Wrangeld replied to Gaurav's topic in Off-Road Club's Announcements
@Brette I've said it before, and I'll say it here now. I am astonished is taken so long for this to happen because you've been marshal material for s long, long time. You are my Zen master and example of assured careful leadership. So glad to be able to congratulate you buddy. -
@Alexander Alcala Nabil Bishara @Nabil Bishara Kailas @Kailas Islam Soliman @Islam Soliman Nizam Deen @Nizam Deen Jorge Stepniak Felippe @Jorge Stepniak Felippe Kalahari @Kalahari Rizwanm2 @Rizwanm2 Tariq Carrimjee @Tariq Carrimjee Abu Muhammad @Abu Muhammad Shaaz Sha @Shaaz Sha Increasingly looks like this is the full list for the drive Friday morning. If anyone else is planning to drop out please let me know. There are drives where people are on wiat lists so we would like to be fair. How will this drive differ from others? You're all intermediate drivers. As a result, there is an expectation that you can self recover and if you can't recover and are stuck, that you know what is needed to get moving again. We will be using a buddy system during the drive - each person will make sure that the person in front and behind them is OK and help them out if they are in trouble. While I will likely come back to look and check on your progress, I will be relying on you to get yourselves out of trouble [I will step in if it looks dangerous or you really cannot find the solution] because self revovery is as key an element of being an intermediate driver as being able to get from one dune to the next. BIG change in practice, however. During covid times we used ropes as the key area for recoveries because we wanted to be sure of social distancing and protecting ourselves from the virus. Not that its gone away, but with the rules relaxed, we are going back to getting ourselves out of trouble the traditional way, with shovelling. My advice: make sure you have a good shovel with you, because in most cases, you'll be expected to dig yourself out. Teaspoon owners beware. What is the terrain like? There is a lot of vegetation around in parts of this quadrant, which implies it's not clean wonderful dunes the whole way through. The height of this area is not the attraction, so we will unlikely be scaling massive dunes, but there are long range passes and exciting cross overs that make for an exciting ride for everyone. At the same time, I will keep my promise that we will venture into some treacherous technical dunes, soft sand and areas where your intermediate driving skills will be tested by ther finesse and control of the car. You'll need to pick your lines quite carefully. Enough for now. See you soon in the sand. Hi buddy, I know you love the technical and it's a shame you cannot join - but family first, always. As ever, your poetic descriptions encapsulate with perfection the image that I would like everyone to have in their minds about what to expect. Enjoy your rough and tough Saturday drive. See you soon in the sand.

Nabil Bishara @Nabil Bishara Kailas @Kailas Yousef Alimadadi @Yousef Alimadadi Nizam Deen @Nizam Deen Jorge Stepniak Felippe @Jorge Stepniak Felippe Kalahari @Kalahari Rizwanm2 @Rizwanm2 Tariq Carrimjee @Tariq Carrimjee Abu Muhammad @Abu Muhammad Shaaz Sha @Shaaz Sha What to Expect? Intermediate drives are not just about travelling as many kilometers as possible and going as fast as you can through the dunes. They are also about being able to cope with highly technical small tightly packed dunes and to cope with the unexpected. There is a large area in the Lehbab, Margham, Murquab Lisali quadrant with multiple types fo dunes and challenges. The intention is to cover as many of these as possible entering in Lehbab and exiting in Lisali. If we cover all this has to offer, we can then decide if we continue and take on additional challanges. Having said all that, this is not an area that is as familiar as Qudra, Fossil Rock or Pink Rock, so it adds to the excitement and challenge because a lot of what we will do will be an exploration and discovery of the area. . Just don't expect that we will be hammering through all the dunes at top speed so we can cover the highest number of kilometers, but we will be along and at the top of the dunes, and negotiating our way through soft. soft sand that is very unforgiving. See you soon in the snad.

@Mehmet Volga I am with the ithrrr guys. Getting up Faya is not all its cracked up to be. Right day, right sand, right line you'll make it. 30 minutes later, forget it. If climbing big bowls is your thing think about your angle of attack and your momentum. 'Underpowered' cars in the right hands can surprise by having more than enough. My swb 3.8 is wonderful for most climbs ... but i will happily give up getting to the top of a hill if it does not feel right. The sand is fickle.

Veedooshee has been promoted to Intermediate level
Wrangeld replied to Gaurav's topic in Off-Road Club's Announcements
@Veedooshee, I am delighted you have been promoted. In m view there was zero doubt that you are ready and capable and an incredible asset to this club. This is fantastic news that we can all celebrate. -
I ams still processing the drive yesterday a little, because when I think about the terrain passed and the route we took, I am really impressed at the capabilities of this Fewbie group. As a lead, I was looking for a nice but challenging route and wanted to take advantage of being able to stretch my legs a bit because I have been leading quite a lot of Newbie drives lately. You did not let me down, in fact, quite the opposite. Most people know that I want the drives to be a good learning experience for everyone - there's no point going out and doing the same old same old each time. What did we do? I wanted to start the drive in the nice play bowls in Margham. These let us sweep and swoop and side slip. They are getting more popular now it's the summer, but they are still relatively cross track free. We then went down from the high dunes towards the more technical sections of dunes in the direction of Lisali and MUrquab. These dunes are a continuation of the band of technical dunes that flow all the way to solar park, but a little less compact here so navigating through, while a challenge alows us to move through the reddish sand without too many stops. From there we swang bast the (Shhhhh) Palace and eventually back into the high dunes that surround Lisali (but which suffer from a lot of rubbish, tracks and the fact that the pylons make the sand a little unpredictable. Within that 40km route we were treated to a pop out - hope that people who had not seen it before helpful and, thansk to my very well planned stuck (hahaha) and Salar, use of sand track or boards. There has been a reluctance to use sand boards in the club until the last weeks, where they are starting to gain some momentum as a recovery tool. Havign never used them before and having driven out of the pocket in which the car was sitting, for one, I want to investigate more and start to try them out and learn more about the techniques. I was also pleased to finish the drive in daylight. I for one, quite enjoy that I can find my valves and reinflate while it is still light enough to see and know i have the whole evening in front of me. To my Pajero management team: @Ashok chaturvedi @Veedooshee and @Anvar Sadath Bekal you were immense. As I explained to you, but perhaps not to the rest of the convoy, yesterday was unique for me because it was the first time I have led a convoy drive without support from one of the seniors. To the Jeep guys @Archibald Jurdi @Goutam @Vijaysekhar your proved why the Jeep is so loved. @topgear almost never do we only have one FJ on a convoy these days. I think that your learnign on self recovery from the day was good for the future. @Salarios great to see you. You are still MR Powwwwer. And the sand board were a great idea. @Mikhail Lukichev great drive. You really have your beast well under control. Impressive. @Anand Nataraj seems that there were a few moments when the legendary X needed nudging to get up and over, but as ever, you sorted it all out. Looking forward to the next time out. See you soon in the sand.

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all thro’ the house, Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The car key were hung by the front door with care, In hopes that the morning would soon would be there; The drivers were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sand and dunes danc’d in their heads, And Mama in her ‘hijab, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a short night’s nap- When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters, and threw up the sash. The moon on the sight of what could not be snow, Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below; When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a minature jeep, and and a Ford 150 Ranger, With a lovely pretty driver, so lively and wan, I knew in a moment it must be Marjan. More rapid than eagles more drivers they came, Wrangeld, Osvaldo, Camel DXB and Dodi was his name: They sprung to their cars, no fears of stucks in their ears, Drving incredibly, like they had all done it for years Then I heard them exclaim, before they drove out of sight- Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night. What an Xmas present from @Osvaldo Porto @Dodi Syahdar and @camel dxb with, as ever, incredible suppport from @Jeepie. I am going to admit, I took advvantage of you all today and we drove longer and possibly a harder route than I would have normally on an Absolute Newbie drive: but you guys were amazing. A short convoy sometimes works in our favour and that was how it worked out today. Even tough it was the frist drive, all of the new drivers learned what to do and how to control the cars so quickly that I felt no worry about making the drive more tecnical and going to areas where normally you would not take a newbie drive - because I really wanted to find some routes not churned up by all the traffic in the desert at the moment. We started our adventure by working our way to the long range dunes that you reach normally from the Lisali direction. This was more challenging because we were effectively going backwards and negotiating a little against the slip face, but everyone maanged that. From there we made our way all the way from the wonderful vantage point we found high in the dunes (where we could see "the Chimney" and the "Witches Hat") to Solar Park and the Wondeful Harry Potter Tribute - perhaps it's not officially known as that, but I am sticking to my story. At Solar Park we turned West in the direction of Bab Al Shams and drove West to avoid the consrtuction works taking place on the pylon line and then turned back North toward Last Exit and the Hamari Well. It's sometimes asked how we navigate on these drives. Do we have a map ready with the route? Are the drives al planned in advance so you know where you are going. Today, the answer for sure was, no. It was all going to depend on the ability of the of the drivers, my capability to lead a route that could be driven and @Jeepies ability to coach and help any driver that found themselves in a bit of trouble. Of course we had a few refusals along the way and the shovels came out, but nothing serious that we could not quickly handle and nothing that took away any of the massive pleasure that we had on our drive today. Thanks to all of you. Have a wonderful rest of the day and I look forward to seeing you soon in the sand.
