its a good start if you check the engine using a tester if there is a problem with the engine. -
the BMW guys use their Own Brand Of Filters so what i think you should do is go the them and get the original air filter for replacing the old one. At times where the are crucial parts of the car that needs to be replaced i always go for original parts as it saves a lot of money in long run.
