Post Drive Report @Gregory @Yawa @Roda Kum @Shereen Shaaban @samamara @Mohamed Madani @LACOURIE @Rjducos @Batuhan Kulac @Alexander Alcala @Wrangeld A slightly frustrating drive because without the recoveries in the soft sand, this was a well driven drive by all. With the benefit of a few experienced drivers in the convoy, it sort of left it to the 'a little too low' Range Rover of Mohamed and the 'technically challenged Land Rover of Roda to provide all the entertainment. @Gregory - great 2nd drive, putting everything we learned into practice. Hope you can get back soon. @Yawa - all that time in the passenger seat paid dividends. @samamara - well done. I am still reliving some of the screams I heard. Please sort out access to the tow points. @Roda Kum - you need more time out in the desert and on line to find out how to set up your car so that it does not stop you having fun. @Shereen Shaaban - lesson learned. We put the advice there for a reason. @Mohamed Madani - Considering the clearance you did well, but there are a lot of compromises when the car is so low to the ground. Hope you were able to refix the scuttle plates. @LACOURIE - well done on the promotion. Looking forward to seeing you on more drives. @Rjducos - years of experience show through. the control of the vehicle was a pleasure to see and I hope you come backto show us more. @Batuhan Kulac - I wait to hear that G63 purr it's way around the dunes again. Great drive. You'll find high profile tires make progression much easier in Fewbie. @Alexander Alcala - wow! What an incredible amount of experience to have on the drive supporting the members. Truly a privilege. Looking forward to seeing more. @Jeepie - brilliant, calm, collected safe and secure as ever. Thanks everyone. See you soon in the sand.

Dear Absolute Newbies Prior to every drive at Carnity we like to publish a convoy list with the order of our convoy so that everyone knows where they will be driving tomorrow. It helps to know your convoy number in advance because we do want everyone to know in front of and behind whom you are driving. More will be explained in the briefing before the drive. Morning Absolute Newbie Faqa 26th March 2021 Attendees Level Car Radio Pos # Wrangeld Marshal Mitsubishi Pajero SWB Y 1 Gregory @Gregory Absolute Newbie Mitsubishi Pajero LWB Y 2 Yawa @Yawa Absolute Newbie Jeep Wrangler SWB Y 3 Roda Kum @Roda Kum Absolute Newbie Land Rover Discovery Y 4 Shereen Shaaban @Shereen Shaaban Absolute Newbie Jeep Wrangler Nighteagle Y 5 Alexander Alcala @Alexander Alcala Advance Jeep Wrangler Y 6 Samamara @samamara Absolute Newbie Mitsubishi Pajero LWB Y 7 Mohamed Madani @Mohamed Madani Absolute Newbie Land Rover Range Rover Y 8 Lacourie @LACOURIE Absolute Newbie Jeep Wrangler LWB Y 9 rjducos @Rjducos Absolute Newbie Ford 150 Lariat Y 10 Batuhan Kulac @Batuhan Kulac Absolute Newbie Mercedes G63 Y 12 Jeepie @Jeepie Expert Jeep Wrangler Y 13 Don't worry about the Y for radio - that's an internal admin issue for me. Yawa, that's fantastic. I started my 4x4 career sharing the car with my wife as well, so I have seen the passenger seat - and believe me, it's a brilliant learning experience. You will find that once you are in the driving seat, all that you learned as co-pilot will be invaluable. I think I had the pleasure of you both on one of my drives (Lisali) so I know that your radio skills are already well practiced. Looking forward to seeing you on Friday.

@Shereen Shaaban great to see you have signed up for our Absolute Newbie drive. As with everyone else, can you please tell us: Vehicle: Modified in any way Experience: what have you done before if anything How does success look?: What do you want achieve from your experience in the sand. See you soon in the sand.

@Rjducos thanks for signing up for your first Carnity drive. Looking forward to meeting you on Friday morning. So we get a better understanding of your expertise can you please let us know the following: Vehicle - I see you have a F150 Lariat; Does the vehicle have any modifications? On the Lariat, there are some quite low air dams fitted sometimes at the front that can impact the clearance of the vehicle on the dunes. If you are in any wat concerned about these its a good idea to remove them before venturing out. Experience: You say you have been out a few times before, great. Can you give a few more details? Were these desert drives or picnics or overlanding? How does success look to you? We all come to the desert for our own reasons. It would be good to know what it is that you want out of your off road experience and in particular why you signed up to join the club. As you'll see, we love to empower people to take their own (unmodified) vehicles off road for what ever reason - but it's good to know what you see as the 'end game' here is anything. I am looking forward to seeing you Friday morning. There's a great group of different experience levels coming on the drive, so it should be fun. See you soon in the sand. There could be no better introduction to the sand than through @Mehmet Volga (although I will need to get him to explain how I never yet got that BBQ invitation - must be in my spam!). Radio - not needed on the first drive. I have spare (sanitized) radios that we will loan to the convoy so you don't need to get one until you know that off road is for you. See you soon in the sand (for that BBQ you promised me )

@Batuhan Kulac Thanks for signing up for the Absolute Newbie drive. I understand from the conversations on the site that you have a lot of experience off road already - and it looks like you drive a G63. Please come ready with flag and (due to your experience) preprogrammed radio. We can have a chat face to face about the self certification process. Thanks for your understanding over the Carnity rules as far as all new drivers are concerned. See you Friday. @Mohamed Madani thanks for signing up for the drive on Friday. I see you are driving a Range Rover. Please let me know if this has low or high profile tires and/or additional air dams that might cause problems for clearance in the in sand. All spoilers and dams are at risk of damage in the sand if the clearance is too low (low profile tires will be a cause of this for instance). Otherwise, looking forward to your joining the drive on Friday. We have a nice group already and it should be a fun morning.

@LACOURIE & @Yawa great that you signed up for the Absolute Newbie at Al Qudra on Friday. It would be really great if you can tell us a little about yourself so we know what sort of experience you have in off roading - if any. Can you please share the following information: Vehicle (and if modified in any way). Experience off road (if any) What it is that you want to be able to do with your off road car (e.g. climb moreeb, go on family picnics, a bit if fun and excitement) It is important before you arrive that you check your car has the right ground clearance and has good and accessible tow hooks at the front and the rear of the car. If the tow points are not accessible, we may not be able to let you drive. Also, some cars are fitted with air dams/spoilers that massively reduce the entry angles for cars in the sand. You might want to think about removing these in advance to avoid the possibility of damage. Any questions, please feel free to post them here.
-
@Batuhan Kulac as both @Emmanuel and @Foxtrot Oscar have given feedback, no matter your prior experience off-road, we require all drivers to complete an Absolute Newbie drive before they can self certify to a higher level and we will happily welcome you to all drives at the level to which you are certified. As I am leading the AN this Friday, I will be more than happy for you to join the drive and introduce you to the Carnity Club. I am sure you will understand that this is a safety precaution we take for the benefit of all members.

Wow - thanks so much for all that information. Amazing @samamara. Really looking forward to meeting you. The car sounds perfect. I drive a Pajero as well. It's more or less unmodified. Pajeros have tow kooks as standard. I will explain when we meet the potential pain points in the Pajero long term. You have some amazing experience on which we can build so that you can get deeper into the desert and take your photography hobby to a completely different level - or join some of the other avid photography enthusiasts in the club. The equipment is perfect for the first drive. What you are missing at the moment is an off road flag and a radio - neither of these is needed for Absolute Newbie, but it needed for any drive after that. Please make sure you view the video tutorial before the drive. It will help you understand a lot of what is going to be shown to you on Friday

Sreejith, Thanks for posting this. It's really great to see and I love the crested recovery going on in the background. We've had some learning on this over the months, and as we had no-one on the convoy with a winch, this was the option. The only addition I think worth mentioning was that in addition to the three ropes, to make sure that the pull was successfully executed, I added a bridle on my car with a 20 tonne snatch rope and asked @Baskaran P.R to maintain tension on the rope once moving so that we could clear the whole of the soft patch and avoid catching any of the ropes in his axle. As so often happens when the tires are under a lot of tension while trying to exit a soft patch like this, the pop-out we had to fix on the car once free was unfotunate as it took more time.

Post Drive Report After collecting our strays from cancelled drives and starting off at the wrong point, we got under way and briefed while moving in the hope of getting to cover as much ground as possible. Things were going well until @Lawrence_Chehimi had a popout that took longer to resolve than might have been ideal. On the other hand, it was a chance to show how to deal with even a challenging situation where jacking the car did not work as planned. And that was the feature of today. A few very understandable refusals and a small number of quite time consuming recoveries which meant we did not get to play as much as I wanted but we did have an excellent drive through fantastic scenery and in the end covered more than 65km in some of the softest sand we have faced for some time. Here's some specific feedback that you may find useful. @Sreejith Sreenivasan Thanks for acting as 2nd lead. I was a little shocked that the SWB 3.8 does not have a diff lock which does make it a little more challenging to recover. You need to be a little more patient in self recovery and use a little less gas when you blip blip and than make sure to take advantage of the momentum once it starts. @Baskaran P.R bigger Pajero, bigger problems? Not really. You are in control of the car, no question - until you're not. In the self recoveries you should take a little more time before you start to act, think, and relax. The problems get more difficult to solve if you force the problem. @Antony Calvin I like the way that you drive the Prado. Good control of the power and no problems in trying again if you refuse on challenge. I think that sometimes you are still, however, a bit tenative with the power, when you don't need to be. @Nizam Deen I think that you enjoy the responsibility of helping out your fellow drivers - a great indicator of the greater levels of experience that you have. You have the basics nailed. Now you need to spend more time looking at the recovery situation to see if a different approach can help, as it's not always going to be possible to use the obvious solutions. @Arun Mathew great and faultless drive. You're ready for bigger challenges in drives. @William Fernandes This was a good drive for you, because you needed to self recover quite a lot. That might seem contrary to waht you want to hear, but the more self recovery you do at this level, the more it will help as you progress. Better to make mistakes here, than on more extreme drives. @imranaasghar81 it's such a pleasure to have you on a drive. Your enthusiasm, contribution and skill are there for all to see.As is the progress you're making each drive. As I was not behind you I cannot say if improvements are needed. It looks to me like you have the Fj under control. @Lawrence_Chehimi It's a big beast to handle your Y62 so don't be surprised when it bites back from time to tme. You know why the pop out occurred, you can prevent that happening again by not fighting gravity. The thing is that the weight of the car makes any mistakes you make like this more pronounced. @Hasan Wahlan fantastic you made it to our drive and a pleasure to have you with us. Not sure if it was the soft sand, but it did seem on some occasins that the power delivery in the car is lower than expected which means you need to try to make you way through obstacles with a re try. Nothing wrong with that, in fact I encourage people to retry rather than force. I would just like to know if this is the car or you sometimes don't take the right lines. @Hennie Schoeman great sweeping. In control throughout and really goog guidance given to the drivers when in trouble. Thank you. See you soon in the sand.
