed our last tug of the day, with the sunset at our back. As for the convoy, as mentioned, it rose to the challenge, and behaved like a pack of veterans. Clean and safe Second Lead by @Lakshmi Narasimhan, and a very well executed "tutoring" session by each higher ranked member (@Ashok chaturvedi, @Gok Krish, @GauravSoni and @Shaaz Sha, in the order of driving) leading the more junior drivers (respectively @Humayun Ghias, @Russ, @Darren Brooke and @Ranjan Das, who also moonlighted as Sweep). The drive ended after 3:22 hours (of which 2:46 while moving, with only 36 minutes of pauses, including all recoveries), covering 71.2 Km, at a pace of 26 Km/h while moving (and 21 Km/h overall). Thanks to all for joining, and hope to see you soon again. Have a great weekend ahead.

Dear Desertnauts. Last minute info about tomorrow's drive. We'll meet a short distance after the Solar Park "glass pyramid", pointing in a westerly direction, parallel to the bike track, which we'll follow as much as possible, until we reach a sand track that will take us to Little Sweihan. Here we'll explore its length, multiple times, each one moving further south, until we'll reach the sabkha that separates this area from the northern reaches of Abu Dhabi (without ever coming close to the border). There'll be plenty to practice, from finesse driving in tight dunes, to faster pace, roller-coaster bowl riding, and criss-crossing sharp dunes, often ruffled by the string winds that sweeps the area. Our convoy order will be as follows: @Lakshmi Narasimhan in Second Lead @Ashok chaturvedi will follow at #3 @Humayun Ghias at #4 @Russ will be #5 @Darren Brooke at #6 @Ranjan Das will take spot #7, and @Gok Krish will Sweep. No Center Forward, as each driver will take care of the cars in front and behind, with my assistance. We'll pick the Carnity Channel at the meeting point. Come ready to drive, as punctual as possible, so we may depart as close to 4:00PM as possible. See you tomorrow.

Lisaili to Sunset - Drive Report "Let the beauty of what you love be what you do" - Rumi When a bunch of guys from all walks of life show up in the middle of a torrid afternoon, and start toiling around their cars, getting them ready for the task ahead, each person burning not only from the scorching sun, but mostly with the desire to set off on the sandy track, clearly they are letting the beauty of what they love become what they do. The love for the desert is reflected in the enthusiasm with which every person throws away his everyday lifestyle, to simply become a passionate off-roader, each unique with his own combination of car and driving style, yet united within the convoy by the thrill of a fast paced desert drive. Truly, his drive turned out much more exciting that I had made it out to be. What was meant to be a loosely defined itinerary across Lisaili, toward Solar Park and Qudra, actually became an exploration drive entirely dedicated to Lisaili, diverging from previous tracks in 3 different areas, to explore the width, more then the length, of this plateau. After the usual approach along the pylon track, we went into the long range dunes, first heading toward Margham, to reach an area of sabkhas, alternated with low, very long dunes. From here we returned toward the center of Lisaili's plateau, remaining on top of its tall dunes, staying away from the strings of farms close to the pylon road (which function, usually, as middle points between the start and Solar Park): this middle section of Lisaili offers a beautifully landscaped technical area, centered around a large number of Ghaf trees, constituting almost a desert garden. Finally, after a short drive toward the pylon track limiting Lisaili's northern edge, the convoy re-routed to the west, looking (and finding) a set of tall dune canyons and sand bowls, with the sun starting to set below their high crests. Three magnificent detours, that gave all of us the opportunity to see another face of Lisaili. A truly enjoyable ride, with stretches driven at fast speed (up to 33 Km/h), mixed with a slower pace over the central technical area, for an overall brisk 25 Km/h moving average speed, needed to cover 72.3 Km, in 2:52 hours of driving time. Great support by @Kalahari, finally returning to the sand with gusto, @Islam Soliman giving security to the convoy at CF, and @Shaaz Sha, sweeping it to safety. Cool driving by @M.Seidam, @Gok Krish, @Thomas Varghese, @Rob H amd @Ahab Shamaa. Virtually no refusals, only 1 stuck and 1 pop-out, in the final stretch, speak loudly for the ability of the whole convoy to move in unison, with almost perfect coordination. Thanks to all for joining to make this a very fun and enjoyable drive. See you soon out there.

Dear soon to be Desertnauts. Welcome to Carnity! As you are aware of, this is a drive strictly for who has never been off road with Carnity. In preparation for it, it is important that you inform us if: you have any prior off-road experience; your vehicle has front and rear tow hooks / eyelets. Before joining the drive on Friday morning, you will need to have viewed the introductory videos (links above). Please also make sure you are equipped with a tire deflator and a tire pressure gauge (sometimes they are all in one tool). You will need these. If you have an off-road flag as well that would he great. In case you do not have a flag mount on your car, you may look for a flag with suction cups, which can be easily placed on one of the rear windows. Even if the drive should end near a gas station, where they have an air compressor, if you have your own please bring it along, as it may be quicker than waiting in line. So, to recap, useful tools to carry would be: tire deflator (must) tire pressure gauge (must) off-road flag air compressor All these items should be available at any ACE or Speedex store, as well as at Dragon Mart. Regarding the area of the drive, we will access the desert from a less used entry point, along the road going from Qudra Parking (where you can use the ADNOC gas station to fill up your tank), toward the Bab al Shams Resort. Follow carefully the Google Maps directions: once you turn off the tarmac road (after circling a roundabout next to a mosque), you will cross through roadworks being done along the bike track. Still following Google Maps' directions, you will go through an open fence, on a dirt track, for a few kilometers, until you'll reach the meeting and deflation point. I will also ask the other Senior member driving with the group ( @Chaitanya D ) to wait at the turn-off from the tarmac, just next to the bike track, and direct you in the proper direction. Once arrived at the meeting point, we'll conduct a final inspection of your cars (sufficient clearance and accessible tow points are a must, without which you'll be turned back). Following a detailed technical briefing, we'll be ready to enter the dunes, and start your off-roading adventure. This area is rarely used by other clubs, and the sand is much cleaner ad smoother, so this is an ideal ground to move your first steps in the desert. Any new member who's planning to join this introductory drive, please contact me on this thread for any preparatory question. In the meantime have a great week.

Dear @Tero Vallas. I wish you all the best for your new posting and endeavors. Surely all of us at the Club will miss your gentlemanly company. I am glad that, in any case, you will continue with your acrobatics, not on sand but in the air. Now you can return to fighting gravity 😅. Best of luck.

Dear Desertnauts. Here's the last update about tomorrow's AM drive: our objective will be to complete the crossing of these 2 areas - Al Aweer to Lahbab, and Lahbab to Mahafiz the major skill we will practice in these areas will be ridge-riding, in a very controlled situation (not quite in a straight line, but rather steering along curvy ridges) the second objective, if time will allow, will be to extend the drive to Nazwa's outskirts, through a mix of long range dunes and technical areas, and a mix of criss-crossing and finesse driving. The convoy numbering will be the following: @Alain Canivet-Abikhalil in Second Lead @Anoop Nair at #3 @Warren Flay at #4 @Tareck will be #5 @Nivin will cover Center Forward @Hardik Mody is going to drive at #7 @Richard Franks at #8 @Adhir Saxena at #9 @Chinthaka Ruwan will wear #10 @Yusuf Esaf is going to be #11, and @Darren Brooke will Sweep the concoy. Please reach the meeting point, just at the outskirts of Al Aweer, in time, and start deflating, taking into account the need to face soft sand, and increasing temoeratures, as the drive progresses. In reaching the meeting point, pay attention to road works, and a detour to reach Al Aweer coming from Dubai, which is taking place on E611. The road works may cause delays in reaching the location. Once on location, please tune into Carnity Channel #2 (446.031). Looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow. Have a great evening.
