  14. Roping in the X-Generation! Yes, that’s what Toyota had exactly in mind when they introduced the xA into the Middle East a few years ago. The xA was spot-on and caught the fancy of young nationals, becoming one of the most sought after small cars in the market, especially among the women folk. Last year, the xA went in for a slight facelift. The redesign included newly designed speedometer, front and rear bumpers, front grille and headlamps. A single CD player was also included as a standard fitment in the models. The xA fits the mould of what a young adult could wish for, with looks that would deceive the innocent into thinking it is an SUV, with a readiness to take you anywhere you want to go and dad don’t-you-stop-me attitude. Even so, it can break out of the mould to satisfy the discerning adult including the not so young at heart. It has a muscular stance with sculpted wheel arches and tightly connected styling cues running throughout the car’s lines from front to the rear. Inside its precocious missile-like shell, the xA provides passengers the space they need with sufficient head- and leg-room. If you are into an active-lifestyle, the xA lets you fold the rear seats to make room for a whole lot of your sporting gear. The visually appealing interior sports a metal-tone instrument panel trim and matching ventilation controls on the centre console, stylized black-on-while gauges and textured treatments on the doors, dashboard and seats. A 1.5-litre engine delivering 107bhp to the front wheels powers the xA. This powerplant provides the 5-door hatchback with an excellent power-to-weight ratio. Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) ensures an even spread of power for sporty response across the engine speed range. The xA can be had with a 5-speed manual or an automatic super ECT (Electronic Controlled Transmission) 4-speed transmission. Toyota engineers have fitted in a good measure of safety features into the xA. A high, rigid body offers improved aerodynamics. ABS is standard and the much acclaimed GOA body, based on omni-direction compatibility secures passengers in case of an accidental collision. 15. The Aurion is a mid-size sedan based on the Camry but with a more powerful V6 engine than its sibling possesses. It has different front and rear end styling, but underneath is very similar to Toyota’s workhorse sedan. Various upgrades have been given to the Aurion to differentiate itself from the Camry – the theory being that buyers spending the extra money want something a bit different. As well as the engine and exterior design, the interior has a much more premium feel, with plenty of soft touch materials and the option of far more impressive specification. Four versions of the Aurion are available (in the UAE), starting with the Touring grade, which despite being the ‘entry-level’ trim comes well equipped. Included are a six CD changer, Bluetooth phone connectivity, cruise control and a powered sunshade, as well as keyless entry and front fog lamps and 17-inch alloy wheels, as well as a rear spoiler. The mid-range model adds an auxiliary socket to the stereo for MP3 players, and also features side and curtain airbags for increase safety. VSC (electronic stability control) and traction control are added, and a smart key means the car can be unlocked and started without removing the key from your pocket or bag. The top-range model adds a sunroof, with a further top range model adds leather seats and a satellite navigation system, along with parking sensors. The power plant for all models is a 268bhp, 3.5-litre V6 engine, which drives the front wheels through a six-speed automatic gearbox. SOURCE: http://automiddleeast.com/2010-toyota-aurion/
  16. The Avalon is a full-size sedan that continues to sell well in the Middle East, although it has been replaced by the Aurion in other international markets. It sits right at the top of the Toyota sedan ladder in terms of luxury and features and is best referred to as a Lexus in all but badge and price. It’s larger than both Camry and Aurion. Two trim levels are available: XL and Limited. Both are powered by a 3.5-litre V6 engine that produces a meaty 280bhp and is attached to a six-speed automatic gearbox. The XL includes a sound system with a radio, CD player AND cassette player, for all you old school music lovers out there. It also features full electrics (windows, mirrors and driver’s seat) and automatic air conditioning, cruise control. Safety-wise, the XL includes front side, curtain and knee airbags. It rides on 17-inch alloy wheels. The top-spec Limited model adds leather upholstery, sunroof and powered rear sunshade, as well as a leather and wood steering wheel. Extra safety features include VSC (electronic stability control) and traction control. A smart key allows you to unlock and start the car without taking the key out of your pocket. A restyled 2011 Avalon was shown at the Chicago Motor Show in February 2010, but there was no news at the time of going to press as to when it would reach the Middle East. The 2010 Avalon was subject to a safety recall in early 2010 over fears about a sticking accelerator. Check that the necessary work has been carried out before you buy. 17. The Camry is one of the best-selling and most recognisable sedans in the Middle East, not least because of its place on the fleets of numerous taxi companies. It is seen as a smart buy given Toyota’s reputation for quality and its price. The car has been given a facelift for the 2010 model year, feature LED tail lights, new headlights and a tweaked front end. Sadly the more powerful engines that accompanied the unveil of the refreshed look in the US don’t make it to the region. Therefore, power still comes from the 2.4-litre, four-cylinder engine that makes 157bhp through either a five-speed manual transmission or a five-speed automatic, depending on the grade that you buy. Those looking for more power might be interested in the V6-powered Aurion, which is based on the Camry. Speaking of grades, three versions of the Camry are available in the Middle East. The entry-level GL includes a radio cassette player for all you fans of music from the 80s (a CD player is available as an option), as well as power windows, keyless entry and airbags for the driver and front seat passenger. Splash out on the mid-level GLX model and you’ll get a CD player as standard, with MP3 playing capabilities either by CD or through the auxiliary socket. Bluetooth phone connectivity is also include, as are front fog lamps, alloy wheels and cruise control. A six CD changer and sunroof are available as an option. The top-level SE Camry includes special “sport” headlights, as well as front and rear parking sensors and a spoiler. SOURCE: http://automiddleeast.com/2010-toyota-camry/
  18. The Corolla is a stalwart of the Toyota range; a compact sedan now in its tenth generation. This latest version was released in 2006 and offers customers a no-nonsense, value for money proposition to suit various budgets. Designed with practicality and reliability in mind, the Corolla’s features include a boot larger than previous versions, with rear seats that fold in a 60:40 split for extra load lugging. There’s space for drinks bottles in the door pockets front and back, and cup holders in both sections of the cabin too. Looks-wise, there is a new front grille for the 2010 model year. Standard safety features include ABS and electronic brakeforce distribution, which helps keep the car stable under hard braking. Two engines are available in the region. The first is a 1.6-litre motor with 107bhp, available in three versions of the XLi trim level and attached to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The first is the basic XLi, which includes a radio cassette player and air conditioning. The XLi power option adds in electric windows and mirrors, with keyless entry and central locking, as well as rear parking sensors. The XLi Top Range trim features a CD player with MP3 compatibility, as well as a leather steering wheel and a rear spoiler. It is only available with an automatic gearbox. The more powerful engine choice is the 1.8-litre unit, which makes 130bhp attached to a four-speed automatic transmission. Five versions are available, starting with the XLi and XLi Power Option, which have the same features as above. The XLi Top Range adds in a six CD changer and Bluetooth phone connectivity, while the GLi features automatic air conditioning, dual front airbags and cruise control. The top-spec GLi Leather spec adds leather seats and a sunroof. SOURCE: http://automiddleeast.com/2010-toyota-corolla/
  19. How can you forget the Toyota FJ Cruiser once you’ve seen one? This compact SUV boasts some highly funky and retro looks that ensure it stands out on the road of the Middle East. Or rather, it would if there weren’t so many of them. The snappy visuals, combined with a reputation for decent off-road performance, have made the FJ a popular model for Toyota in the region. The FJ is based on the same platform used for the previous generation of Land Cruiser Prado, making it larger than the RAV4 and giving it room to seat five. Three versions of the FJ Cruiser are available (in the UAE), all with the same 4.0-litre V6 engine, which produces a not-too-shabby 270bhp and powers all four wheels through a five-speed automatic gearbox. The entry-level FJ comes equipped with waterproof fabric and PVC-upholstered seats, to reinforce its off-road image. Whether anyone will actually hose down the interior after use is debatable, but it’s nice to know that you could. Also included is a six CD changer, electric windows and dual front airbags as well as cruise control, a chrome grille and VSC (electronic stability control). The top-level FJ adds more chrome details to the exterior and a sportier steering wheel inside. Rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera are also included, while extra safety features include traction control and side curtain airbags. Many owners like to modify their FJ, so for 2010 Toyota launched a special edition model that saves them the effort. The FJ Stealth comes with matte black paint and black alloy wheels, as well as a carbon-fibre effect dash, extra headlights and roof rack. Darth Vader on wheels, anyone? 21. Toyota’s entry-level SUV was designed in Thailand with emerging markets such as Asia, Latin America and Africa in mind, as well as the Middle East. It’s a mid-size affair that provides an opportunity to budget-conscious buyers to get on the SUV ladder. Based on the Hilux pick-up truck, it’s designed to be tough and have off-road capability, while still able to carry seven in comfort on the road. It’s not the most advanced in terms of technology, but it is affordable when compared to the rest of the Toyota SUV range. Two engines are available in the UAE. The entry-level four-cylinder, 2.4-litre unit makes 158bhp and is available in two versions. The entry level SR is available either in rear wheel or four-wheel drive and with a five speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox. The equipment list in the SR includes a radio cassette player, dual-zone air conditioning and front airbags for both driver and front seat passenger. Electric windows and mirrors are also included, and a rear spoiler adorns the back of the car. The SR Top Spec model adds a CD player and ABS, as well as a keyless entry system and front fog lamps. It rides on 17-inch alloy wheels and is only available with a four-speed automatic gearbox. The top-level choice for the Fortuner comes with a larger 4.0-litre V6 engine that produces 235bhp and comes with either manual or automatic gearboxes. Just one trim level is available, and features include Bluetooth phone connectivity and dual zone air conditioning. The steering wheel and gear knob are wrapped in leather, and leather seats are available as an option. Cruise control is also included. SOURCE: http://automiddleeast.com/2010-toyota-fortuner/
  22. If ever there were a stereotypical vehicle for the Middle East, the Land Cruiser would be it. Toyota’s full-size SUV is hugely popular across the region thanks to its reliability and off-road prowess, as well as people-carrying abilities and comfort. Two engine choices and a range of trims are available, ensuring a Land Cruiser to suit most budgets. The entry-level range of Land Cruisers is powered by a 4.0-litre V6 engine producing 240bhp. The Standard model comes with either a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission and seats nine thanks to its fold down rear seats. Features include a radio cassette player, automatic air conditioning, electric windows and a push-button start. Safety features include ABS, electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, which automatically applies the maximum braking force in an emergency. Dual front airbags are also included. The stripped-down GX model comes with 17-inch alloy wheels and seats eight, with manual windows and not much else. In contrast the GXR model comes with a six CD changer, cool box and a gold grille, as well as front and rear parking sensors and 17-inch alloys. Various GXR models are also available with a wide range of features such as a limited slip differential, curtain side airbags, cruise control and a sunroof. The more powerful Land Cruiser houses a 4.7-litre V8 engine, with 271bhp and a five-speed automatic gearbox. Its range starts with the feature-packed GXR, which comes with or without a safety package that features side and curtain airbags, as well as a locking rear differential. Three versions of the top-spec VXR trim include such features as 18-inch alloys, four-way air conditioning and various off-road technologies such as active traction control and hill assist control. Leather seats and an uprated sound system are also available. SOURCE: http://automiddleeast.com/2010-toyota-land-cruiser/
  23. The RAV4 is part of the handful of compact SUVs that started the trend for the high-riding car back in 1996. Fast-forward 14 years and the RAV4 is now in its third generation; bigger than its predecessors and taking on competition from the likes of Honda’s CR-V and Chevrolet’s Captiva. Don’t expect the RAV4 to be an off-roader in the style of the larger FJ Cruiser or Land Cruiser Prado – there’s four-wheel drive, but it’s designed to stay on the tarmac rather than hit the dunes. Power comes from a four-cylinder, 2.4-litre engine that develops 168bhp. There are three trim levels available. The basic model includes a rudimentary radio and cassette player (does anyone still use cassettes…?), as well as steel wheels, electric windows and ABS, while there are airbags for both driver and front seat passenger. Upgrade to the mid-range model and the equipment list features dual zone air con, a cassette AND CD player (with MP3 player compatibility) and cruise control, as well as front fog lamps and 17-inch alloy wheels. The top-spec model is available in two flavours. The first sees the seats upholstered in fabric, while inside there’s a CD changer and rear parking sensors, as well as Bluetooth phone connectivity. An optional Urban Runner package adds some chrome detailing and a black and silver steering wheel. The second top-spec model adds leather upholstery and an electrically operated front driver’s seat. The seat is heated, although we can’t imagine that’s much of an advantage in the Middle East. Safety features added include curtain side airbags and VSC (electronic stability control). SOURCE: http://automiddleeast.com/2010-toyota-rav4/
  24. The Sequoia is the largest SUV in the Toyota range. In fact, it’s larger than pretty much anything, save perhaps for the Nissan Armada and the Chevrolet Suburban. It’s because of its enormous size that the name is chosen – the Sequoia is one of the largest trees in the world. With three rows of seat, four-wheel drive and a massive boot, it’s built to be both practical and comfortable on the road rather than off it. Four versions of the Sequoia are on sale (in the UAE), each powered by the same 5.7-litre V8 engine, which puts out 381bhp. The engine is attached to a six-speed automatic gearbox driving all four wheels. The entry-level model is the eight-seater SR5. Despite being the most basic Sequoia available, it’s still well specced, with features including automatic air conditioning, radio CD player, cruise control and front and rear parking sensors. Three second row passengers can be accommodated on the second row bench seats. The other eight-seat model is the Limited, which features leather upholstery and power folding of the third row of seats. Satellite navigation is included, as is a DVD player, moon roof, powered tailgate and 20-inch alloy wheels. The seven seat models replace the second row bench with two individual seats divided by a centre console. They also ride on air suspension. The Platinum Premium model features cooled front seats and a six CD changer, while the Platinum Luxury edition adds sat nav, a DVD player and a rear view monitor. Safety equipment on all models includes ABS with electronic brake distribution and brake assist, which applies maximum braking force in an emergency. Front, side and curtain airbags are all included, as are VSC (electronic stability control) and traction control. SOURCE: http://automiddleeast.com/2010-toyota-sequoia/
