  1. When you apply foot pressure to the clutch of your vehicle, the clutch master cylinder converts that pressure to hydraulic pressure. This hydraulic pressure is then conveyed to one or several slave cylinders, which enable you to shift gears in the transmission. When the clutch master cylinder malfunctions, you can no longer shift gears. Accessing the clutch master cylinder is somewhat challenging, since it is located directly behind the clutch pedal. Nonetheless, the replacement procedure is something you can perform yourself, which will save 1.Disconnect the negative battery cable using a ratchet and socket, and locate the master cylinder reservoir hose near the bottom of the engine on the firewall, directly opposite of the clutch pedal. 2. Fasten vice grips to the part of the hose that is connected to the master cylinder, then remove the hose from the master cylinder using a flathead screwdriver. The vice grips will prevent fluid leaks. 3.Set a drain pan beneath the master cylinder, then unfasten the hydraulic hose from the master cylinder using an adjustable wench. 4. Climb into the cab and remove the lower dash panel using a Phillips screwdriver, then unplug the diagnostic connector by hand. The diagnostic connector is locate behind the lower dash, below the steering wheel. It is a black cord with ends similar to USB cords. One end of the cord usually has to two thumb-screws that need to be unscrewed by hand to unplug the cord. 5.Access the master cylinder's piston rod through the lower dash. Notice the rod that extends from the master cylinder on the other side of the firewall to the clutch pedal bracket. Pull out the clip that fastens the rod to the clutch pedal bracket using needle nose pliers, and remove the rod from the clutch pedal bracket. 6.Unbolt the two nuts that connect the clutch master cylinder using a ratchet and socket. The two nuts, which are located just on the other side of the firewall, are accessible through the lower dash. Reach through the lower dash and pull the master cylinder out. 7.Insert the new clutch master cylinder into its place. Reattach the two connecting nuts and piston rod. Reconnect the diagnostic connector, and reinstall the lower dash panel. Reconnect the reservoir hose. 8.Fill the clutch master cylinder with brake fluid, while holding the open end of the hydraulic hose in your hand and plugging it with your thumb. Have a friend push down on the clutch pedal, and release your thumb from the end of the hose. As soon as the pedal is fully depressed, plug the end of the hose with your thumb. Continue this process until all the air is expelled from the master cylinder. 9.Reconnect the hydraulic line and battery cable.
