What is the role of a voltage regulator in a charging system of car?

Basically when the voltage output is at is maximum in the car electric system its not really healthy for a car. So the voltage regulator helps in limits the voltage in order to avoid any electric short circuit.

Thanks for the explanation saadig. Is this part of the car durable? Do we have to check this regulator frequently in order to determine whether it is working or not?
