What is V belt

What my mechanic says that the V belt has to be changed but i have no clue what is V belt and why it should be changed. Is there a way yo check if he is saying the truth?

If your car is making a whining noise, if it has cracks or is shiny with oil then it should be changed as it will increase the chances of braking which can be very hazardous.

timing belt life is upto 5 yrs but you need to keep an eye on it

How to keep eye on timing belt, its half km inside in the engine mate.....!

Timing belt is supposed to be changed every 80k km - 100k kms irrespective of number of years.

if there is a an unexplainable noise form the engine of the car that sounds as if a part of the something is broken ask a good mechanic to look at the timing belt. he will bend the belt and see if its cracky if not then its still good.
