I agree, I can't think of a single practical advantage this set-up could possibly have. I'm also thinking that this was a proof-of-concept design that was dropped when the designers realized that the whole thing was more trouble than it was worth.

It came out of a 1980s GMC G series van. Can’t find much information on it but it was produced for less than 2 years.

  2. There are plenty of sandy areas where you can drive without a licence, look out and see. I am in sports city, there is a big sandy area where I drive to and let my wife drive around in my car. She has learned how to drive forwards and backwards, now she is learning to use her mirrors to park. Look around and see. If you have a 4x4 just go to a desert area and have some fun. Pick a big area with nothing to crash into

  3. Tool have just released their first song in 13 years

So awesome. When you hear it you know it’s a tool song. I always imagined if pink Floyd got together 40 years later, this is what they would sound like. Super progressive with a bit of metal thrown in. I can’t wait for the full album to drop.

We actually have another guy who lives on green tea as well.

We can make rocket fuel from green tea no problem. Just add some sugar and yeast. Hack a pressure cooker to build a distillation chamber.

Fun fact - The Nazi V2 rockets ran on homemade alcohol. More people died making the rockets than the rockets actually killed. The people making the rockets used to steal the alcohol to get drunk. It was a 70% pure alcohol mix. More people got drunk and died from alcohol poisoning than the rockets ever killed. Most of the employees got fired for stealing alcohol. This is why the V2 program ended

Fun fact 2 - the nasa engineers who sent the first people to the moon were kidnapped German  engineers

fun fact 3 - the people who developed the atom bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were kidnapped German engineers

  5. Most of the new cars in Europe don’t come with a spare tyre. You get a can of this stuff and a compressor instead, unless you pay extra and spec a spare wheel. Fine if you drive over a nail but totally useless if you have a blowout. Your tyre fitter will also hate you. This stuff takes forever to clean up so you can do a proper repair.

I used to use slime in my motorcycle tyres. It does work. I used to get punctures regularly but the slime did what it was supposed to do, but again, when it comes time for a tyre change, your tyre guy will hate you.

  6. Mix ATF and acetone (nail polish remover) 50/50 and pour it on the threads every day for a week. It will soak into the threads though capillary action and make them easier to remove. But you need to give it time. It’s not an overnight thing. Keep repeating. Doing it on a warm engine will help.

If you’re using a spark plug socket, take the rubber insert out. I don’t know how, I don’t know why, but when you use the insert, there is a higher chance of breaking the plug. An old mechanic told me this years ago and from my experience he was right. Use a regular socket. When it’s loose, use a magnet to lift the plug out.

Screw extractors, also known as Ezee Outs serve a purpose but you have to be careful using them. They are made of extremely hard metal, therefore extremely brittle. They are harder than drill bits so if you break a screw extractor it’s not just a matter of drilling it out.

Are you sure it’s a spark plug problem? Speed is irrelevant. Bad plugs will cause a misfire under load, ie when you are holding the throttle down and trying to accelerate.

If you want to drop by the shop I’ll take a look at it for you, FOC.

  7. Leaving the garage so I need to find a new home for shop cat.

Shes a 6 month old Arabian Mau. Answers to the name of “shop cat”. Super friendly and loves to play, loves pets and cuddles. Loves to sit under the air conditioner, doesn’t like being out in the heat. Semi toilet trained, will only poop and pee in sand, she won’t make a mess on a floor.

I would love to take her home but wife is allergic to cats and I don’t want to leave and abandon shop cat. It’s a tough life for cats in Al Quoz so I’d like to find a good home for her, someone stable who can take care of her.

If you’re interested in adopting the most lovable kitten ever, let me know.

Part and parcel of the gora Bhai package.

Plus you folk have no negotiation skills!

I can negotiate but if someone is going to give me a stupid first price because I’m gora I will just tell them to F off and I won’t deal with them. They don’t deserve my business. I’m not a tourist and I know how much things cost, I know their profit margins.

Case in hand, I was selling some scrap at work past few days. First guy offered me 250, I told him F off. Then he offered 300, I gave him same response. He eventually offered 500 and I told him I would call the police if he didn’t get out of the garage. Ended up selling it all to a nice honest Punjabi guy today for 5,000, his first offer. Any this a hole wanted me to take 10% of that because he thinks I’m stupid gora?

Its racism, pure and simple. At home I am a sheep farmer who likes to play with cars. I’m not a rich man, never have been, probably never will be, but when people think I’m stupid or try to scam me because of the colour of my skin it makes my dung boil.

  9. The gora life is a tough life. You come to Dubai and expect to be handed 100,000 dhs cash as soon as you get off the plane, but in reality all you get is some guy trying to charge you 150 dhs for a set of fake apple earphones in karama 😂

Just to add my 2 cents. I too like @desertdude have grown up in UAE and we used to drink water from the tap. There was an incident quite some time back when I was still a kid, there was an oil leak on the UAE shores. As the water in the taps is purified water from the sea we started drinking bottled water. Recently I did try to drink from the tap and got an upset stomach. I have now invested in a decent RO purifier and have been using water from the tap, after the RO purification which has been great for the past 3 years. this way I avoid plastic bottled water which was the point in the first place to avoid plastic. Only when I am going for off-road drive I buy bottled water as I have been too lazy to invest in a good water carrier which can be reused. But after reading this column I am definitely going to try to invest in a reusable water carrier.

Well done for saving plastic! I don’t know about some people. Even if I buy a packet of cigarettes the shop tries to give them to me in a bag, I say keep the bag save the planet, and they look at me like I am a crazy person.

  11. When I first came here a local guy told me not to drink the tap water because it will banjax your kidneys. To this day I still don’t know what it tastes like and have no intention of finding out either no matter what anyone says. I know my tap water stinks so that’s enough for me to not want to drink it.

I do hear a lot of people saying that showering in the tap water makes your hair fall out. Bollocks. People come to uae and think they miraculously stop aging when they get off the plane. Bitch you’re getting old, your hair falls out when you get old, deal with it, go try rogaine or something.
