What does a coolant do?

I don't have much information about the car or its engine. Just wanted to know the attributes of a coolant in a car. For what is coolant required in a car?

Coolant is a liquid in the engine that helps to control the temperature inside the engine. Because of the regular processing in the engine and summer weather, the engine tends to become hot. And at that time, the coolant helps in decreasing the temperature. Without coolant, no car can go on a long run.
