Walkie Talkie Essentials and Questions Topic
Frederic replied to Frederic's topic in Off-Road Club's Discussions
Thanks for replying @Michael sammy If your radio is a Motorola MT777 see below info to switch between channel mode and frequency mode: Note: This radio has 2 operating modes called "Frequency" and "Channel". To switch between these modes, keep the ENTER button pressed while switching on the radio. Pressing the VFO/MR button while you're in Frequency mode will bring you to the combined mode, which is basically a screen that shows both the channel and the frequency. You can use either one of these modes during operation.- 67 replies

Walkie Talkie Essentials and Questions Topic

@Michael sammy with regards to your interference issue on Channel 02 (446.03125). I tried last night with my wifey's 2008 3.8 Pajero but did not notice any interference. We can have a look together on next drive, or send me some pics of your radio set to that frequency.- 67 replies

Al Qudra Newbie Desert Drive - 21 Feb 2020
Frederic replied to Srikumar's topic in Off-Road Club's Offroad Drives
Hi @RohanH glad to hear you enjoyed ! You will receive drive notifications via the Whatsapp group, but we communicate strictly only via the forum. Reason is that by using WhatsApp a lot of essential data gets lost and flooded. If you go through our website you’ll find hundreds of advices, topics, and discussion threads from Off-roading itself to the required tools, information on where to buy, etc...- 48 replies

We have recently decided to use the PMR446 Frequency Range. PMR446 is commonly used and is consisting of 8 analogue channels located between 446.000 up until 446.1 Mhz. That gives us about 9 channels that we can use, BUT with most Chinese radios here being from Dragon Mart, i have seen that they have a bandwidth of 25Khz, meaning that you're constantly overlapping between CH1 and CH2. For this reason we have chosen to use: Channel 1: 446.00625 Channel 3: 446.03125 Channel 5: 446.05625 Channel 7: 446.08125 Putting the radio on NARROW setting to reduce bandwidth helps, but after testing 15+ radios of different models i have seen that even on narrow setting they seem to have this overlapping frequency (after all we are not using professional radios with super accurate frequency modulation). We are still testing these available frequencies and look for the safest solution, considering the fact that we are broadcasting now with +35 people on a sunny Friday morning, sometimes in the vicinity of Military Bases. (something you should know).
-
Step 9 was indeed slightly revised lately: *WIDE setting basically means that your radio will broadcast and receive on a very wide band. For Example if Carnity frequency is 462.887 and your radio is set to WIDE, it will broadcast and receive anything between 462.6375 and 4631375 (25 Khz less or more) This is called channel spacing. *NARROW setting only has a channel spacing of 12,5 Khz so it reduces risk of overlapping frequencies and interference. That's why it is better to use Narrow setting.

From going out and finding the right radio model, programming it, and using the functionalities to get it to work properly, this topic will be used to bundle all essential information and can serve as a discussion thread for everything radio-related. The first handy advice is found below: Above advice contains all the basic information to setup your radio. For whatever questions related to the topic radio / walkie talkie please use the "Walkie Talkie Essentials and Questions" thread to post your questions on which model, where to find, etc...

Thanks for mentioning @Michael sammy So far we have experienced some interference issues with 446.05625Mhz (CH3) and decided to not use this frequency for now. Channel 2 however (446.03125) has been trouble-free so far, and have not faced interference issues in Pajero, but we will test further. Could you provide a screenshot of your radio set on this frequency ? Maybe some other option like CT codes or slight programming error is causing this.

Al Qudra Newbie Desert Drive - 21 Feb 2020

Fantastic report that has become our weekly journal we all look forward too. Fully agree on the drive briefing: Coming on time and attending the briefing is something we keep asking everyone and that comes naturally if you respect each other’s time. Considering the fact that you’ll remember maybe 25% of the briefing on your first drive means that you’ll need to attend at least 4 full sized briefings before things slowly start to creep into your mind, let alone using these tactics in action. It’s also disappointing to see that although we have so many MUST READ articles on the forum, but seeing people showing up without having anything read. Ok rant over 😉. Again we had experiences, stories, laughter, Newbies who did great and were enthusiast, and our dose of healthy sun. And that makes it all worthwhile ! PS I heard that Yihaah too when my little blue one flew over the dune 😅- 48 replies
